GT330...another G92 card

Seems like a smart idea, actually. They have an existing graphics card that's cheap to produce that already fills the prerequisite performance bracket. Re-use it and label it so it fits in with the new product line.

Simple...why is this thread-worthy? :confused:

its most certainly thread worthy to me because its about a single chip has now gone through FOUR generations. I am not complaining and I only posted this because its pretty funny.

Because nvidia is trying to pass it off as something new to unsuspecting consumers who only see the higher model number and think it's a better card. It would cost nvidia less money (essentially nothing) to not do this and stand to gain only from uninformed consumers. This makes it your basic scam.
 
it just goes to show how strong the G92 has been. If it can still remain competitive at the price point, then so be it.

Or it just shows that nvidia's newer chips are so large that it is too costly for them to produce them as budget chips.

I don't see how that's relevant. The G92 supports the same feature set as the GT200, so why does it matter if they're using G92 instead of spending extra R&D money shrinking the GT200?

Seems like you want them to throw away money for no good reason :confused:

in laymans terms, they are selling a part worth 10-30 dollars for 50-70 very old tech by having a fancy new name.

just the nvidia drivers and cuda support today are more worth than having the ati 5000 series video cards.

Depends on if you need cuda support and if you actually think nvidia drivers are better than ATI's. I love my 5850.
 
Why the hell do people call this "old tech"? What "features" are included in the GT200 that the G92 lacks? Oh, that's right nothing.

Every automaker is "scumbags" now because they take an 09' accord and call it a 2010 accord!

According to the prevaliant logic in this thread, if AMD develops a "brand new architecture" for it's 5XX0 card it but is slower than a G92 based product for the same price they should be hailed as doing something good.

Preformance, preformance, preformance. That is all that matters. New tech, old tech is irrelevent. Furthermore if you bought a 250 GTS and then go buy a 310 and can't figure out you are buying a "newer, lower end card", you deserve it.
 
Wasn't Fermi going to be released as the GTX 400 series? Wouldn't nVidia want to call the rebadged g92 a GTS420 or something along those lines? So they'd have something along the lines of:

GTS420 (aka 8800gt, 8800gts, 9800gt, 9800gtx, gt240, gts250 -- g92 cards)
GTS450 (gt200 series)
GTX460, 470, 480 (Fermi based cards)

I thought the whole point of the re-badging was so consumers could tell where the card sat relative to the high end GTX480 part -- so everything should have a 400 name so you can tell where it sits. Adding a GT 300 part when there will be no high end parts seems silly. Unless they just want to refresh the g92 with another gt 420 name so it can go through yet another name change.
 
ya, the new cards are 400s, now all the 8800, 9800, 200 cards will be 300s! FTW!
 
How can you guys stand up for NVIDIA? What would you do if I was on eBay and I sold an 8800GT as a GT330 and put it in a GT330 box? Would you be satisfied?

Even cars make upgrades every year. They fix things that were under engineered and make lots of small changes. GT330 is no change, just different box.

As long as said 8800GT performs the same as the expected GT330, it's fine by me. I payed for a certain level of performance, not what it says on the sticker.

then why need a name change? to cover up the fact your still making the same card with a fancy new name to decive the people that buy your products.

i can bet there is at least a 50% price premium on 9xxx named cards than gt3xx based cards that are the same chip inside. your paying a company to lie to you. awesome.
 
It is old tech being rebranded to look like it's new. Don't mind ATI, just having an entire line up of DX11 cards out already and not rebranding old tech.

If they do this, then the latest catchphrase will be:
GTS420. Because you have to be high to think it is a faster card.
 
It seems like every day Nvidia comes out and reinforces my decision to sell my (2) GTX280s and buy a 5870.

That is kind of what happens when the only competitor doesn't have a product, it has nothing to do with "AMD fanboys".

Umm you do know you can't actually BUY a GT3XXX series card? It's an OEM only card. So you think they are ripping off Dell or what? Or is now Nvidia responsible for how dell prices it's products now?

People who see the Dell with something 300 in it will pay more for the same comp as if it had the identical 200.

Seems like they are helping dell rip people off in this case, most likely charge slightly more per unit as well.

how do you not understand this?

it will be listed on there product page. people will see it and it graphics card are normally part of someones buying decision. If someone thinks because something is named a current gen name (2xx/3xx/4xx series) but in reality they are getting something 3-4 years old they can buy on ebay for 10 dollars but are being charged 50 for?

I would love to have you buy a gtx480 or a gts450 and have it be a gtx260 and not have you cry foul, but you will because its a bullshit tactic.
 
For what it's worth, the gt200 series has Double Precision (Compute Capability 1.3) support, while the g92 only has Single Precision, with Compute Capability 1.1.

no they wont because these cards just fill the same price brackets as before. only the name changes and the average person buying a pre built pc doesnt know the difference anyway.

people that buy nvidia must be stupid because they dont care if they are buying 4 year old tech?

intel and amd have made it very clear what is current gen and last gen, is it so hard that nvidia do the same?
