Hey guys,

I have an emachine laying around doing nothing that I want to possibly turn into a F@H box. Its a P4 3.2ghz machine with 4gigs of ram. It has a pci express x16 slot but I'm unsure if its 2.0 or 1.0.. I believe its a 1.0 so that kinda limits my gpu choices. What is the best gpu I can install for this purpose?

That doesn't limit your choices, all pci-e x16 2.0 cards are fully compatible w/ 1.0 slots.
 
Are you serious? Well that's GREAT news!.. That begs the question of what the 2.0 profile brings to the table then?
 
Future expandability. It has a bigger bandwidth, but none of the cards use what is available in 1.0 yet.

 
Well that means I'll have another computer folding soon then becuase I can actually use that emachine for somethign useful

replace the bestec PSU before it dies it kills you MB/ram/cpu/gpu. I see at least 1 e machine a week that died and left little more than the HDD, and cpu/ram if the owner was lucky, intact.

I second that.. Those PSU are destructive when they go, which is very often.

 
Thanks for the heads up. I've been running that setup with a zalman 850 watt ps becuase it was a big raid but now I'm on WHS on a differnet box so I was going to go back stock but I'll get a new ps for that box.

depends. some of the older ones were more reliable, when the moved from the beign cases to the dark gray / black cases they became less reliable. many of the ones in the darkish gray are fine. the black cases one are definitely unreliable.

its really hit or miss TBH, but in general e machines are risky. If you have a bestec power supply and value your data, replace the PSU.

After all, we are talking about the wal-mart special that can be had sometimes below $400 or even $300. You can't expect the world from it.

I'm just givng you a heads up. I'm a computer technician and one of the things I see the most is an emachine that got fried by its PSU, and the owners don't like hearing how much its gonna cost for a new MB, a new PSU, a new CPU and RAM (in some cases), and the labor fee for putting that all in the emachine case and reinstall windows.

Being a computer tech for better than 20 years, I can assure you that if you have an e-machine more than a year with out it dying a horrable death I would start considering your next move when it does (knock on wood).
Ever since e-machine has been in buisness I have tried to steer people away from them since I have repaired many, many of them.
Low cost is thier strong suite not reliablility.
They were basacally made to be a desposable computer, once it breaks you just pitch it in the garbage and buy a different brand or custom built which I specialize in.
Hope you have many more great years with your e-machine but please understand that these computers were not made with [H]ard core computing in mind.

Edit: File servers don't usually go through the pounding a gaming rig or folding machine go through. They just serve up files from a more than likely after market hard drive. Much less strain on power supply and board components.
 
I just looked at the PS that came with my emachine and it says its a "delta electronics" one and it says its a 300w power supply but this should suffice becuase its just a standard 3.2ghz P4 with no harddrives running the notfreds diskless folding.

Is this the PS you guys are saying is a crapper?

Is that the DPS-300BB model with the really short board connectors? if yes then yes that has been an issue in many systems I have had to repair.
If you are not pushing it hard it should be fine for some time, but it's when you start adding large video cards and extra hard drives and such is when I have seen most of the failures.
 
I'm not sure what you mean about really short but all the wires are somewhat short , its a short tower. I did look at another OLD emachine power supply I had laying around and that one definatly says Besteq on it so I think I'm going to throw that one away.

I should be fine with the other one since its not powering any harddrives or video cards.. just the optical drive and mobo.
