GPU Block

I had a question that I've searched around for but haven't seen an answer to.

I've got a GPU block in a kit (I was originally just going to use the CPU block and thats it). But I've been considering using the GPU block as well. But its just a generic block, no coverage over the ram. Do I need to buy ram mosfets if I use this block? Or should I just not bother at all.

Its an Asetek kit.
 
Need to know what video card you are thinking of using it on to be able to answer your question.
 
HIS 4850. Temps aren't bad normally I just wanted to try everything I suppose...

I honestly would. I have blown cards in the past (4870 for one) because I failed to put sufficient coverage on the mosfets. I had to RMA it (and traded up in turn for my 4870x2) but it taught me a lesson, don't skimp on cooling when it costs pennies extra (literally, the sinks aren't that expensive). Its definitely worth it.

How will these sinks be cooled, if you are watercooling your rig and there isn't THAT much airflow in your case? Do you need an auxiliary fan just for the vid card?:confused::confused:

Just having the sinks on them with no forced air will help lots. If you want you can mount a small fan on your card(s) to keep airflow on their surface.
 
There are a few ways actually:

You could get a really small, really quiet 20 or 30mm fan and jerry rig it to blow over the sinks

If your card is open, you can use the case's airflow to blow over the sinks (depending on your card situation and other slots availability

Depending on the size of the sinks and the amount of heat they put out, you may be able to pull it off passively. Depends, if you put smaller sinks on a chip that gets hot, youd need an active solution yet if you put a much larger sink on the chip, you could probably get away with it passively.

Think about it this way: If you can touch the sink when the card is under load, it can be passive on the other hand, if you cant hold your finger on the sink for more than a second without burning yourself, you need either a bigger sink or an active solution.
