Does the latest version of Rivatuner actually work to overclock the shaders? I was wondering so that I could get a few more PPD out of my rig. It already seems pretty fast as it chews through the blocks like mad on my 8800 GTS 640meg.

What I've done within RivaTuner is to setup 2 OC Profiles. One OC is for gaming and OC's core/memory and shaders. One OC is specifically for folding. In that profile, I have taken DOWN the core/memory (not needed for GPU2 client) and bumped up the shaders. By reducing the core/memory (not much, but some) I keep the heat output about the same (or maybe just a little higher) than stock.

Thanks for the replies. Next question is how do I check and make sure I haven't gone too far. I'm at 1500mhz right now and my games still play fine with no obvious artifacts of any kind.

I also have the fan locked at 100% on it for extra cooling. My current GPU temp is 63C, I hope that is ok.

Also just as a statement, I got my laptop folding as well now. The CPU hits about 65C but it gets hotter than that when I play games on it. It's a AMD 1.8g Dual Core

I just OC until I experience problems with the client like EUEs, then I drop down the OC incrementally until the WUs complete without issues.

That would be recommended for folding 24/7 especially if you OC.
 
How do I know when I get an EUE? I had the fan on 100% before I ever did the GPU folding because I like to keep my card cool. This thing is chewing up blocks like mad, I wish my CPU was as fast.

GPU folding looks to be the wave of the future until a CPU manufacturer releases a totally new architecture, or multiplies the cores like mad (won't happen in near future).

As far as knowing how far to OC, well as soon as you notice error messages like 'unstable machine' or anything that forces the client to stop processing before a WU completes, it's time to reduce the OC. My 8800GT cards are all running shaders @1746MHz. Many people consider that low, but my cards are only single-slot and have OEM HSFs. I simply can't go higher unless I get aftermarket cooling.

All my cases are run open, to minimize temperature buildup within the case. It allows for higher CPU and GPU OC.

So, that is your effective limit until you can improve the cooling or reduce ambient temps. BTW, did you remove the OEM HSF and use high quality thermal compound over the chips? If not, that could help reduce temperature by a couple of degrees. Not much but helps on the warmer days. I use AS5 but there's better compounds available.
 
No I haven't ever removed the stock cooler. That's not a bad idea! The case NEVER stays on my PC for long, it's off right now!

If you do remove the OEM HSF, just be careful. If there are thermal pads you will have to remove them to use a compound, BUT only if removing the pads does not cause a big gap between the HSF and the chips. On my cards, the pads over the memory chips should not be removed with the stock cooler because the gap would be too great to be adequately filled by a thermal compound, and I only used it on the GPU itself.
 
I've had a computer since I was 5. I know my nick says noobie next to it, but trust me I know what I'm doing. I built every PC I've had from the ground up since I was 12 years old, and I'm 26. I know all about the gaps and such. Not trying to be mean, just letting you know. I'm glad that you cared enough to make sure I didn't kill my very expensive video card. The damn thing was $279 when I bought it.
 
Talk about crappy, I just went through hell just to find my old tube of regular white compound. My tube of 7 carat diamond compound dried COMPLETELY out. It was ROCK hard. I had to find the white compound just to get it back together so I could use it. Temps are now HIGHER than the stock grey compound that was on it. I guess eVGA did something right. White paste sucks! Going to order some AS5 to go in place of this crap. Temps are hitting 66-68C now instead of 62-64C!! AHHH!
 
Order Arctic Cooling MX-2. It's a better product for a similar price recommended by folders on this forum. The diamond compounds are also good but a bit on the pricey side. AS5 is still good as well.
 
+1 for the MX-2. I will be using that on all future builds. It's only a dollar more than AS-5 and from what I have read, it is worth it.

 
I had to end up underclocking the core and memory, the card actually hit 70C and it caused the GPU folder to do a temperature error and stop folding. I can't wait until my AS5 gets here, I found a 10% off coupon for FrozenCPU so I got the 12 gram (large) container for 21.49 shipped. Can't beat that with a stick if you ask me.
 
AS5 is conductive and you will not want to use that on any memory chips... the GPU is ok but stay away from putting that on the memory.

Thus the reason people recommend MX-2 its non conductive and can be used on memory, GPU, etc... all 9, soon to be 12 quads have MX-2 used along with their lapped TRUE-120's :)

 
For memory, reuse the thermal pads since they hardly need cooling. The core otoh will need a good contact and I guess we all learned that the white shit is useless. I watercool 2 of my GPU and I use MX-2 for the core and memory sticks when I use a full cover.

I just ordered a new tube since the other tube was empty last week already after just 6 months of use :eek:

 
I keep a big stock of mx-2 I have 4 tubes currently.. I've used 5-6 in building and rebuilding my various computers over hte last year. And Xil I'm the same way with my WC set. Full block and used MX-2 on both GPU, and Memory... card never gets over 52c... and that is only with medium flow fans... I may switch to high flow when I add my 3rd gpu in shortly :)

 
The thing that kills me is that no one makes an aftermarket cooler for the card that isn't around 50 bucks after shipping. I'd like to put one on it, but I don't have unlimited funds like some of you guys seem to have.

Honestly, for the bit of extra frequency headroom you will obtain with a $50 HSF, you might as well invest another $50 and get a second video card. A second card will get you 5000 additional PPD, but an HSF will net you what? 100-200PPD extra? Even if it's more than that you're still far better off setting aside the $50 and waiting until you have a little more to purchase the second card. There are crazy deals available now. I didn't bother getting aftermarket coolers because they're so expensive and I don't even game, so my cards see no other use besides folding and displaying. Invest where you will see the greatest gains.

That's in the general range depending on what WU and where your shaders are currently at. Keep yourself an updated copy of this spreadsheet to see where your card should fall. Very good resource.

I have an 8800 GTS 640meg. That was with everything at stock. I had to adjust rivatuner again so it will probably go up.

I believe that is within the normal range for that specific card. Check with the list nomad8u linked above to see how your card compares.
 
Sound about right at stock speed. I get about 4400 ppd with the shaders clocked at 1700 Mhz (a bit hard in general for this card, mine have a golden core A3).

 
I've got FAHmon setup completely now. It's monitoring all of my computers through the network. I'm generating almost 5000PPD between my main rig with the 8800GTS and its other core running a regular client, my laptop running 2 clients for both cores, and my mom's PC running a client. FAHmon is the shiz! Makes it easy to check on things.

I'm already addicted to computers! And I've been into distributed computing for MUCH longer than you think. I was around in the RC5 days and when Seti@Home was a new thing with my dual processor Celeron 550mhz (366 o/c of course). My friends were all the envy on it because I'd do 2 blocks for every one they did, and they hated it. I just got into folding because of the ads on the [H] homepage. And considering it helps us understand protein folding better and allows for possible cures to cancer and AIDS, I'm all for it. Think about how much it would cost to make a super computer with as much processing power as the Folding [H]orde alone has much less the ENTIRE network of folders.
 
Woot, glad to know a fellow former RC5 user. I also started with RC5 as well with a nice work farm of 10 Optiplex GX1 stacked.

I have the same card and saw 3700-3800 PPD at stock clocks, I only got to push the shaders as high as 1350MHz before I got my 9800GTX and now the GTS only runs at around 2500 PPD. I've decided to clock it back to stock so long as it's producing these crippled PPD. :(

EDIT: I've just thought, is there a way to ensure Rivatuner starts two cards at OC'd speeds on boot? I have ticked the boxes for setting the clocks at boot but one of them always clocks back to stock speeds. It's not a problem now that the GTS is at stock speeds I was just curious.

I've tried to get it to do that but it seems to 'forget' to OC one card. Must be a bug.
 
I'm hoping that I get my AS5 tomorrow. On a better note my 640gig WD 7200RPM drive IS coming tomorrow!!! Fun times! Can't wait to see how fast it is.

Yep. Whatever the last card you had selected will be the OC that applies. I think theres a way but I haven't test it yet as I haven't rebooted in a while. You can set custom OC profiles for each card with both clocks and fan speeds then use "launcher" to generate a startup icon for the app. I've used this method to run my clocks and fan up and down when starting different games and it worked well. I don't know how it'd work with the GPU client though considering you use additional startup parameters on the command line to start the client. RT WILL run in the background using that method though.

I really haven't had the need to do that yet as I rarely reboot and fortunately have very stable power. But I may mess around with it one day just to see if it works.
