What would be a good GPU + CPU recommendation for Gaming and photo/video editing (D800 large RAW files) smoothly on a Dell U3011 (2650x1600 resolution).

I do not care for the latest and the greatest. As long as I do not experience lags while performing those tasks on that resolution, I am happy.

Thank you

A budget range would help. My Sandybridge i5 2500k and EVGA 670 FTW work great together at that resolution.

GPU: Minimum 7950 or GTX670, faster cards will yield better performance.

CPU: If you are buying from scratch, i5-3570k.

I doubt you will be able to maintain 60FPS at that res with a 680 and a 2500k. Do you plan on maxing games out? If so which ones.

same, i would recommend an sli/crossfire setup.

Not ultra max, but one notch below max setting would suffice I guess. I play Skyrim, borderlands 2, Skyrim, some RTS. Pretty much games that good rating across the different genre.

I try to stay away from SLI setups because of problems/support ets. But if I were to go down this route which cards would make sense?

If you go with multiple GPUs, go with NVIDIA. They have smoother multi-GPU frame times.

I would suggest two GTX670s for that resolution and the games you play. If you are heavy into Skyrim texture packs, it may be worth getting 4GB cards - otherwise 2GB cards will work fine.

Agreed.

2x 670's and a 3570k @ 4Ghz+ will do just nicely.

If I go with the 670 SLI setup along with i5-3570K, which PSU units would you folks recommend?

Would a good quality 750w suffice or should I go with something wit more power?

Yeppers, 750 is plenty with some headroom for sli 670 and 3570k overclocked.

Not trying to hijack this but would two 660ti Superclocked in sli work good at this resolution? I recently put together a system with a 3770k and 16 gigs of RAM with a 660ti SC, I think I might have sold myself short on the video card and would like to update the Monitor I have to something in 2560x1440.

those 660ti's are hugely limited by the ram bus in big resolutions like these so you should be fine but your ram will always be playing catch up.

Check my sig, new system I built in November.

My i5-3570K + GTX-680 + 16gb DDR3, are more than enough for games I play. BF3 @ Ultra max settings, smooth as butter running 2560 x 1600. Planetside 2 also plays great at Highest settings. I see no need for SLI for me I satisfied.

750 would be fine for a 670 3570k setup and would allow for typical overclocking with plenty of room to spare. personally I would go with a high guiltily 850 watt psu as that would mean no issues upgrading to a higher power using sli setup down the road.

I've not had any issues running a single 7970 at 2560x1440 with a 2600K. High levels of AA aren't all a big deal to me, especially given the higher PPI I'm running at now versus my 24" 1920x1200. I suppose I might hit wall at some point but my bet is that won't really happen until the next consoles are out and I'd be looking at an upgrade anyway by that point.

You can get away with a single 7950 in a lot of games. You may have to turn down a couple of settings in some games.

I agree that 670 in SLI will serve your purpose but you will need 2 of them for that resolution and you still will not be able to max certain games with a high minimum FPS already out such as Far Cry 3, Hitman and Sleeping Dogs.

I tried just about every setup before finally settling on 2 7970's, Far Cry 3 runs just as smooth with Radeon Pro. ATI won this round with there hardware; a reason why next generation consoles are all going ATI.

A single 7970 Ghz edition would serve your purpose and a i5 2500k is just fine for gaming.

See my sig, I have exactly what you're looking for. I game at 2560x1600 and I shoot exclusively in RAW and edit in CS6. You didn't mention a budget, but a 2500K + 7950 and some overclocking is all you really need. You can go higher/newer and get a 3570K or 3770K or get a 7970 or multi-GPU, but you'll be getting little extra for a lot more money. I'd advise against a GTX 670 setup at this resolution as it's unnecessary and more detrimental to the gaming experience (microstuttering, noise + heat, etc.), but if you aren't overclocking at all it might be necessary.

A single 670 will work just as well as a single 7950, especially for this purpose.

No, a GTX 670 is more limited the higher the resolution. There have been articles written on it: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-660-ti-memory-bandwidth-anti-aliasing,3283-13.html . The GTX 670 also doesn't have nearly the overclocking headroom that a 7950 does. Finally, the 7950 is almost always cheaper than a GTX 670, usually <$50. There's objectively no reason to recommend a GTX 670 for the OP's uses.

I honestly noticed very little difference between a GTX670 at 1225mhz and a 7950 at 1100mhz at 2560x1440.

I would go with 7950 too but for it to be competitive you need to overclock it and it will run hot. So you have to be sure to get one with a good cooler like the gigabyte windforce.

7970 is fine with my asus pb278-Q. Not max everything but pretty close. still looks damn good.

Not worth it imo. I seriously dont see any difference running 2560x1440 with 2xaa and 4af compared to 1920x1080 8xaa and 16af.

650w would still have headroom with two GTX 670's OC'ed along with a OC'ed i5.
headroom yes but not all that much unless you want to push that psu fairly hard at times. I like to have lots of headroom so my psu never has to work hard or ramp the fan up. a 750 watt psu would cost little to nothing more if you find a good deal and will provide a better long term isolation.
