Got a Rivatuner Question

Yep. Whatever the last card you had selected will be the OC that applies. I think theres a way but I haven't test it yet as I haven't rebooted in a while. You can set custom OC profiles for each card with both clocks and fan speeds then use "launcher" to generate a startup icon for the app. I've used this method to run my clocks and fan up and down when starting different games and it worked well. I don't know how it'd work with the GPU client though considering you use additional startup parameters on the command line to start the client. RT WILL run in the background using that method though.

I really haven't had the need to do that yet as I rarely reboot and fortunately have very stable power. But I may mess around with it one day just to see if it works.

Interesting, I'll have to try this later on. When I've changed the clocks with the GPU client running I've found it speeds up / slows down to match the changes you make.


 
I got my AS5 today. So far the temps are 1 degree higher than with the white paste. I remember AS5 having to "cure" before the best temps hit so I'll be patient for now. I hope I put enough on it. I just put a dot the size of a large pea onto the core and spread it evenly with my finger like I'm used to.
 
I was hoping you wouldn't say that, but I guess I'll take it off once I get done watching my movie.
 
Apply sparingly. You want full coverage but since the HSF is probably polished and the chip itself is very flat, you can do with a thin application. I'm seeing many users take a razor to apply the compound and use such a small amount that you could almost see through it. If both surfaces are already very smooth and level, you can get away with a very small amount and it will transfer heat more efficiently. All the paste does is fill in gaps that might otherwise trap air between the surfaces, but if there isn't any gaps forming because the surfaces are making full contact, then a very small amount will suffice.

It looks fine to me. I'm guessing it will drop once the AS5 "cures" like it's supposed to. I also remembered that I fixed something though. It might technically be lower, because I noticed that for some reason my regular CPU client was fighting with the GPU client for CPU time. I set the affinity on each and they both leveled off at 50% like they are supposed to be. That might be what caused the increase in heat because it's working harder.
 
Up to 200 hours on a CPU, not sure about GPU.


Would probably be similar BUT tends to cure best with temperature cycling. Non-stop meat burning heat while folding 7x24 may NEVER allow it to "cure" fully. I'd think for this kind of application MX would be a better choice.

Not trying to be an ass but #1 I didn't buy MX. #2 From the review I'm reading MX has a 200 hour curing time as well. It's already dropped 1 degree so I think it just needs to cure.
 
I would still suggest pausing the WU and shutting down the machine for 10-15 minutes every 6-8 hours. Everything I've read says that AS5 requires the thermal change for the curing to happen. It should be noted though that I do not use AS5. I use the Zalman paint on ("low" heat stuff) and the IC 7 Diamond ("high" heat stuff).

 
I had some IC 7 Diamond compound. The shit dried out even though I NEVER opened the tube. That is what I wanted to use on my card. But unless they replace my dried up tube, I'm never buying it again.

Nope... you're right, my bad.. don't know which "compound" I was thinking and reading about about but the 200 hrs for MX is correct. No ass taken. ;)


 
It has now dropped another degree, so AS5 is working BETTER than the white paste now. I fixed my affinity issue so it is making a few more PPD on the GPU core and also made it make MORE heat. Even with that and removing my under clocking to keep from frying my GPU it's still only hitting 66C full load. That is the same it got before with the white paste with the affinity issue and under clocking. AS5 is for sure working better. I have my shaders at 1550mhz because I was getting an occasional lock up at 1575mhz. I'm betting that lapping would help loads on this GPU because if you look at my contact pic, you can see that there is a LOT more compound in the center than the edges. The heat spreader is not flat at all. But I don't really think it would be worth the effort to lap it. I'd doubt I'd get many more MHZ out of the shaders. I'd bet better off buying another video card! :)

I still would like to try the MX compound though, because I read many good things here and on review sites. It's supposed to provide anywhere from 1-3 degrees better performance and it's also easier to apply.

Yeah, I agree with the "AS5 is still a great compound " and like many people I've used it for quite some time . I've also used it on all my HS's (CPU, GPU, NB, SB, etc), any HS that doesn't require an adhesive type heat compound (like static memory HS's on GPU's)

Always being curious about improvements in the thermal compound arena (I'm kinda' temp anal) I ordered and just recieved a couple of 4g tubes of the MX-2 THC (I get my AS5 in the 12g tube) and I'm curious to see if and how much it keeps my chips cooler than AS5. (I wanted to try the diamond stuff also, I just forgot) I've tried almost every THC out there and IMHO nothing beats good ole' AS5. ;) I tried the Zalman "paint on" stuff (easy to apply and nice for HS's on NB's, etc, just too thin in my book :confused:), the Shin Etsu X23-7783D and I'm gonna' try the IC Diamond stuff in either the 7 caret or 24 caret THC eventually. (that's if I remember, D'oh :rolleyes:)

To put it all in a "nut shell" I'll always use AS5 on my cat because she likes the taste :p

Near as I can tell the only difference between the IC 7 and IC 24 is the size of the container. The 7 caret is 1.5 grams, the 24 caret is 4.8 grams. IC's website only talks about the 7 caret though.
