Google now offers a "search by sight" feature for phones called Google Goggles. Submit a picture and the search engine will cross reference it with billions of images and give you a search result.

Pretty cool, just tested it on my Droid, took a picture of a Blackberry Bold and it recognized it, also recognized a bottle of coke on my desk, and my HP keyboard.

Could be a lot of fun for shopping, altho Android phones already have a UPC-scanning thingamajig for that purpose don't they?

Just tried it on my Droid and it didn't so well at identifying things around my desk. Cool idea though, I think it'll need a little more testing.

Recognized my wallpaper accidentally from my monitor in the background, which made me try it on a few images from some of the wallpaper threads on [H], and it worked on a few of them. No more requesting links to wallpapers!

Another not so essential, but definitely cool, app for android.

Very awesome app. I just showed a few people here and now the whole company is going around taking pictures.

I know right? I consider it scary people could take someone's picture and learn who they are.

oh come on, you guys honestly think that it'll do facial recognition? Are you that paranoid?

This thing sucks....I tried it on like 5 different things on my desk and it didn't work, at all. They need to work on it quite a bit.

Forget about facial recognition. Bring on the body parts recognition. That I'd like to see! :D

Well, if there is enough stuff to compare it to.

Yeah there is a risk of that I suppose. Wonder how easily that could occur.

Pretty cool app though, but yeah - there are some potential issues with it I suppose.

Actually it does do facial recognition, it's the same software used on picasa, and will index people who've filled out their information to be searched for using Google Profiles (obviously an opt-in). I think if they were to expand it to use people tagged in Picasa it would become more useful and thus scarier.

This seems like a first meaningful step toward developing human HUD. No more search or asking others when you want to know what you're looking at. You'll just take a second to tap the collective digital memory of mankind. Paving the way to augmented reality.

Well, interaction with other humans is pretty important.
