I got my mobo/cpu/ram today, put it all together, hooked everything up, turn it on, go into the bios and it powers off. I say wtf and power on again, and it powers back off. Is this my PSU not putting out enough juice? I have 1 dvd-rom, 36GB raptor, 1 sata and 1 pata HD, 7600gt and an x-fi. Monarch is being slow in processing my order for a new PSU, so I was hoping I could run the new system on my Antec truepower 430.

To test power supply problem: remove every component that isn't required to boot.

Sounds more like a bad mobo or incompatible RAM. What brand memory are you using? You can try removing the stick in the highest # bank and see if it helps you get past POST.

running mine with 420W doubt its the power supply.

pull the x-fi out have seen issues with that sensitive to what slot its plugged in, but anyway fire it up with just the boot drive and video connected, disconnect everything else

Sounds like it could be the CPU overheating. Make sure you don't have something between the HSF and the CPU. It's actually pretty common to leave on the "protective covers" on the HSF. Hell... I've done it a few times my self.

Alright, so I have one HD, and the video card in it, it will post, and it started to load windows, but it just shut off. I'm gonna go out and see if I can find an adapter that converts my psu connector to the 24 pin, since my antec has the 20 pin. BTW I have tried two different types of ram, and they both do the same thing. I thought it was my ballistix at first since it requires 2.2V.

Also, you may be partially right about the CPU, I'm noticing some ERRATIC fan behaviour. Scared the fuck out of me when I powered it up, and it took a few seconds for the fan to start. Also, it starts, then stops for a few seconds, and then starts again. BTw, whats with the shitty retention on the stock HSF? Gave me a little trouble getting it on there.

That's normal. The fan speed is controlled by bios and WILL barely spin half the time since Conroe runs VERY cool. You could really run the CPU without a fan, only a heat sink, and have NO issues. The problem that you are describing sounds exactly like an overheating issue. Though I noticed that you are using a 20 pin P/S. I'm betting that's your problem. The extra pins are used for the CPU IIRC and if the CPU isn't getting enough juice, it can shutdown. Also... what other power connectors are you hooking up to the board?

To the board? ATX 4 Pin and the 20 pin. I looked around couldn't find an adapter, you know if compusa might have them or something? Cause otherwise I can just wait for my new psu gets here, if monarch ever processes it. EDIT: BAH compusa DOES have them, but the closest one is 20 MILES......... I do not know of any of pc stores around here, there was a computer renaissance, but I think they went out of business.

Thanks for your help! I decided to make sure I put the heatsink on properly for the third time, and that fixed it. Also there is a minor issue with the way the cpu fan wire is wrapped around the heatsink, it was partially blocking the fan. but it seems Poncho was right, and it was the heatsink, thanks :D

EDIT: It seems as I'm still having contact issues, according to the bios I'm at 53-60c, but my heatsink is cool to the touch, I fucking hate the way this thing mounts.

Conroe has a totally different way, compared to past CPUs, of measuring the temperature. It's not abmormal to see "hot" temps on these CPUs since the new way measures the temp from 3 places on the die, whereas older methods would take the temp from outside the die where it's much cooler. Let the bios do it's thing with the fan. If the speed on the fan is low and the heat sink is cool to the touch then there are NO issues with your temps. People are making a WAY bigger deal out of these temps than they should IMHO. In your case the bigger issue is the P/S. You are basically missing 8 total 12volt connections by using that 20 pin and the 4 pin ATX.

The speed on the fan is around 1700, and I'm idling at about 57-60c I've checked the heatsink numerous times, and it doesn't lower the temps any.

Edit: oh wow, I downloaded speedfan and it's reporting totally different temps. I'm looking at 45c idle.. btw is the fan supposed to suck or blow?
