OK, I just got my brand new fancy 74 GB Raptor, and hook the SATA data cable up to the Serial ATA 1 port on my Asus p4c800-e deluxe, and I hook up the legacy power cable to it, leaving the SATA power cable open (which it says is ok). And... it won't detect the drive, while it's trying to the drive makes a loud repetetive clicking sound, but it wont detect it..... what's going on? should I try using the SATA power cable instead? Should I try to change the jumper or something? DO I have to install drivers or something?

make sure you have sata enabled in your bios, for every setting regarding sata/hdd.

Are you doing a fresh install of windows? Will this be your boot drive?

I just got my 36gb raptor up and running after some driver hassle for the sata controller... but you have the ICH5R southbridge with native sata support. So it is probably less hassle.

where in my BIOS do I enable SATA? Whats up with that promise controller in my BIOS? If I enable it I have ewither the option of it supporting RAID or IDE, but neither of the 2 resolve the problem......... Perhaps a BIOS flash is in order?

I have never had the pleasure of browsing through a P4C800's bios, so i couldn't tell ya.

I will do some research and see what I can find.

Do you have it hooked up to the Promise Sata ports or the Intel sata ports? If on promise, hook it up to the intel set and report back.

Edit: The menus you need are most likely under Advanced, Chipset.... or Advanced, Onboard Devices Configuration.

I would disable the promise sata controller and use the ICH5R intel set.

Also!!!

Are you trying to add this as storage to an existing windows install? Or are you trying to install windows onto the raptor as a boot drive?

i'm trying to install windows onto the raptor as the boot drive, it's going to be the only drive...

You're probably going to need to put the SATA drivers on a disk and load them during Windows setup, then.

repetitive clicking is not a good hard drive sound even if you get it working correctly. i think i'd send it back and ask for another.

ya, whenever it's trying to scan the drive or whatever... the drive clicks... But I got past the point where it says I dont have a hard disk.. now when it says "setup is loading windows" It goes to a blue screen and gives me an error message saying "partmgr.sys" and "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA", so I don't know what's going on... should I just RMA the drive?

I have had 2 Raptors fail in the last 90 days. BOTH of them had that loud click!!!!
One was no good right out of the box, and one lasted 2 months.
I am now back to my Seagate 7200.7 drives and dont see me using the Raptors again anytime soon....

Hopefully the one I put in yesterday stays alive longer than that...

I didn't really notice the part about the clicking...

Did you try to put it on the other set of sata controllers though?

yes, I tried both and both yielded the same result, I'll RMA it tomorrow...

shitty... :(

You may want to get a molex to sata power cable adaptor just for the hell of it...

Or make sure that the only thing on the molex connector's power chain is the sata drive.
