I've recently been playing with DosBox again and I'm curious as to what everyone thinks the greatest Dos games of all time are, plus this will help me find some more games to play. :D

Mine:

Blood
Doom
Quake
Star Control 2
Rise of the Triad
4D Boxing
Darklands
Oregon Trail

Wolfenstein 3D
Heroes Quest (Old Blizzard game, I think the name might have changed)
Q-Bert

Star Control 2
Civilization
Colonization
Pirates
Heretic
Rise of the Triad
Doom
Duke Nukem 3D
Master of Magic
Fantasy General
Panzer General
Wizardry
Ultima 7
Might and Magic (not Homm)
Big Red Racing
D&D Gold Box
Eye of the Beholder
Dungeon Master
etc
etc

Darksun. Man I wish the would make another game based off of this world

My Top DOS games of Old;

Wing Commander (Series)
X-Wing / Tie Fighter (Series)
Full Throttle
Doom (Series)
Wolf 3D
Duke 3D
Space Hulk

And the winners are....

The original Prince of Persia
Blood
Duke Nukem
Oregon Trail
Heretic
Rise of the Triad

Nobody for Transport Tycoon? Amazing game, the predecessor to RCT series, I still fire up dosbox to play it.

Cant believe no one mentioned Command and Conquer.

Still love the original and it helped kick start the RTS genre.

What about Dyna Blaster ? Or Liero ? SupaPlex ? Lotus Challenge too. Absolutely fun games, especially when played with friends

As for big ones, I have a few of my own of course:

Duke Nukem 3D
Quake (and expansions, especially the Scourge of Armagon)
Rise of the Triad
Blood
RAC Rally
WarCraft 2

keen series
crystal caves
cosmo's cosmic adventures
duke 1 and 2
(yea i was a fan of the sidescrollers)

cannon fodder
scorched earth
starcon (of course) ur quan ftw
omf 2097 (jaguar ftw)
solar winds (i still don't think i ever finished that game)
tie fighter
corncob 3d (my first real open ended game... AND it was a flightsim, SCORE)
wing commander (don't have enough memory to play that game now, LOL)

and my first real fps shooter... Descent.... wonderful game

  • Wing Commander 2 (before the series went all wanky and FMV as Chris Roberts tried to prove he could be a movie director)
  • Strike Commander, loved that game, great stuff as long as you weren't after a hardcore flight sim
  • Duke Nukem 3D, and having to kill hundreds of enemies per level compared with Quake's 4 or 5.
  • Wolfenstein 3D, truly groundbreaking at the time
  • The Police Quest games (and Space Quest was quite fun too)
  • The Infocom text adventures (Planetfall/Stationfall in particular) which I think you can find and play online now.
  • Alone in the Dark, pioneering survival horror

Perhaps not the "greatest", but definitely the ones I have fond memories of.

Edit: Oh, and Elite, don't know how I could have forgotten that after all the hours I spent on it.

The old Sierra games, the "typing" format especially:

King's Quest 1-4
Police Quest 1, 2
Conquest of Camelot (was that even Sierra?)
Space Quest 1-4 (fucking awesome)

I really miss those. Any sort of bundles that get released these days are all with the "point-and-click" interface. It's not bad, but I got used to having to type in the commands. Typing in swear words in some form usually ended up with some pretty funny results.

X-Wing and TIE Fighter
Wolf3d
Doom
X-Com

Those were easily my favorites.

Transport Tycoon Deluxe
Indiana jones and the fate of atlantis
x-wing / tie-fighter
Monkey Island
...

Too many games to mention, but I had endless fun with Activision's Sci-Fi PowerHits pack.

Mines of Titan
Circuit's Edge
Prophecy
Tongue of the Fatman
Death Track

Nobody for Transport Tycoon? Amazing game, the predecessor to RCT series, I still fire up dosbox to play it.

Amen.

also: Mission critical
Wing commander 1,2,3,4.
Bioforge
Ultima
Aliens: A comic book adventure.
Etc

System Shock
Ultima Series (my favorite being Complete VII and VIII)
Syndicate
Star Control II
Wolf 3D/Spear
Doom Series
BloodNet
I'll just blanket Sierra Adventures (like Quest for Glory, Leisure Suit Larry, etc.)
I'll blanket the Lucas Arts Adventures too (Sam and Max, Day of the Tentacle, Fate of Atlantis, etc.)
Al Qadim
Dark Sun
X-Wing/Tie Fighter
Commander Keen Series
Dark Seed (annoying as hell, but cool for the time)
Another World
Flashback
Fade to Black
Magic Carpet
Omnicron Conspiracy
Quarantine
Wing Commander
Strike Commander
Hexen
Heretic
All the Amiga Bitmap Brothers Converts (Speedball 2, Magic Pockets, Gods)
Duke Nukem/Jill of the Jungle
Raptor
All the Amiga DI converts (Pinball Fantasies, Dreams, Illusions, etc.)
I never really got into them, but the Tex Murphy games were pretty cool.

And what about stunts? I loved building insane racetracks and running them, great game! :D

Original Prince of Persia
Privateer / Righteous Fire
Space Quest 3
Silpheed
Doom

what was the game where you had a red suit and it was game of the year?
I know the red suit is vague but I can't remember the name of it for anything, but it also had cut scene video in game.
I still have that somewhere, it was on cd and the update had instructions on how
to get it to run under win95.

I agree with everyone on their favs...

Wolf 3D
Doom
Tex Murphy series
Bad Mojo
Iron Helix
7th Guest
Myst
all Lucas Arts
all Sierra

For me, using DOS was actually kind of fun in hindsight. Though setting IRQ's and working on the settings always sucked, it was a true testament to computer skills at the time when you knew how to manually install games properly.

why no more mentions of Syndicate and Syndicate Wars? For the times, those games were true masterpieces

Where'd all the love for Mechwarrior go?

Mechwarior... Mechwarrior 2, Ghost Bear's Legacy... Mercenaries (though I think they had a windows95 version too...)

Then X-Wing...

Quake, Doom, Doom 2, Heritic, Hexen...

I loved the King's Quest games, Day of the Tentacle was awesome...

Dunno bout some of you but I thought Leisure Suit Larry was a riot of a series... Police Quest games... hmmm how many of you were frustrated by X-Wing's "You do not have enough conventional memory to run this game"?

I used to make bare minimum config/autoexec files that could free up as much as 600+kb... emm386.exe... himem.sys... mscdex.exe... playing with those files you could eat up that 640k easy or free up...
