Graphical Client on Vista :(

So I kicked out the Graphical client on my parents PC. When in window or full screen mode, with any draw rate, and any draw type (ball stick, yadda yadda yadda) it is just a black screen. I checked in on it through, rclick sys tray icon, Status, My Folding. It shows a couple percent in... so its folding.

What did I do wrong!? :(
 
Many here don't run the graphical. I still do.

Go into the settings and disable all the graphic stuff like screensavers.

This will get rid of any extra stuff and focus on the folding.

This client works well for me on my older systems.
 
I stopped the graphical after I tried it on several machines and always had some sort of stability issue

 
Yeah, I tried everything... but it still kicked out a black screen.

So I just moved to a console client, ran it as a service. Running smooth as silk.

Pentium D folding at 50% for the HORDE!
 
The graphical client is evil, and not in a good way.

I've never actually used the graphical client as I don't care about anything "pretty" like that and I hate screensavers. Therefore, just because I say so, the console clients are the best. There is also the extra stability of the console clients versus the graphical clients.

One more thing, if you have a Pentium D (like I do here at work), you need to run two console clients on that machine since the regular console client will only use one core. Create a second folder for another console client and do the configuration like you did for the first client except in the options you will need to set the second client up with machine ID 2 instead of 1. After that is done, you will have it folding at 100% instead of 50%. Do not do this with hyperthreading CPUs since there is only one physical core.

 
Its my parents machine. I tested with 100% (on Vista) and the machine is just too sluggish. They have 1 gig o ram, and just running Windows and the regular background services its taking 500+ :(

So I set to 100% on 1 client (leaving 1 proc open), and you can't even tell its running. Figured running 2 would bring them too close to their 900 available.

Ah, I see the reason. There just isn't enough RAM for the OS as it is. There are ways to minimize the amount of RAM the clients use. When doing the config with the console, select "yes" to change the advanced options. There you will be able to set the max amount of RAM for the client to use. At that point you can select anything up to the amount of RAM in the machine. You should be able to get by with 50-75 meg of RAM if not lower. There should be plenty of work units out there which only use 10-20 meg of RAM total.
