GTX 260 vs 285?

IMO, I'd consider the HD5850 and HD5870 if you can go with ATi.
 
I wouldn't call a 260 much of a step up from 8800 sli, and both of those prices are horrible. If you are going to spend over $300, get the 5850 atleast, 5870 if you can afford it.
 
There's no reason to get a new GTX 200 card... they're insanely overpriced for their performance. Either get it used or get new tech.

Based on the link you provided, you might want to redo your percentage calculations. I don't think it was ever only 10% faster. More like 15-20% most of the time.
 
I should mention I have to go Nvidia because of the 3D Vision setup

To do 1080p and 3D well you'll need either a 4xx series card or Sli. tbh you might be best off with a GTX 480 for $500 being as 2*GTX 260 costs $450. That gets you DX11 support and means you don't need Sli (which is another thing to go wrong).
 
The price difference between the 480 and the 470 seems to be about $100.

More odd is how newegg does not have either in stock.
 
I like nVidia but the prices on their decent cards really do seem a bit ridiculous. If you're even considering that 275, I would go ahead and pick up two used 260s on the forums at $130/ea and have much better performance for the same amount of money. The 275 really isn't that much faster than the 260 in a lot of scenarios.
 
The 260 is almost two years old now. ATI price/performance is so much better it ain't funny. Btw my last card was an 8800 gt which I loved so I don't care who makes the card. But if I had to choose I would go 285.

I made run a GTX 260 run @ stock 280 speeds. I compared it to a friends rig; he paid almost three times what I paid for my rig and I was benchmarking neck and neck with him. The answer is dont get either. Go with a 5830 or 5850. ;)

I'm using a 1080p 120hz monitor with 3D Vision.... so eventually I plan to do SLI.

Opinions? I currently have two 8800gts 512mb. I can tolerate even gaming on a single card.

GTX285 vs GTX260+ vs 4850 Performance Test

What is your budget?

if you are spending $350 on a GTX 285, a GTX 470 is a no-brainer if you are going to stay with Nvidia
 
GTX285 is much faster than the GTX260, and I've had both.

If you really want a cheap GTX260, you need to go SLI immediately, otherwise it's not an upgrade. Else start with one GTX275/285 or even better an GTX470/480.

If you don't care about the specific nVidia features, then just get a ATI 5870 (or 5970).

Hmm, hard to interpret that. Maybe the ;) means something different?

Anyway, at 1900x1200, I found the GTX260 was unacceptable in many games with the IQ turned on high while the GTX285 was acceptable. That's actually playing games, not 'theoretical' benchmarking.

(Then again, I tend to like things like smooth framerates with image quality options on high. Other people may have different standards.)
 
edit: didn't realize you were already rocking the 8800 GTS 512 in SLI, I have the same setup and if you get a single GTX 260 it will be a downgrade. The 8800GTS 512 in sli sits somewhere around a GTX 280 give or take depending on the game.
 
Well.... I wanted to keep it around $300... but it seems I will have to go up to $400 for a GTX 470.
I am looking at the GTX480 and I just can't justify a $100 difference.


(These cards are out of stock everywhere.. or overpriced if they are in stock)


EDIT:

It seems the Fermin cards can have 3 monitors connected at once? If that is the case then I can go for a $500 card since I won't need to keep any of the 8800GTs to support my 3 monitors when I'm not gaming.

A solid choice. Just keep checking Newegg/TigerDirect/ZZF or the FS forums. They are bound to be restocked; it just comes down to your luck in checking the sites frequently enough to find that the cards are in stock.
 
This is kind of sucks.. waiting for them to be in stock.

In the meanwhile... I see the 470 is also pretty good... and about $100 cheaper. Is the difference between the two about 15-20%?
