Reuters is reporting that an Indian antitrust ruling that found Google guilty of search bias has Alphabet scared. In February the Competition Commission of India slapped Google with a fine for $20 million for abusing it's position in online web search. According to a document reviewed by Reuters, Google is claiming that "without appellate scrutiny would cause Google irreparable reputational loss" while seeking a stay on the ruling.

Aww. Poor Google. I feel bad.. Don't you feel bad? Fine should have been $20 billion and a kick in the junk for search bias.

"If Google is restricted from entering into certain types of contracts while the appellate review is conducted, Google will be irreparably harmed," the company said in the plea, without elaborating.

Duck duck go is actually pretty decent for anybody interested in a google alternative. I've been using it for a year or so and only rarely do I double check if google has a different result when I can't find something.

That's legalese for "if Google has to obey the law while being charged for breaking it, that will hurt our profits"

If I can't find it with DDG, it wasn't worth finding. Why would I want google to know where my car keys are...

Google doesn't give you what you're looking for but what they think you need. One of their own said as much. I'd tell you who, but my search for the exact quote didn't turn up what I was looking for. I kid you not.

Since it's India, all Google has to do is grease a few palms and this will all go away.

divert 5% of revenue, and make a joint venture with a local firm. A few token seats for local managers, a few politicians on an 'advisory board' , a few 'consultancy offices' in select electorates ....

than ta da! , all regulatory problems is solved. (plus you pay less tax too...)

geez, stop being so greedy for once, Google

You guys can use your "alternative" search engines but none will be as good for technical searches as Google is today. It's not search bias its good search results.

My top three suggestions for "Mark Zuckerberg is a" were Android, Weasel, and Woman.

That's not going to be racist, accusatory, or conspiraratory enough to satisfy the alt-right's appetite for tight, focused bias. It is interesting to see what people search for, though.

And by "good search results" , you mean what you on the fascist left define as what is good and "need" to know. Google's leftist bias is beyond debate and their search algorithms constantly reflect that, but you don't really care about the truth. Your side makes a living of falsifying crimes, elections, and scientific data to skew results to your agenda.

Shocker...another Lily White poindexter progressive who lives around 99% white people screams racism and if that doesn't work blames sneaky Russian boogeymen. But totally not a conspiracy.

I seriously doubt that Google actually did anything wrong in India. Google is just an easy target for foreign countries looking for an easy cash grab. Easy money and easy votes from their gullible voters, what more could the politicians in India want?

So, now we know what each engine considers most relevant for autocomplete based on previous searches. Wow! *YAWN*

Congrats on being the first person I've blocked in 12 years of forum browsing. You had to turn this political. I'm talking about technical articles that show no bias in political agenda but help me to troubleshoot user problems with computers.

if you read his post history.. Yes

Anyways, i have never really cared about how google displays search results. One can easily see "preferred" results at the top, then more pertinent ones that follow. Sometimes, what im really looking for will be.. *GASP* on the 2nd page

    hahahaha

I find using Google with no ad blocker to be the most telling thing of all, Duck Duck Go has some big issues for me, but I use it because three pages advertising in place of search results from Google on a mobile device defines Google.

The fine should have been 20 billion?

Sure, lets ignore the bias that other countries are giving toward Google only because of their deep pockets. You really think this is ok? And you do realize this is an American company employing hundreds of thousands of people in the US alone. All these companies play by the rules. It's Googles service, their pockets, their money. If you people hate Google then go use Yahoo or Ping for your web searches.

I really don't get it. It's a free service. No one is forced to use it.

I really wish Google would come up with a fast simple EULA / Opt in for these whiny fcking countries and people reminding them that basically are using a free service and can always go elsewhere.

While Google is a private company and is free to do as it pleases others, including the country of India, are upset at Google for it's practices including political biases. The issue at hand is "political" and the poster you object to is only pointing out the anger Google is generating. It would behoove Google and other California based tech companies to rid their ranks of radical SJW's and make their platforms politically neutral or suffer the consequences.

I have found DuckDuckGo and/or Bing more than adequate for troubleshooting technical problems for my clients in place of Google.

This is the type of critical feedback response I expect. Thank you for your cool and calm response.

The main reason I was calling the poster out was because they accused me of being a fascist something I abhor. I agree that Google itself needs to be a bit more neutral but so far my news feed seems to be an equal share of Huffpost and Fox news with a mix of BBC and pointed topics, so there it is rather balanced. As far as search results go I never get any results that seem to be leading me to one side or the other only results that lead me to answers.
