Gtx 1080 benchmarked

I should've clarified, I wait until one generation has passed after my current GPU. I then try to get the new generation, but I honestly don't see myself doing that this time around.

Is it likely that the msi seahawk or evga hybrid cards will be worth the extra cash? Looking at benchmarks of the 980ti vs the water cooled options it looks like it was roughly similar. a few fps or so in the difference for most situations.

Chances are this will go like last time. The 980 looked good till the 980Ti dropped then it just fell flat as a purchase to be recommended. The 970 ( I really wish more were as appalled at the lies as I was and mark the 970 as a dead, eat your losses Nvidia you lying sack of...) and the 980Ti were really the only cards recommended. So the 1080 will look attractive till the 1080Ti comes then the 1080 will fall by the way side.

After going through this twice already with the 780 and 980, I find it very difficult to get excited over an X80 part.
Reading other comments elsewhere, sort of feels like 99% of people are goldfish and have no memory spans beyond 2 weeks ago.

Does no one else remember all the butthurt 780 and 980 owners when the respective Ti parts came out? Why would you do this to yourself FOR THE THIRD time...

Because some people want the most performance they can get at the time...

If all of the aftermarket boards are voltage locked, and more voltage is the key for higher clocks, then all the water in the world isn't going to make it go faster. Truthfully I hope that the MSI Seahawk has some tweaks that allow it to OC better than other cards. That Asus Strix test has me deflated. Hoping that the card was bad or something. Luckily since the GTX 1080FE is so overpriced, the Asus Strix still carries plenty of value as a cheaper option.

Except this card is launching at $150 above the 980. Sure, the 1080Ti will be great, but the msrp will be at a minimum $849 this time around for the reference card, probably for a cut-down card too.

I agree but it is a tad early to make finalized decisions. Hopefully as AMD releases their cards we may get a better idea if prices are indeed higher because of cost or just early adopters tax if you will.

Not necessarily, right now there's no competition from AMD, but they should have a card that competes around the time 1080 Ti releases. So 1080 Ti may cost around the same as 1080.

I would bet that there will be a $100 to $150 premium for the 1080 ti part, if it comes out within 8-12 months. As to why you would get it:

a. You can afford it
b. Fastest single card available for now and for many months to come
c. Sell it (at a loss of course) when the next card is announced

It would be like asking why anyone would buy the iPhone 6 when you KNOW the 6s will be 1.5x to 2x faster, fix hardware issues and have new features at the same price within 12 months.

Well... That's why I upgrade every other generation and I have no problem with ordering two GTX1080 (they should arrive tomorrow!) for SLI to replace my GTX780 SLI.

I also don't really get too upset when someone drives by in a Porsche while I'm driving my Toyota Highlander with 7 seats for my family. It's what I need and the situation I'm in.

Will I be blown away by two GTX 1080ti cards? Absolutely... But compared to the GTX 780s I have right now, the 1080s are a substantial upgrade. I'll likely get a pair of GTX 1280s 3 years from now and skip the GTX1180 cards.

The only person enjoying those GPUs are myself in my free time. I have nothing to prove to anyone... Having more powerful GPUs doesn't make me a better or more successful person. No big deal.

Because some people want the most performance they can get at the time...

Precisely.
