I’m building a gaming rig it will have custom WCing.
I’m struggling with GPU and CPU choices.
Would prefer RTX 4080 or 4090
Or 5080
So which generation and i5 or i7
My board will run 13th or 14th gen.
Will the 14th gen i5 handle a 4090 or 5080?
13 gen i7 will handle 5080?
From what i have read the 13th gen and 14 gen intels, not that big of a difference.

Seems like an odd choice to buy into Intel 13th/14th-gen given their propensity for dying and the mitigations made to try to stem that.

And you've said nothing about budget, what games you play, desired display resolution/refresh, any other important apps besides gaming.

But yeah, those CPUs should probably be able to keep those GPUs fed for most everything. But an AMD X3D CPU would do better.

9950X3D and a 5090. Anything below this for a 300-500 bucks custom water cooling seems like a waste of time.

the MSI intel board came with a waterblock and I wanted to build a custom WC'ing setup. The last 4 or 5 builds have been AIO setups. I enjoy building rigs.

13900 14900 285k 9950x 9950x3d
Are all overkill for gaming.

12700k is fine paired with 4080
if youre planning on playing in 4k any 8p core processor will be fine.
Even with 5090.

IF intel is your only choice 14700k will be the best bang for your buck otherwise just grab a 14900k read up on it ans call it a day

Ended up with 13700K, thinking RTX 5080. Appreciate the sound non judgemental advice.

With a 4080 class chip, the 12700k is a little on the low end. I would prefer the 13700k as its usually cheap and has quite a gain over the 12700k, and all the power fixes in microcode have really made the gap between 13th gen and 14th gen shrink a lot. I personally really liked my 13700k and wish I didn't get rid of it, that was capable of a really nice overclock and ran cool. Owned/tested all 3 gens extensively, I have a lot of spreadsheets saved from benching them lol

I have a 14700K paired with a 5080 that does well so a 13700K should be fine. Just make sure you’re running the latest bios for your motherboard and you should be fine.

Why would you not get a 9950x3d for that rig - it is the fastest gaming cpu overall and a not-dead-end as far as a platform goes.

He already has a board, I suspect hes trying to get best bang for the buck with a good GPU upgrade. I would rather have a 13700K and 5080 than spend $1000 changing platform to a 9950X3D and not having a GPU at all.
