Yep, an nice open "test bench" (aka sitting on a cardboard box) has much better ventilation than a closed metal box. Of course, said metal box can be good for keeping the sound of what's inside, well, inside!

It's a careful balance!

Trying to find that balance without spending way too much has largely kept me away from ITX systems...
 
Does anyone here own a 1660 Super Strix, by any chance? I haven't seen that card anywhere.

Anyone use a 1660to at 1440p?

I have a GTX 970 but I've built a good back log of games I felt didn't run well enough at 1080p. The original plan was to stop gap upgrade to the 1660ti and use it at 1080p.

But the 1080p monitor didn't work out and have a 1440p (144hz) on the way now.

At higher settings, I wouldnt expect anything below a 2070/2060Super to do all that great at 1440/144hz if your goal is high FPS with good IQ.

Realistically I'm wondering about at least 60 fps (or thereabouts) and mainly for non commonly reviewed games (since you can just look those up). I'm would assume high/144 fps is out of the question. Really it's still a stop gap for 9 - 15 months until next gen (depending on timing).

If a 2060 Super/2070/2070 Super goes on sale again I'll likely return the 1660 ti (not even opened yet) and move up. The problem is I went with the 1660 ti/1080p 144hz option over the 2060 Super/1440p 144hz option initially with the items on sale. Psychologically I don't really want to buy a 2060 Super (or higher now) as they're almost $100 higher than the sale price I would have paid.
 
Some folks here have had good experiences with the 5700/5700XT too. Flashing a 5700 to XT specs seems to be a decent budget option.
(I havent done it and have personally no interest in AMD's current offerings tho)

At 1440/60hz the 1660TI should do fine.

I have a 2070 non S and it has been great for over a year now. I use it with a 1080P and a 4k monitor with resolutions at 1080,1440 and 4k depending on the game. 60-75hz

It owes me nothing. PNY 2070 OC

1080p would be more useful for high refresh, but 1440p can be playable (I even ran 4K but on some really old games).

You can also consider image sharpening, so you can run at 1080p upscaled to 1440p. I haven't tried on Nvidia, but it works well on AMD.

For comparison, I have a GTX970 in a system with an 8700K (mostly stock due to ITX cooling limitations), and play at 1440p. Essentially I wind up burying the settings on anything remotely modern, but, even stuff like BF:V is playable, and good 'ole BF4 is easily hitting 80FPS - 100FPS.

You'll likely still have to be a bit careful with a 1660Ti, but that's about twice as fast more or less so you shouldn't be giving up too much of both details and framerates on current titles. Just watch out for the odd setting that tanks performance and you'll be good.

I'm pretty much Nvidia focused due to certain functional requirements and benefits. For instance I use the inbuilt gamestream features (due to a specific requirement over other options) for remote gamestreaming, which is also another reason why I wanted ot upgrade to Turing for the improved Encoder (quality) performance.

So unless the AMD deal is way better it's a hard switch for me. For context the 1660ti I bought is about $205 and the 2060 Super deal was about $310 (but I would've needed to rush buy a new case due to size issues, might also be a bit harder to resell due to size/warranty transfer). Best RX 5700 deal I've seen was around $300 (I'd like to keep TDP under 200w, and ideally closer to around 150w due to heat reasons).

The new scaling options and other resolution management options (for instance more games offering a rendering resolution option) are all real interesting as they tackle that long time issue with LCDs and resolution jumps.

I also thought about buying the 4k 144hz Acer XV273K (there was a good deal on it) to leverage the recent scaling options including integer scaling (jsut using it at 1080p for the more demanding games) with the higher resolution.

That a bit of my dilemma. I have a GTX 970 while I wouldn't say it isn't running 1080p60 good enough there is a building (decent sized) backlog of games I've put as I wanted to play with less compromises (a thing is texture size due to VRAM, I'm a bit max texture quality OCD). Looks like the 1660ti will essentially just offset (somewhat) the resolution jump in this case.

This is actually similar and reminding me of what happened when I upgraded to 1080p60 way back. There wasn't many suitable GPU options so I went from the Nvidia 8800GT to the AMD(well ATI) 5770 just to offset the resolution jump. That stop gapped until the 560ti which was more suitable for 1080p60 until the current gen consoles launched.

Hands down the best bang for the buck is the 5700 if you can get it sub-$300 and it's pretty simple to flash to the XT bios. You can undervolt with the bios flash and keep the TDP under 200W IIRC.

I'm kind of disappointed with the 1660Ti performance personally, but the power draw is very low. The 2060 cards (both) are overpriced for what they deliver compared to the 5700. Honestly, I expected a bigger jump with the 2080 Super over the 5700 for double the price.

The 2080 Super gives quite a bit more in 4k than the 5700 series, So if that's your thing, spend the $$$. It's not twice as fast as a 5700 in 1440p either, but its a good bit faster.

I understand people have budgets. The 2080 S is still a lot faster than a 5700.

"A Lot" is subject to debate. At 1440p it's 17% faster in the Techspot review compared to a 5700XT (which is essentially what a flashed 5700 is minus a few shaders). So maybe 20% tops on average. You're paying a substantial amount extra for that extra 20% performance over a 5700. But you're right at 4k, it's ~30% cheaper for about 16% less performance compared to the 2080Ti.

I got a 2070 super from a guy on this forum because he was reselling a brand new card, was accepting Amazon gift cards as payment, and I wanted to play RTX Q2. I got it for the same out of pocket cost I'd have to pay for a 5700 XT. Worth it IMO.
 
found a great price on a used ASUS ROG Strix GTX 1660 Ti and wow, what a card !!!

GPU auto-clocks to 1985 MHz but I've sen it occasionally hit 2 GHz and that's without having to manually OC the card

Runs silent, temp averages 58C during game play (Metro Exodus, Ultra settings)

The LED (aka RGB) on/off button is pure genius :barefoot:

Very pleased with this card ...
