GT300 Release?

Looks like a lot of ATI cards will be bought for Xmas gifts instead of Nvidia if they wait that long. I would think Nvidia is smarter then this.

I think the smart money is on this year. :D

I would like that but I can't see it being actually available this year. it would be nice, even if for nothing other then a price drop for ATI. Eyefinity is looking very nice but OA that playable might be a deal maker for me.

"Interestingly, sources told us that AIC partners will get to design the GT300 cards themselves, which means, no more boring reference cards.
For some reason, I'm not feeling too comfortable with that. I personally prefer that they all start off with a reference design, at least for the standard models. There's no guess work as to how it will perform.

And it makes life easier for aftermarket cooler manufacturers, and consumers happier for the resultant cheaper prices.

GF100? Now, that's nice naming scheme. You can buy GF100, which is faster then GTX250 :p I say their Product Managers and PR must be some kind of genius (ever seen a PM who has at least a bit of brain? I didn't :p)

Yeah, with bogus numbers too:

"We put out a new GPU 15 months ago and the new one has more than doubled in performance.”

And it didn't.
?

The 5870 is easily twice the performance of the 4870.

huh? 4870 and 4850 were released june 08.. 5870 in september 09 no?

I was talking about the "double performance thing".

5870 is not roughly double the performance of 4870?

Some of the reviews that I've read (including the review on this site) state otherwise...

I realize that there are games out there where the 4870x2 outperforms the 5870 right now, but I'm sure with the maturation of drivers 5870 will probably be on par if not exceed in those games over the 4870x2 or the 4870 in cf setup...

LOL, You may want to check your numbers :)
I've owned both cards; what's your experience with them? I mean, you're making statements like this because you actually have experience with both cards, right?

Many of us may not have experience with the 4870 vs 5870 but the [H] and other sites have, and from their numbers, the frames per second of the 5870 are not double those of the 4870. You may be better in referring to the performance of the 5870 pretty much equaling a 4870x2.

No, I'm referring to the original 4870 vs. the 5870. On average, the 5870 doubles the performance it gave me, and sometimes comes close to tripling it. Some review sites that really pushed the cards showed this. In games like Fallout 3 and L4D, I've seen my performance almost triple.

I thought this thread was about GT300...lets stay on topic

I personally believe it will be released in time for xmas...and depending on what the game situation looks like I may pick one up. I still have a nonsensical obsession with maxing out Crysis on my puny 22 inch monitor so who knows...If i can sell my 285 for enough money, this might be my xmas present to myself. It's been a while since I've bought any new hardware.

Cool, too bad there wasn't an Apples-to-Apples comparison with these two cards. The only game compared with both of these cards (on [H]) is Crysis Warhead and the settings for their reviews aren't exactly equal.

they might, they put out a statement that their yields were fine and stated late 4th quarter. that doesn't mean they will actually have cards out in retail though.

yeah, I thought about that also.. I guess it could go either way.. but if a lot of non ref cards come out first batch at the very least try and buy from a known reliable mfg.. eVGA, XFX, Asus, etc.. but maybe they will have the option of sticking with the ref design also? hmmm

here's hoping NV has a trick up their sleeve... i want to see one by the end of the year, that'd be awesome!

No, it's not. It has double THEORETICAL performance, but not double REAL performance.

And your error is to assume that the HD 4870 X2 is double the performance of a HD 4870, which is not.

You know, "average" is not "two games". The HD 5870 is, on average, 50% faster than the previous gen ATI best single GPU card. It doesn't mean that in one or two games, it can't be faster than that, but again, on average, it's not anywhere near double the performance.

All the new rumors point to it. Actually, they point to a late November, early December release, with mass availability in January 2010.

Well it seems GT300 will have to compete with 6870, 6870x2 in February or March 2010

Either English isn't your first language or you lack a fundamental understanding of mathematics. An average accounts for a mean over a series of numbers - some in the series will be higher than the average, some will be lower. So if some games nearly triple the performance, they account for other games where performance doesn't double. But for some reason, after reading some selective pretty graphs you think this gives you the authority to make statements based on products you have no clue about. I pop in now and then to point this out, so that people reading your statements know they're unfounded and incorrect. Continue the discussion of the GT300, I'm not going to go further off-topic on this.

Someone isn't pleased that the HD 5870 isn't double the performance of previous gen...

And to confirm that, you can read ALL the reviews out there. Not just "selective" pretty graphs. I too need to point this out, even though everyone else but you, knows about it.

And yes, let's continue with the GF100 (not GT300) discussion.

Both Fudzilla and Bright Side of News are reporting that GT300 will sport 512 shaders and contains 3 billion transistors. They're also reporting that GT300 will go back to G80's old 384-bit memory interface, with 6 64-bit memory controllers being implemented with support for up to 6GB of GDDR5 memory. Today's GTX 280 utilizes a 512-bit memory interface with 240 stream processors.

GT300 reportedly ships with a massive 1MB of L1 cache which is split into 16KB cache for each shader cluster. The chip also features 768KB unified L2 cache memory. BSN says GT300 supports the latest floating-point standard and natively supports C++

If these leaked specs are indeed accurate, GT300 could be a monster for both gaming and general compute applications. BSN believes that GeForce 380 for desktops will ship with 1.5GB of memory, while Tesla and Quadro boards could ship with 3GB or 6GB...

That's very impressive info,

These cards are turning out to be real powerhouses, but I really hope Nvidia will release some game results soon.

Sorry for being lazy, but has anything physically been shown?

These details have been known by nvidia for months but mass available hardware is what would matter most.

Also, in that flash video it says it is the first gpu arch to support ECC, maybe I miusread something but I thought that was part of Gddr5's capabilities and ATI's latest support it.

Am I wrong on that one.
