I just OC until I experience problems with the client like EUEs, then I drop down the OC incrementally until the WUs complete without issues.Thanks for the replies. Next question is how do I check and make sure I haven't gone too far. I'm at 1500mhz right now and my games still play fine with no obvious artifacts of any kind.
That would be recommended for folding 24/7 especially if you OC.I also have the fan locked at 100% on it for extra cooling. My current GPU temp is 63C, I hope that is ok.
GPU folding looks to be the wave of the future until a CPU manufacturer releases a totally new architecture, or multiplies the cores like mad (won't happen in near future).How do I know when I get an EUE? I had the fan on 100% before I ever did the GPU folding because I like to keep my card cool. This thing is chewing up blocks like mad, I wish my CPU was as fast.
All my cases are run open, to minimize temperature buildup within the case. It allows for higher CPU and GPU OC.Thanks for the input mang!! I'm up to 1600mhz shaders, and so far so good. It's a stock cooler but I have a case with a 120mm input fan, 120mm output fan, and a 620watt Corsair HX power supply with a 120mm fan in it. I'm hoping that will help keep things cool enough for it.
So, that is your effective limit until you can improve the cooling or reduce ambient temps. BTW, did you remove the OEM HSF and use high quality thermal compound over the chips? If not, that could help reduce temperature by a couple of degrees. Not much but helps on the warmer days. I use AS5 but there's better compounds available.I broke it, had to back down from 1600mhz :-( It gave some weird error like GPU reported a -1. It looks like 1575mhz is going to be the sweet spot for it. So far so good.
If you do remove the OEM HSF, just be careful. If there are thermal pads you will have to remove them to use a compound, BUT only if removing the pads does not cause a big gap between the HSF and the chips. On my cards, the pads over the memory chips should not be removed with the stock cooler because the gap would be too great to be adequately filled by a thermal compound, and I only used it on the GPU itself.No I haven't ever removed the stock cooler. That's not a bad idea! The case NEVER stays on my PC for long, it's off right now!




Honestly, for the bit of extra frequency headroom you will obtain with a $50 HSF, you might as well invest another $50 and get a second video card. A second card will get you 5000 additional PPD, but an HSF will net you what? 100-200PPD extra? Even if it's more than that you're still far better off setting aside the $50 and waiting until you have a little more to purchase the second card. There are crazy deals available now. I didn't bother getting aftermarket coolers because they're so expensive and I don't even game, so my cards see no other use besides folding and displaying. Invest where you will see the greatest gains.The thing that kills me is that no one makes an aftermarket cooler for the card that isn't around 50 bucks after shipping. I'd like to put one on it, but I don't have unlimited funds like some of you guys seem to have.

Very sound advice for ALL folding purchases but especially relevant for the GPU purchases. Another good idea for the GPU purchases (at least on the Nvidia side) is if 2 cards are close in price and one has a lifetime warranty vs a 1 year (like some of the MSI cards) get the longer warranty. I think we're putting these GPUs to the test on 7x24 duty...

Yes and I expect a few dead GPU (and potential free upgrades)

I believe that is within the normal range for that specific card. Check with the list nomad8u linked above to see how your card compares.I have an 8800 GTS 640meg. That was with everything at stock. I had to adjust rivatuner again so it will probably go up.

I've got FAHmon setup completely now. It's monitoring all of my computers through the network. I'm generating almost 5000PPD between my main rig with the 8800GTS and its other core running a regular client, my laptop running 2 clients for both cores, and my mom's PC running a client. FAHmon is the shiz! Makes it easy to check on things.

I have ticked the boxes for setting the clocks at boot but one of them always clocks back to stock speeds. It's not a problem now that the GTS is at stock speeds I was just curious.
