It looks like we might have a new game to really push your video card to the max. If the early reviews of GTA IV are any indication, move over Crysis, here comes GTA IV. Thanks to [H] reader Ray Wilson for the linkage.

I had to knock down the default graphic options quite a bit on my PC (dual-core 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, 640MB GeForce 8800) until I got an acceptable rate, and even then there was the occasional really nasty drop.

I am sure it's because it wasn't originally developed for the PC and it's a crappy port. Yay for crappy ports...

I am hoping this game will look great on my new machine.

Its probably going to be hard on both the CPU and GPU. They recommend a quad-core or X3, so thats pretty impressive. In a stupid, roundabout way, LucasArts pretty much said that the Euphoria engine is pretty taxing on hardware.

Xbox 360 is pretty much a X1xxx right? PS3 a ~7900GS? and modern graphics cards are having issues?

Somewhere between a 1900 and 2900. It shares some aspects of the 2900. The RSX is a downgrade 9800GTX.

That being said, you can't compare specs directly from consoles to PCs. Not only does GTAIV look a lot better, everything is rendered at the resolution you pick, unlike on consoles where its up/downscaled as needed. The PC version also has denser traffic and the optimizations are not the same. The PC wasn't designed with gaming as a primary function unlike consoles so that makes things a lot different.

2.4 Dual core? Is that P4 with HT that some people consider dual core? A neutered lower cache 2.4 ghz cpu? A AMD X2? WHAT! My point being is that I wouldn't get to worked up about this. He has a unknown cpu and a older pre GT card I mean COMEON! :p

2GB of ram is probably stretching it. My guess is that the limited ram is at least causing the sudden drops in performance when it has to swap out texture data to the harddrive.

Any news on a realease date for this one?? Last i heard, it was delayed from late Nov. to sometime in early Dec. Has it been pushed back to late Jan. now?

And I hear it's shipping with SecuROM on it. No thanks. Trying to keep my PC rootkit free.

Then again, it was taxing on 8800. Here to hoping that my GTX280 will be alright. I really wanted to like the game on PS3, but could not. I know that everything I hated will be different on PC, hope it runs ok. I am the kind of a guy which won't be happy until most settings are max.

I'm willing to bet you own some games with SecuROM on them and don't even know it. Its been around for a while.

Nothing wrong with an AMD x2. I use an AMD64 x2 5000+ and it's been a great processor for the last 2 years and counting.

I also have an 8800 GTS 640mb on my gaming rig. Nice coincidence! lol

If def. going to pick this one up as I have with all other GTA releases on the pc. I'll be going x-fire in a week or so, hopefully that will help.

It doesn't matter, The game is already out and his been cracked. It's really sad. They spent all this time making the game and so many people are gonna play it without paying the folks who made it.

/this is why we can't have nice things!

sweet! ya, i thought i remembered hearing 12/2 for release, but couldn't find any hard info... is it on steam? i'd prefer to get it there.

rig in sig - i'll be suprised if i can max the settings, but i won't be too dissapointed if i have to play on medium. been waiting ages to be able to play this game on pc!

edit - yep, it's on steam! i'll be pre-purchasing tonight!

I have an AMD X2 3800+ (oc'd to 2.6ghz) and it's been handling its own just fine for at least two years, as well.

If it didn't come with SecuROM, I would definately buy it. Instead, I think I will opt for the version that I can download, install and play without the disc in the drive...

I did in fact have some that did have SecuROM on them. But I also reinstalled my OS recently and have not reinstalled the games that had SecuROM on them. But that wasn't your point was it Derangel? I think your point was to "school" me? You see, I am a SW dev myself running Visual Studio. So when SecuROM complained about VS I kind of took note and reinstalled the OS.

Glad we're keeping it friendly and all.

I think this game may be harder on the CPU than GPU...

Reason being is that the official requirements recommend a quad or tri core.

My "point" was that its been my experience that many people who bitch about SecuROM do so while owning and playing games with it even while they claim that they'll never buy a game that has it. I find it pathetic and rather annoying when people are that hypocritical.

I said it over at GTAforums yesterday and I'll say it again.

Until he tells us what settings he was at and what he decreased to, his comment is useless fearmongering.

There goes my hopes that I'll be able to play the game maxed out. Hopefully it scales well with Crossfire and I'll have a reason to blow a bit more money this season.

Its possible to toggle SecuROM on or off when you need it to play a game or do other things that it would prevent. Use Autoruns.exe (from sysinternals, now microsoft) and just uncheck the securerom dll and reboot; it wont load.

gears of war 1 and rainbow six vegas was hard on my computer when it came out. just a bad port.

Are you sure about that? I think it still loads the UAService7.exe, I could be wrong though. All I know is I won't install anything with securom on my system.

Hmm, I figured my 8800GTS 640 wouldn't be able to max this out. Hopefully with rest of system (E6600 OC'd, 8GB RAM) I can at least be smooth @ 1680x150@100Hz. :)

A "dual-core" 2.4ghz cpu is not such a good game benchmark. The current 8800 GT is as fast as the older 88GTS. I bet GTA-IV will be good on an E8400 and 88GTS-512, just not @ the highest res. 12*9 to 16*12 should be good. Games like 6MB+ of cpu L2/L3 cache and a good GPU(new 88GTS=old 88GTX).

now that's what i call widescreen. :D

Looks like a poor port to me. It shouldn't need these hardware requirements to run. It's a 360 game which has graphics hardware a couple generations old now.

I went back and read the article. However, I didn't see what his settings where. Was he trying to run it at 1920x1200 with all the bells and whistles turned on or was he struggling to get 1280x720? That would make a big difference as to how "demanding" this game is.
