GPU Overclocking

Ok, so I think I am now brave enough to start overclocking my 9600GSOs to try and boost PPD a bit. I've never really done any GPU overclocking before and I have a couple questions.

Stock speeds on these 9600GSOs = 550 Core, 1325 Shader, and 800 Memory and they are doing ~3500 PPD on 353's and ~3300 PPD on 787's. GPU temperature is 64C under full load during folding.

I was planning on using Riva tuner as I am currently using it for tweaking the fan speeds. Is Riva Tuner ok to use for overclocking these days or should I switch to NVIDIAs tool?

Do I have to bump up all values or can I just bump up the shader speed? Shader is what we are primarily concerned with right? Is there a general rule of how much to bump at a time?

Sharer is what matters most, but some suggest you'll be more stable if you OC the core acordingly. As for what app, Riva is fine. I prefer nvidia tools but that's just me

Ok, thanks. As I adjusted one, the other one increased accordingly by itself so the issue is moot.

Well, so far I've overclocked one of the cards to 650MHz core and 1625MHz shader and I've gained about 375 PPD according to fahmon. :D Temperature hasn't changed. :cool:

Can it handle moar? I'd sure like to get above the 4K PPD mark on these 353 pernters. I'm at 3910 now. :D
 
4050 PPD now with a 700 MHz core and 1750 shaders. :) That's about a 500 PPD difference, nice. Temp is actually down a few degrees as I bumped the fan to 75% just in case. :cool:

Actually, stock speeds are 600mhz, and the memory is faster (the shader, I don't remember).

It 'downclocks' to 550 when not being used. But fire up F@H, and it will goto 600mhz.

GPU-Z is showing it staying the same when folding. There is no downclocking during idle taking place on these EVGA cards.

Anyways, I am pleased to say I am very stable at 725 MHz clock and 1812 MHz shaders while hovering around 56C at 75% fan speed. I'm very happy with this as I am now over 4100 PPD on both 353 and 787 point projects. The 787's have seen the greatest benefit of this overclocking. I haven't tried overclocking the second, my primary card in the first slot, yet. It tends to be a bit warmer so I will need to watch that more closely.
 
I have an eVGA 9600GSO card! It's downclocking while not being used for F@H (not sure about gaming, don't do any nowadays... I blame Kendrak for that).

GPUz and the nVidia tool show the same story.

Do you have the dual slot version?

Are you in XP/Vista/7?

In 7 it would 'downclock,' but only if I set the PCIe power management to any sort of setting (other then 'unmanaged').

I guess it was just me, then.
 
Yes, XP 64-bit. 182.50 NVIDIA Drivers.

I'm now up to 700 MHz and 1750 MHz shaders on my primary card. Not far off from the overclock on the second card. Everything running well. 64C on the primary card.
 
64C? Are you running it in a case? That seems a little high (sorry, but my laptop temps are lower then that).
 
Yeah in case with plenty of airflow, second card is at 54C and primary is at 64C. Not sure why the 10C difference unless it's because the second card is right next to the primary so it probably just doesn't have as much "clean air" as the secondary. 64C is still an OK GPU temp. When you start to get into the high 70's and low 80's, you better worry. :D
 
It actually might also be the fact that I haven't upgraded to the experimental version of Core_11 on this card yet but I have upgraded on the second card. The experimental version is supposed to deal with overheating issues on big protein WUs and I am crunching a 787 pewnter right now. I'll have to remember to upgrade the Core in 2h when this WU finishes and check temps again.
 
Sorry for the late response.

I don't have the new core yet, but I never seen temps over 47C!

I also have a dual slot card (though the cooler was replaced by a Zalman vf900 :cool:). I always assumed dual slots were the best, and they probably are, for inside a crapmed case.

Dunno if I should post this.
 
Temps under 80C are fine.

The client will crash before any damage can be done to the card.

(In most cases) ;)
 
The shaders will overclock in 54 Mhz steps.
If you set a value between the steps it will not move from the step.

The steps are at 1620, 1674, 1728, 1782, 1836, 1890, 1944, 1998 mhz.

So at 1750 your running at a shader speed of 1728.
If you have your sharders unlocked from the core then set it to ~1730, you wont see any difference in PpD.
If I remember right the core overclocks in 9 mhz steps and you need two steps for one shader step.
But a each shader step gives you ~6x the boost of a core step, so I dont dother to remember each core mhz step.

Right now I am running at 725/1812 on both cards and very pleased with the performance increase. I shoulda done this a long time ago.

I still am not convinced about OC a 24/7 machine.
Underclock, however, is golden.

But then, I am probably a minority on HardOCP. :D

There is a tick box in Rivatuner you can untick that unlocks the core from the shaders.

See if you can run stable at a shader speed of 1836mhz.
I use either Furmark or ATITools to check the overclock.
If you see artifacts when you stress test the card the folding will fail.
If you cannot see artifacts then try a faster overclock untill you do, than take it back one step ...... :p

But if you are right on the edge you will get more EUE's.
Which is why I tend to run most of my 9800GTX's at 1890mhz and not 1944mhz.
They will run at 1944 but when they start to EUE they dont stop untill they've shut down for 24 hours.

1836 MHz shaders is very stable, I think I may just leave it here. I'm also running 5C cooler since switching to a 353 point project from a 787 point WU. I guess it was just a very chewy WU I was working on to bring the temp up to 64C. The experimental Core_11 might be helping as well.

yep i just leave the core/shaders locked and then increase it based on the 54mhz shader steps.. gpu really isnt as important with folding now.. going from 600 to 800 on my 8800GT only gains me 125ppd but increases my load wattage on my entire system an extra 55w.. and adds about 10C to the max temp.. usually i run 735/1836/1015 or 754/1890/1015..

yeah..

lol my 8800GT has been running no lower then 735/1836/1015 or 754/1890/1015 for going on a year now and the cards at full load 99% of the time.. stock clock for the card is 600/1502/900.. but at the same time i am not using the stock cooling..
 
Now that I have a very stable overclock, I'm thinking of flashing these changes to the GPUs BIOS using nibitor and nvflash so I can move these cards to a Linux boxen next week. Has anyone done this before, is this relatively safe to do or am I asking for trouble?

dunno.. didnt know you could even flash the bios on the GTX 295 and GTX 275.. i know you can with the 8800GT since i already did it..

Yeah, you can but I don't have either of those. I'm talking about my two 9600GSOs. Someone else was talking about other cards in my thread. :)
