This may seem like a stupid question, but is a GTX 280 for $130 worth it? My gut says yes but I was going to get a 4890 for a bit more. What do you all think?

do you have a link to it?

what brand is it?
what are clock speeds?
is it brand new?

you sure its not a 260?

yeah, I'm thinking I could always resell it for the same price if I don't like it. Even if it's 2 months down the line...

100% worth it, and if I were closer I would grab it..:)

that's a hard sell unless your looking at folding or some Nvidia bias game. a new 4890 with a warranty can be had for ~35 more, pretty well on par performance wise with the chance of overclocking it well

are you happy with yours? I mean, I already have my main gaming rig with a 4870x2 so I'm good for the ATI side. I am curious as to how the 280 performs. I may just get it because I wouldn't have to deal with tax or shipping and heat and noise as much either. I dunno... He may have sold it already, but I figured I'd ask. Do you think I could resell it for that price? Maybe to one of you? ;)

By the way, I was going to get the 4890 Toxic once it dropped to around 200. I wasn't planning on getting just any 4890...

If you don't hop on that deal than I will find the money and grab it.

The card is well worth the $130 asking price and you could sell it for more than what you paid for it down the road.

GTX 280's still sell for 220$ here in the forums. They are the same thing as the GTX 285 except for a die shrink and a small increase in stock clock speeds.

yea, can't complain other then it won't OC for crap, plays everything I play well enough. I tend to be pretty pragmatic about these things, I like green but I tend to go with the better bang for the buck. and if you have a 4870X2 you just have no reason for one other then to fold or just plain have it to play with (perfectly good reason in my book)

Of course it's worth it. Even more so, if you were going to get a HD 4890 for more money. It makes no sense to buy a HD 4890, when a GTX 280, which is just a tad faster, especially at higher resolutions, can be had for less money...

Its a deal for sure, but only for local pickup, dont do it otherwise. The price is too low to not test it out before you buy it. Bring your computer with you if you have to.

I didn't know Alienware sold cases with windows so that you could see that the video card matches it.

its still there .P

at that price, it cant be beat and like others have said....test it.

I paid $300+ for my 285. If I had the choice, I would have gone for that deal in a heart beat. Def. a good deal.

The 4870x2 will stay in my main machine. The GTX280 will be for my music production PC, which is also used for gaming by my brother and occasionally me when I'm to lazy to go upstairs while working on music. Both systems are used quite frequently.

Specs on the music production machine are:

Q9550 @ 4.0
UD3P
8gb DDR2-800 @ 942
1tb
4850 (will be replaced with this GTX280)
TX750
Mackie HR824 studio monitors (booya!!!)

130 definitely worth it..

but here comes the problem, is it a legit trade? scam-free?

if you think its safe, then go grab one for sure..

if not, then dont even think about it..

I know a guy on CG that sells them Brand new for 180. I am not sure how he gets them , but they work great

In one of the pics on craigslist, the card is sitting on a carpet.

I'd be cautious of a possibly dead card from the it sitting on the carpet like that. If he would post a pic of THAT, imagine where the card was earlier.

Where is the 4890 faster or on par with a GTX280? the 4890 is on par with a GTX275, which is still slower then a 280/285, most 280s oc at least decently enough to keep it ahead of a 4890, the only time a 4890 should be faster, is in ATI bias games, remember, the 4890 is jut a slightly tweaked 4870, a 4890 should be 5-10% faster then a 4870 too. the GTX280, was a fair bit more then 10% faster then a 4870

its more on less on par, look at the [H] review. http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTYzNiwxMCwsaGVudGh1c2lhc3Q= and most any of them will go to 900 + Not saying its not a good deal (hell I own one) just that the 4890 is a better deal right now. and I don't know that I would say that a GTX275 is slower then the GTX280 with the difference in clock speed though that depends on the game. (not to mention the much better OC potential over the GTX280) and given that a new card comes with a warranty and such. If your buying new and want green the GTX275 is by far the better choice IMO just for the bang for the buck factor. the GTX285 carries a pretty stiff premium for being the fastest single GPU

Can't agree they are equal as far as i know, maybe 5% difference depends from games.
Generally you get the same performance ;)

Since its Craigslist and for that price, it seems a bit suspicious. Make sure you bring a friend with you (esp if it looks shady) and have the guy actually test the card in front of you.

Otherwise go for it if its legit!

no, 4890 is prove to be 10-15%+ faster than 4870.. and no, 280 does not OC much at all compare to 4890 or 275..

while most game I have seen is actually GTX 275 outperform or par with GTX 280...

4890 is GTX 275 level, when it OC it will be slightly faster than GTX 285 on both card....

no love. I think he's backing out. hopefully he calls tomorrow. I have the cash read already.

Heh, I think he realized he's selling that particular card for much less than it's worth...

and then you OC the GTX 285.... Stock to stock or OC to OC, don't compare OC to stock.

ugh, both my GTX 280s have hit 670, and my 285 hits 710
