This sounds like a great idea until a drug dealer uses it to wipe his phone before the police can get their hands on it. Honestly, how long do you think it will take for an app like this to be misused?

Some day soon, when pro-democracy campaigners have their cell phones confiscated by police, they'll be able to hit the "panic button" -- a special app that will both wipe out the phone's address book and emit emergency alerts to other activists.

The panic button is one of the new technologies the U.S. State Department is promoting to equip pro-democracy activists in countries ranging from the Middle East to China with the tools to fight back against repressive governments.

LOL, they should add countries like the United States, Great Britain, France etc. to that list  Those are the same people that are working to make it illegal for you to encrypt your own private data.

I would hate to work the customer support desk for the phone that had this feature.

Customer: My phone is not working.
Support: What happened?
Customer: I needed a phone number quickly so I hit the panic button as I was in a panic to get the number.
Support: Well, you told the phone to erase everything.
Customer: WTF!?! I want it to go back to how it was before.
Support: Um, you can't.
Customer:

Yeah, my first thought on that the government will use out tax dollars to fund it's creation and then make it illegal to use in the US.

Will this application only work in the government sanctioned Free Speech Zones that are regularly used?

So, im to trust some random 99c app not to destroy all my data on my phone, unless i specifically tell it to

How long do you think it will take countries around in the middle east to outlaw this App? :p

Actually, there should have already been a class action lawsuit against every cell phone maker for engineering and implementing hardware and software that lets the government control our phones silently without our permission.

Regimes in need of revolutionary overthrow tend to shoot first and take your phone second. I wonder if any of these geniuses thought of that.

As if Drugs should be illegal. Keep your Taliban police state away from me, thanks

Hehe double oppression. Oppression once by stealing your money and twice by not letting one use something. Life, liberty and pursuit of happiness indeed.

lets see,

1. app will have a GPS enabled feature, that disables the panic button when crossing into the US and or E. U.

2. any phone found in places that need the app, get the owner shot.

everyone wins!

er, should have been, any phone found with the panic button activated, gets the owner shot, its been a long week.
