Graphics card upgrade

Hi,

After some opinions. I am looking to upgrade my graphics card. I currently have two GeForce 8600 GTs (SLi) but my motherboard only support SLi at PCI-E 8X:

I am thinking of upgrading to a single GeForce 9800 GT:

The core speed isn't much quicker but it has far more shader processors, faster memory / more memory and would be running at 16X on my PCI-E slot.

Do you think I would notice the improvement? I know there are better cards on the market but this is one of the few I have found available with no onboard fan (I like to keep my PC running quiet). I will be cooling it with a low speed 120mm fan however.

According to gpureview the new card should be quite a lot quicker than the current 2 in SLi but the charts on Tom's hardware seem to contradict this...

Comments appreciated.
 
a 9800 gt isnt much of an upgrade. not worth it imo. check craigslist if your short on cash for 4870's and 50's, 80-100 bucks and would be at least 2x your current setup. otherwise a 5770
 
Cheers, I was looking at that card, does seem good. My PSU doesn't have a 6pin but I see the card actually comes with a converter from a 4 pin molex (not exactly the same I know but if the card itself comes with it you would think it would be OK?).

should be fine as long as your PSU is 450 W or better.

as a tip try and attach the power adaptor to an unused rail
 
Cool - thanks again. My PSU is 480W so should be OK and it has one fully sheilded cable ending in a 4 PIN thats off it's own rail so that should be perfect.

ah no.... thats not really a rail. rails come from the PSU and hae all the motox or whatever connectors on them. they come in strips of 4-5 connecters genreally. that PSU might have 2-3 rails(each with 4-5 connectors). try and dedicate one whole strip to the video card. but honestly its not a super big deal.
 
I think many of you arent realizing how slow his cpu is. its going to limit the crap out of any decent card. a 5770 would be really wasted and in more cpu intensive games 50% of its performance would go down the drain.

What PSU do you have? Just because the wattage is there doesn't mean that it has enough amperage or is capable of providing the power cleanly and reliably

Also, are you planning on getting a fanless 9800GT model or what?
