Google claims that its new new alternative DNS resolver will speed up web browsing and make things more secure. Hit the link above if you are interested in trying it out*.

The average Internet user ends up performing hundreds of DNS lookups each day, and some complex pages require multiple DNS lookups before they start loading. This can slow down the browsing experience. Our research has shown that speed matters to Internet users, so over the past several months our engineers have been working to make improvements to our public DNS resolver to make users' web-surfing experiences faster, safer and more reliable. You can read about the specific technical improvements we've made in our product documentation and get installation instructions from our product website.

(*not recommended for people with fears of Google world domination or conspiracy theorists.)

I'll try it out. I browse around alot so I'll notice right away if these are slower then OpenDNS.

In before the anti-Google tin-hat wearers arrive.

What do you get when the URL doesn't resolve? Is this a chance for adverts attached to a search page? Cunning cash cow. :)

I for one welcome better DNS lookup from our tube overlord.

damn, i just changed my home to use google dns and now i cant connect back home.

their dns doesnt seem to be working correctly :/

might had to reset cable modem or something but now i cant remote back to my comp

I've been using OpenDNS for years with very positive results. Is this currently offering any advantages over what OpenDNS offers?

From my quick read I don't think so. I don't think you can setup your own white/blacklists, for example.

Google is evil. If you don't think this will be used for ad targeting you're a moron.

google is not evil. theyve never hid that they make ads from anyone.

their products have always been great and really improved the way i use the internet. but they arent open source, theyre a private company with employees that need to pay rent, eat, health insurance etc...

so if they keep providing kick ass products, then im happy to help them make money. especially when i consider that 90% of the stuff of theirs i use, costs me nothing (not counting my droid but i pay that bill to verizon =p).

nice angry, angsty internet tough guy quote though, i was almost afraid until i realized you arent steve. him, id be afraid of. that guys gigantic

Sounds a lot like chest thumping and opinions. Look in the third point - he called Google a liar right off th ebat. Does google redirect you to ads?

they just started the dns servers... no doubt in my mind they wont start that practice sooner or later.

its actually a good quote-
"Google claims that this service is better because it has no ads or redirection. But you have to remember they are also the largest advertising and redirection company on the Internet. To think that Google’s DNS service is for the benefit of the Internet would be naive. "

i believe Open DNS is tops. its been in my routers config page for... well since openDNS started.

google dns server isnt that fast yet. ping response time is 4ms. if you really want the best dns just do the core of the internet

4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2

I don't use any of OpenDNS's features and Google's are quicker to ping so I'll just use them.

Which is laughable. Any DNS provider that uses redirection to ad pages in place of failed request responses by DEFAULT is not doing anything for the benefit of a user. Use GoogleDNS and get proper responses or have to log in to update my IP to disable redirects on OpenDNS. Yeah. I'll choose the former every time.

I've never really construed an OpenDNS redirect as an 'advertisement.' I guess I kind of like that my family will get a message saying this a no-go site, and why (porn, malware, whatever).

On the contrary, I think OpenDNS default redirect is a good way to introduce novices to these more geeky aspects of internet life, as it encourages them to configure settings for themselves and introduces the concept of whitelists and blacklists that will empower them on so many other fronts.

If they use noninvasive means to better tailor the ads they serve to your interests, that's nothing but beneficial for you.

They're taking innocuous information and using it to benefit you whilst providing a free service. They happen to make money doing this (as a result of this), as amazing as that seems. And you call it "evil".

Very curious.

"Our research has shown that speed matters to Internet users..."

I want to know who those users are, because they clearly do not represent most people.

I have comcast 12/2 changed to the google DNS noticed an instant increase in responsiveness

exact same thing happened to me. I was at work and remoted into my home computer.. changed the dns on my home computer and remote desktop died. couldn't log back into my home computer.

I'm home now but can't test if i can connect. probably go back to my regular DNs before going into work tomorrow. I need to be able to surf from work.

4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2

Latency to/from is WAY diffrent than response time on a request. My webservers respond have a latency from east coast to west coast at 74ms on average, but page/PHP/MySQL adds 15ms on average.

4.2.2.1 (sometimes 4.1.1.1?) and 4.2.2.2 are just DNS servers on Level3's network that can be accessed from outside. You can use them, sure, but they're nothing more special than your ISPs. Only reason they might be faster is that they are on Level3's backbone, and are getting some sort of traffic prioritzation.

Interesting. Prompted me to sign up for an OpenDNS account :p $10 a year ain't bad at all (or free if you don't need the extra features)

I would love to use OpenDNS, but for some reason I was unable to get it to work with my VPN tunnel to work. I tried for about a week to get it work, and I was never able to get full functionality.

I tried google DNS, don't seem to have a problem with the VPN at all. It is really strange...

Both are worlds better than Time Warners servers

I will keep my OpenDNS. It's served me and my family well over the past four years.

Just use the DoD DNS servers like me....I mean not like me /ducks and hides under covers

Googles DNS or OpenDNS are all fine for the average user. But THIS is the [H]ard|Forum we run our own caching DNS servers on our LANs making repeated lookups even faster than Google or OpenDNS. And we can redirect to kittenwars for fuzzy cuddly love instead of advertisements. I bet there is even a DNS block list similar to the rbls you can integrate. Almost as much fun as data modeling the CRU emails on palintir.

Yeah, it seemed a little self serving to me as well. Reminded me of scareware.
