GPU client plus D3D/OpenGL apps means instant BSOD?

Just had a BSOD in WinXP when I tried to run a test demo for one of my company's game. The precise error message was that an infinite loop occurred in the display driver.

System is:
AMD Athlon X2 4450e
4 GB DDR2 RAM
NVIDIA GTX 275
Corsair VX550

I was running an SMP client in VM (notfred) and the GPU client at the time. After rebooting (reset) the demo ran fine, yet I'm scared now to resume folding. I absolutely can not have this system crashing on a regular basis as it's my workstation. Setting up my workspace again is annoying enough, but the possibility of losing data or worse is unsettling.

Any thoughts?

you need to pause the gpu client when your running games.. some cards dont freak out but ive yet to run a card that hasnt.. so next time before you start the game/app pause the gpu client and everything will run fine..

I kind of wish it'd do it automatically... I may not always remember to pause the GPU client :p

ya have to remember.. its either we get to enjoy using a light weight application or we end up having to deal with a bloated application because they have to keep adding coding to it so that the end user doesnt have to do anything.. personally id rather have full control of what im using then letting the program do it for me.. but if you really wanted im sure you could make a script that automatically closed/paused F@H when a specific application is owned..

Weird, I've accidentally left my GPU clients running and started playing BF2 or L4D and it still runs ok. It makes the game skip a little so I usually remember when that starts happening though, heh. But yeah, definitely recommended to pause you GPU client while running any other 3D applications/games.

Yeah, I have ran a few other 3D apps before with the GPU client running without any apparent ill effect. It just sucks that when it goes wrong it seems to blow up spectacularly :(

Having it auto-pause when specific applications run isn't an option for me as I run a lot of different executables in my line of work (game development), so it isn't plausible to add it to some list or similar. I wonder whether there isn't some way using the NVIDIA driver or so that I could detect the specific kind of access...

The GPU client needs to have been stopped before the game/application is launched. Otherwise, as you say, the GPU freaks out. I always get NANs when I run the client while gaming, but I've never heard of BSODs.

Are you using any CUDA feaures?

Some of our game tests are with PhysX enabled, which may play a role.

Anyway, this probably means that the coming weeks my output will drop drastically as we're having to test more and more alpha (soon beta) builds. I think I'll lose about a third to two thirds of my output.

Just shut the client off when you need the gpu. Do it a few times, it'll become a habit and you won't have any more problems.
