So I just purchased a system off of Best Buy Private auction. Gateway GT5432. In a nutshell, AMD 5000+, 2GB CORSAIR DDR800, 320GB SATA HD, DVDRW ect. The motherboard supports raid and the BIOS is actually pretty deep and provides much of the options a non-retail board would. I payed 250 bucks for the unit which I think is a steal. Brand new in box, just discontinued. My question...

What should I do when it comes to an OS? XP SP3? Go to 64 bit Vista? Stay with the 32-bit Home Premium it came with? I really want to tweak out the unit and get the most performance out of it as possible. I was even thinking about dual booting with Ubuntu 8.04. I plan to do some light gaming on it and of course everyday internet/email tasks. Also plenty of torrent downloading of movies and music....any ideas?

I wouldnt go x64 unless you were to get 4gb or more of ram. Id say stay with vista home premium.

thats an awesome deal! with a big hd like that, i would go with a triple boot. unless you need bitlocker encryption dont bother with getting vista ultimate. also 64 bit would not be usefull unless you plan on getting 2 more gb of ram. with easy bcd you can have all of the options on one screen when it boots up and you can also have any of them as the default os. i have this kind of setup and i love it.

Just use the OS that comes with it
Most of the computer stuff that comes from the BB auctions has been wiped clean and without restore discs. I'm guessing thats the case here since he's asking.

+1 for xp sp3

There's no reason not to stick with the OS that came with it. If you plan to upgrade to 4 GB of memory sometime, I wouldn't hesitate to go to x64.
