X1600, X1650, X1800, X1900 AIW, X1950 (including AGP), should all now be supported.

Still working on G80 support.
 
Very cool. Now I wish I'd gotten the x1600 instead of the 6800 :(
 
Excellent ! I will need to explore the possibilities for the x1800 that I bought 6 months ago anticipating the GPU client :)



 
What sort of performance difference are we looking at, now that these GPUs are officially supported?

There is no data yet. This is still a beta client (GUI version only) and it's not a open beta. It's only been in closed beta for about 6 hours. I'm very interested in this new support. A AGP version of the 1600 Pro is only $103. This could breath some new life into some old folding boxen.

Nice that lower end cards are being supported but wonder the value given that one has to sacrifice a cpu core to run it?
 
I seem to recall someone on the official forums saying he had basically hacked a 1600 to run, but that it was dead dog slow. See here:

I'm skeptical that it's worth it since you basically lose the ability to run a regular work unit on the one core. Now with a X1900 series card this loss is more than made up by the points yielded by the GPU client. If you go and put in a 1600 series card and get 1/4th the points, well... it's marginal. BUT it is still useful scientific work, which is my main concern, not the points.

If a 1600 is all you have/can afford, great, go for it. BUT you can find X1900 series cards used for about $200-250 now, and after the R600 is released, even more will be sold off to make way for the newer cards. Gravy time. :)

Well if you're dropping AGP 1600's into 1ghz P3's or Tbird athlon machines, I think it could end up being worth it considering those 2 cpu types aren't major producers anymore. It would just come down to how much more work is being done to justify the new card. My 2 cents.


 
Also worthy of consideration - the GPU client does a lot more work on its specific problem than the CPU does on that problem. Less points are awarded, but in terms of actual work done it's more. So an outdated machine can get more actual work done for Stanford with an x1600, even if it doesn't show up in terms of points.

Or I could be wrong :p
 
An x1600 can do 275 PPD (or higher) depending on clocks, and what CPU/MB you pair it up with. Even if you trade in a 110 PPD from the CPU, you still net 175 PPD additional at the least. And with some older CPUs, you loose even less on the trade, so the net gain is even more.

Where can you spend $100 on any hardware, and add 200 PPD to an existing computer?
