First Hangouts was going away, then it wasn't, and now it looks like Google is about to make changes that are certain to piss off a certain number of people again. On June 26th Google Talk and its Gchat will be shut down for good. For those who haven't already adopted Hangouts voluntarily, Talk will be automatically rolled into Hangouts at that time. SMS compatibility will also be removed from Hangouts on May 22nd. Sometimes you just have to kill your darlings, I guess.

To me this Hangouts vs. Talk changeover seems pretty moot as they appear to have equivalent functionality. I just wonder what will happen to my old phone number I parked in Talk a while back. I hope it will be transferred over to Hangouts.

While we’re sure to hear more about this new strategy at Google I/O, it looks like Android Messages is the new app to rule them all: “We’re focused on making Android Messages the primary place to access SMS and are working with carriers and device manufacturers to include Android Messages natively in Android devices. Over time, we’re working with partners to upgrade SMS to RCS—the next standard in carrier messaging that will bring features like read receipts, group chat, hi-res photo sharing and more.”
 
So i cant send sms's from my desktop using google voice anymore, thank google...

Its sooooo much easier to type and send jpegs (not pics taken with the phone) using my phone...
 
kind of sucks... voice was great for a lot things you didn't want to use your normal phone number for or ya know get up from the computer to text someone.

I don't think they're getting rid of Google Voice? This is Google Talk and Google Chat.
 
Google is such a clusterfuck when it comes to software, rather than making one app that does everything they split each function into a separate app, lets not get started on android and its 6 month wait to get updates on non pixel phones.

Thats not google or the device manufacturers its the phone companys each one has a custom firmware.

And if they're not forced to, they tend not to update firmware very often. Part of that is to get you upgrade, which generally locks you into their service for a couple of years.

If this doesn't affect google voice, I don't really care. I don't use that app much, but it's nice to have in some cases.

Nothing wrong with an extra layer of safety between you and potentially crazy pussy.

The firmware differences are minimal at best, att has these apps, verizon has these apps and so forth. All the carriers apps should be downloadable through the play store.
The bloatware samsung/lg/motorola add should be a separate theme/app on top of the main os which google should update. Nougat penetration is like like 2% after 7 months, that's just pathetic.
 
This is rather frustrating. From one perspective, Google should, if they're going to focus on Hangouts - that should be their primary chat ecosystem; compatible with EVERYTHING else, from Google Voice numbers etc. However, with their constant "ADHD" when it comes to various projects, as evidenced by their new separate Allo and Duo clients, they can't even get behind making one , full featured client for one sort of task and instead throw together a bunch of them each with a particular gimmick.

The other thing that always frustrated me about Google Talk was that at one point, way back when, before Hangouts, GTalk was actually just Google's XMPP client and associated server, which for the time supported many of XMPP/Jabber functionality and like all other XMPP servers are even today, was fully federated letting you talk to others on non-google servers too. You could use any XMPP client you chose, and/or use your Google account to connect through their XMPP server if you wished. Later, they changed Google Talk and moved towards Hangouts, making it fully proprietary instead of the open standard of XMPP. They could have a large role in the unification of XMPP taking its place as a popular messaging protocol if they had ab it more commitment and didn't change to proprietary nonsense so early. Google has a habit of this at times (just like with Android) they start out with something that is at least in part open source/spec (even if they are, on the server side, monitoring everything for ads and whatnot), but later on they start moving towards the proprietary instead for what seems to be very little good reason.
 
Great. Now all the iPhone users that send broken mms messages to Android users can receive broken Google mms messages back.

Let's be honest, the Hangouts SMS support was spotty.

They seem to want to make an iMessage like service (makes sense, can filter a lot of user data that way), yet don't want to at the same time.

I remember reading something about this. Apparently google just lets their employees do whatever the fuck they want and make half finished software then figure out later if they want to use it or not. I forget how it went.

Never use hangouts, I do use hangouts Dial that lets me automatically use any open wifi for all my out going calls. Can't delete Hangouts without losing Hangouts Dial.

Close, it depends on which governmental agency is funding it. For legal reasons, government agencies cannot use the same program, they have to create a new even if there is a pre-existing program already in place.
 
I'm kind of assuming this will break their Jabber compatibility? Like Adium and stuff? I can never tell with Google.
 
You can use the Google Voice app instead of Hangouts. They took all of the features from Hangouts and copied them into Google Voice about 3 months ago. My only complaint is, I don't think you can switch between two google voice numbers like you could with two email accounts in hangouts.

Edit: It appears that they are only removing carrier SMS from Hangouts. Their faq says you will still be able to send/receive google voice SMS within Hangouts.

I use Hangouts for SMS & IM, so this will be quite annoying having to use 2 different apps instead of one. :mad:

Pretty sure it's Talk not Voice. Talk is only available from weird areas now.


Talk was a service which Hangouts kind of took over. Hangouts is a dumb assed name but has much of the same functionality. I think the only thing that's missing is the old AOL Instant Messenger tie in.

Can you make calls using data only for free now? It's been years since I've used the GV app, but last I did you needed a 3rd party app to make calls using data. Then that was shut down by Google, and enter Hangouts.
 
I am a bit pissed about this change, been using Google Voice/Hangouts for many many years now for SMS purposes and this really tosses a big wrench into things for me and my wife now as we'll have to go looking for another solution. One app that handles all the conversations/SMS we've been doing for years will now probably end up requiring multiple apps to do the same thing, stupid stupid just fucking stupid period.

Change for the sake of change is never a good thing, dammit. :(
 
This is why I stopped using Google services. They're so indecisive it's mind-boggling. And instead of fixing one app they create multiple apps that should have all been rolled into Hangouts to begin with. Their services are anything but streamlined and it's only getting worse. They need to get it together.

Funny yes, but a bit exaggerated.

It's not as if you don't get a notification whenever someone contacts you on their service of choice, and then you just reply to that notification.

That, and 100% of everyone has SMS.

And if you really don't want to keep track, you can always use a universal chat client like Pidgin, and just add all of your friends in that.

Personally, I use Whatsapp for my Brazilian Fiance and her mother, SMS for everyone local, and the occasional Facebook messenger chat from people I haven't spoken to in decades who don't have my phone number. Not too tricky to keep track of IMHO.

I sure hope Google voice goes away. The quality is fucking terrible. I have to do technical interviews a lot and the amount of asshats wanting to do a phone interview using that shitty service is astounding

Amen. Holy fucking shit, Google. Make up your damn minds for once. First, you tried to take over the world with G+, literally forcing people to use a service they didn't want. Next, you try everything in the world to get me to send SMS through Hangouts (when all I use is Textra). Now you are probably going to try just as fervently to get me to use Messages (which is probably the most inconspicuous, easy to forget/confuse name ever).

Now everyone with a factory-image phone is going to have Samsung/LG/whatever "Messenger", Facebook "Messenger", and Google "Messaging".... which of course will not be prefaced by anything. It'll just be 15 "message" type apps in your app drawer, confusing the shit out of non-power users.
