Got my Westinghouse LVM-37W3 37" 1080p display today!

What do I need to buy in order to watch TV on this monitor? I'd like to be able to watch plain ol' cable here in my dorm, and when I'm at home I'll have a Time Warner Digital Cable box to connect to that has a bunch of HD content as well as SD. I'd prefer to not have to connect to my computer at all, but if there are reliable and quality ways to do it, I wouldn't mind a TV card solution.
I have one of these. I paid $70 for it. It's a DVD recorder with NTSC tuner, plenty enough for basic TV watching needs, and I can record programs when I'm in class, etc. It doesn't have a dual tuner (many entry-level recorders don't), but you get what you pay for. Just plug it in to the Westy through composite, S-video, or component (no real difference, since the signal is 480i) and turn it on. Simple as that. Image quality is as good as it gets for SD on an LCD 1080p set.

I believe so. Taken directly from their "About PCNation" page:

"We carry more than 80,000 items that are shipped from one of forty nationwide distribution centers including our state-of-the-art corporate headquarters and distribution center in Chicago, Illinois."

I always tend to look at that sorta thing before I order to see just how long it will really take to get to my place. I'll let ya know if it really does ship from there.

I am up here in the Seattle area and orderd mine from PC Nation. Fedex hosed me on the shipping date but, mine shipped from Texas and then to Chicago and then over to me. Took about 5 extremely long days. :D

Yikes. I was hoping it'd come straight from Chicago, but now I'm guessing that it won't.

Out of curiousity, how long ago did you buy it and what firmware did you get?

Hey guy's wich of the westy's that are 1080p have also a tv-tuner that will allow me to use this as a tv monitor too?

I bought mine in Feb and I got firmware v1.0

As far as a desk would go for this thing, would an IKEA Jerker suffice?
The faq in the first post specifically mentions the Jerker.

Can anyone comment on splitscreen gaming with this display? I often play 360 with friends (two play splitscreen), so I need a TV that is large enough for this. With my current 27" SDTV detail really suffers.

Thanks.

The LVM-37w1 has an NTSC TV tuner, but no HD tuner. This (and more) information is contained in the FAQ posted on the first page of this thread. :)

1.5 here, and I bought mine in March. I'm still confused about the whole firmware thing but I haven't had any real problems with mine and don't have a PS3 to test it with, but it's working great for what I use it for (primarily as a monitor with occasional XBOX use).

Glad to hear you opened it up and you are now using it. We told you that you would love it. I also use mine primarily as a PC display and for my 360 but I must admit that since i built my new PC and got this monitor the 360 has been getting a lot of dust :D! I haven't had one problem with mine knock on wood. the only problem I have is with the PIP settings don't save after you switch back to your main source. But that is not that big of a deal since I do everything on my desktop. Freaking love this thing and the firmware versions are super confusing.

Man this is killing me. I want to buy this for my game room but the whole ps3 handshake issue is killing me. I read somewhere in the thread that you can sent it back to Westinghouse to get the latest Firmware but does anyone know how much that will cost.

Not sure what page it is on I think around page 160 some guy did it and said that it solved the issue. But remember that you have to eat the cost of shipping. I don't have a PS3 and never plan on getting one but I remember reading that you may be able to get past it going with a HDMI to DVI cable or using a HDMI switch.

I might have to try this out then because this display is just too great to pass on.

That is what I say, this display is amazing and the PS3 issues will be fixed so day. The issue from what I understand is sony's problem and they need to fix. I am not a Sony fan but I don't like to hear people having issues with a $600 product. The monitor itself is insane and for the price can compete with any other display on the market. Picture quality is amazing and again if you want simply stellar you will be paying like $1700 for a 26" NEC. So if you don't have a need for that kind of quality which will own the westy, this thing is perfect. PC Gamer recommended it over the Dell and HP 30" monitors last month. So the cat is out of the bag.

Tomorrow night or Wednesday night, I am going to set up my 2x 37'' Westy's on Supreme Commander's dual monitor support...And will post pics as soon as I do!

I can't wait..

Yeah, I'm not positive on this.. but I seem to remember there was some way to fix the issue without the firmware upgrade.. and I think it was to disable the audio over HDMI. there's a thread over on the AVS forums about this..

edit: hrm.. I just scanned through AVS and seems that the fix is either use the HDMI to DVI conversion cable going to DVI2 on the Westy, or go component. also, check this out: http://www.popularmechanics.com/blogs/technology_news/4212233.html iiiiiinteresting.

interesting comment from a link within that link:

We asked Patrick Seybold, a senior PR manager for Sony Entertainment about the problem. He said he hadn’t heard of any issues with the HDMI connection, but he did suggest we try a video output reset. “That should be the first and foremost attempt at fixing the problem,” Seybold says. The reset—instructions are available on the PS3 troubleshooting page—requires that you turn off the PS3 with the manual switch on the back, turn it on and then hold the front power button down for about five to eight seconds until it beeps twice. Then you re-select the 1080p resolution when prompted. Thanks, Patrick, we tried your fix... but after a couple of rounds of Resistance, we were back to the blinking screen.

that sounds like the fix I had read initially on the AVS forum.. I guess it didn't have to do with audio after all.

I had one last question for anyone who can help. I didn't find this on the FAQ on the 1st page but does anyone know how the Service Net Extended Warranty is for newegg. I am just trying to see if I should add an extra warranty for this monitor

That sounds amazing :D! Can't wait to see the pics!

Yeah I am pretty sure that the 8800GTS probably will have trouble doing both the westy's...but I am going to try.

I am a noob so I don't know, I have the 8800gts and love it. Can't wait to go SLI. I don't know if my expectations were way to high cause I never been a PC gamer, but I thought it would be way better. But in its defense the PC version of Oblivion on it blows my 360 version out of the water, off the peer and into a trash can! :D

hehe.. when you go SLI grab a copy of Qarl's Texture Pack 3 mod for Obliv and get ready to drool. :)

Suggestion time for Westy owners.

I'm looking at moving into a fairly small apartment, and am looking to buy a 37" Westy and use it as both a Monitor and a TV and I'd like to mount the Monitor on a pivot so that I can pivot it between facing the Sofa/Chair, and facing the desk. (I'm including a link to a picture for a layout).

http://s167.photobucket.com/albums/u125/Zumino/?action=view&current=Desk.jpg

I'm not sure on the scale, but it looks like it'd require about 1.5ft to 2ft of Swivel and extend. The pivot will be attached to the computer desk at a stable point(or perhaps to the TV table below the TV when it's in "TV" mode)

Any suggestions on doing this? I'm kinda worried about the possible weight of the TV when it's extended off a an angle like that.

In my opinion you are going to have to get a heavy duty swing arm to hold it. Not to mention your desk better be pretty sturdy! The idea is cool but 43lbs is a lot of weight to have on something not strong enough. It all depends on the mount and the desk. How about looking into a swing arm you can mount into the stud that extends and pivots? Maybe something like this but be warned it is pricey! :D

Damn I can't wait to go SLI! Know I need to get some more gigs to pay for the next round of upgrades.

Yeah Duce, that was an earlier thought, but this is an apartment, and somehow I don't think they'd appreciate the idea of me cutting into the Studs to mount that kinda thing.

The way I'm thinking about this now is either the desk, or the TV stand, both of which are quite sturdy will be supporting the weight. I'll probably be the Desk for height purposes, but that's not quite 100% yet, and I've got a bit before I move in to decide how to set this up.

Easiest way is probably to just sit it on the desk and just turn it when you need it as the Tv...its not that hard to turn like a big tv...

Yea I understand where you are coming from. I also live in an apartment and said to hell with it. They always find away to eat your deposit, so here is a real reason! I wall mounted mine and wouldn't have it any other way. LOL :D!

Well, I mounted my old LCD TV in a place I was renting using:

http://www.omnimount.com/consumer/p...389a-4fea-a7d1-e0c0b305d01f&CurrentId=1.2.3.3

It swings out like you're looking for and did a pretty good job. It's by no means attractive to look at though (plain flat grey paint). I managed to caulk the holes back up and they provided me with some touch up paint and it looked as good as new ;) Nothin off my deposit.

I got mine used off of eBay fairly cheap if it looks like something you might use. Keep in mind that when it's fully extended that is exerts a large moment on the mount and might rip out of your desk if it's not sturdy enough.

The 37W1 Doesn't have a Tuner at all According to their site. The 1st Westys that are 1080p AND have a Tuner will be the New TX Line. There is no knowledge of a TX-37 though.

Woohoo! As of 4:52 AM today, the TV is on the truck for delivery!

It would have been here yesterday, except I got a coupon code for a free t-shirt from the site I bought it from, which I redeemed for a free chiefvalue.com shirt :p The TV shipped from NJ while the shirt came from CA; I live in Ohio. I got my order placed Thursday and finalized Friday morning (billing issues) and the TV got to Columbus late Friday. It sat just a few miles from me all weekend and all of Monday. It looks like UPS decided to hold it until my other package arrived, and then shipped them both at the same time.

No complaints though, $999.99 shipped and pretty fast shipping; great deal if you ask me :)

I'm so excited to hook this up; I'll post pics later today once I have everything up and running.

It doesn't say there's one, nor that there isn't. On Amazon it says, "built-in 181-channel NTSC tuner," but the PCMag review again says no tuner. I'm puzzled now... investigating...

It can't take in a tv signal on its own like. You can't hook up a cable wire to it. But it can select that many channels using the remote once you have a source connected to it.

Own a W1, and unless I'm blind, I'm pretty sure there's no cable hookup. Doesn't even come with HDMI.

But works well over DVI, which is all that really matters to me

Anyone have any comments on using the IKEA Galant desk with this monitor? Is it deep enough to have a far enough viewing distance? Will it hold the 48 lb weight of the monitor?

Plenty enough space, and its a very sturdy desk. I have a few galant desks down my basement that I still have to put together once I finish it and make it my computer/home theater area. I'm probably moving the westy down there this summer when its complete. :)

Mother of God...

...this is one hell of a monitor!

The UPS man dropped it off earlier today. I was walking out of the dorm with my friends to buy some coax cables for my HD tuner card when we saw the UPS truck pull around the back of the dorm. I watched the guy unload it and almost killed him when he turned the box on end on the dolly X-( All is well though; the display is perfect with NO DEAD PIXELS! Woot! And from what I can tell, I've got firmware 1.8. I've spent most of today connecting this and re-doing all my wires behind my desk; it was a forest back there.

So far everything computer related is spot-on; big and beautiful. The blacks are great and the colors are bright. The few games I played look great, and my 720p Casino Royale looks pretty good too. A kid down the hall has a PS3 we're going to try out later today; I'm considering buying one and I want to test it first.

I'm running the factory settings so far; the only change I've made is I turned down the backlight a notch because I sit about 3 feet from the screen and that was just too bright. Can anyone who uses their screen primarily as a computer monitor from 2 to 4 feet recommend some settings, or is the factory setup fine?

I do have one problem though; my PS2 looks terrible on this screen. Everything has an off-green tint. I'm using a MadCatz component cable with PS2/3, Xbox, and Xbox360 connectors. I've heard of people having problems with cables like this while connected to multiple consoles, but I've tried using this cable on my 42" Samsung plasma back home and it worked fine. I've also tried connecting it to both YPbPr inputs and I get the same problem. Has anyone else had problems using their PS2 on this screen?

I'll post pics of my setup later today once my friend gets back and I can steal his camera for a bit. I'll also post pics of the green PS2 problem.
