So G-ma needs a new computer and I already have a system built. And currently it has a e-geforce 8600 in it. I'm getting a free Galaxy 9500gt 1gb from the drawing we had here. Which card would she be better off with. She looks at pics and home videos n such and trolls the webz. Or would neither of these be needed and on board would be fine. She will probably be upgrading to a 19 or 22" monitor... Thanks in advance.

If Grandma is purely 2D then yes onboard video is fine. If you already have a video card you can throw in it at zero cost to you then why not.

Agreed. Since you already have the card and have currently no other use for it, put it in her system. I built my father a computer earlier this year that has the 690G chipset which includes onboard graphics and seeing as how he doesn't game, it runs silky smooth even with two displays.

Honestly don't think it matters. Even Intel integrated would be enough. Give her whichever card is the quietest.

+1

and if you want, you can send me the other card as well =) (ill pay shipping)

but really, just go with the quietest card.

most of the builds i have done for people they have told me how they love how quiet the computer is.

Ive never owned a non gamer card, how does the 9500gt 1gb stand up against like 8600, 8800 etc. im just cllueless when its not a gamer card.

Best way to do it.

Or any cheap card, because you don't need anything special.

the 9500gt is between the 8600gt and 8600gts performance wise. 1gb on the 9500gt is completely useless and the card isnt even strong enough to make use of more than 256mb for games.

That's weird my grandma has that exact rig! I don't blame her though... all of that pro gaming she does. Although this may appear "kick-ass" at first, it's pretty embarrassing that she not only owns me at gaming, but makes me a pie after we're done with a COD 4 session to add value to my existence. Then she goes out and runs a marathon after smoking two packs of cigarettes, wins, challenges Chuck Norris to a duel, wins, and then proceeds to beat me at picking up women... Does anyone have some rope and a ledge?

LOL!

Anyway, Rydawg5143, if that PC has onboard video, then remove the 8600GT since it's just sucking up power and providing nothing in return. However, if that PC does not have onboard video, then just keep the 8600GT in it. Zero point in swapping it out for the 9500GT since she doesn't game.

Jack Thompson once beat Chuck Norris by Christian debating him to the point Chuck Norris went insane and killed himself.
Impossible, Chuck Norris ends all debates with a roundhouse kick to the face.

And 16gb's of DDR3

Well, if she surfs the net as much as the OP indicates, then she would most likely be downloading things. She will need at least 3 1TB drives in Raid.

To OP, yes, on-board will do fine.

And a 15TB backup server. Running RAID 5 (or whatever is more efficient, can't have those files copying slowly :D )

She could always invest in an off-site iSAN. Or just get a few dual quadcore ESX boxes.

OP, honestly just find a motherboard with onboard video.

(thought I would post something helpful before the lock and possible ban hammer).
