Wired points out for us to remember those Pixel Buds that Google showed off last year. Remember? Those earbuds that were supposed to give you real-time translation for 40 languages? How did that all go? The author of this editorial thinks that Duplex, which we showed you yesterday, is more show than go. And he makes some good points.

Duplex also has the feel of an idea created in an echo chamber. The two leads on the project, Yaniv Leviathan and Yossi Matias, are both men with long and distinguished careers at Google’s R&D centre in Israel. Because hey, wouldn’t it be cool if an artificial intelligence could do all that dull work you normally ask your real-life, human assistant to do? Yes, but it would also be cool if you could stop confusing black people with gorillas.

I don't know... How hot is your real human personal assistant? :D

My wife makes my appointments... I'm pretty set there.

its 99% wrong in most asian languages ... maybe 1-2 words per sentence are accurate when i use their online service i cant imagine the headphones. its probably good for translating single words but thats it.

I think eventually we'll get there. But just seems like its too soon. Need to becareful on demo's like that. They probably handpicked the place to call so it would work with their software really well.

I just use a babblefish.

I would, but I require a much more highly developed olfactory system. Otherwise, how are descriptions of smells and tastes going to come across? Pfft!

:p

Be really cool if their AI went nuts and started spewing racist insults at people! Kind of like that other AI by Microsoft no it was Facebook right? They had to shut it down and pull the plug.

Also didn't the last AI Google create start designing its own AI 'children' that were talking in code no one could understand and they also pulled the plug?!

Eh, you have to start somewhere to eventually "get there." It has to begin iterating.

And in the tech world where first mover advantage is often everything, better to be too soon than too late.

You need to use the "Bender-Cipher". Which reveals that all they were saying is "Kill all humans!"

I think its inevitable that one day they will be saying 'Kill all humans'.. anyhow wonder when the Singularity is coming so I can start looking for John Conner!

I don't know. I met a Chinese chick a couple of months ago, who could not speak English. Just a few words.
We used Google translator. She spoke in a mic and it translated into text. And I did the same in English. It worked fine even though transpating Chinese into English is wrong many times. But it works more often than not and we were able to communicate. And it will only improve.
I think it's perfectly possible.

Soon they’ll implant a chip in everyones head letting anyone talk in any language. I personally can’t live without Google translate.

That's the thing. I see posts in some forums I use that are obviously using a translation program. But most of the time you can figure out what they are saying and the reverse. So you have to ask when is it good enough? My answer would be when the Sumo wrestler you're talking with isn't inclined to punch you out. That said people like my cousin who is a fluent Italian speaker and teaches it are probably going to be needed in sensitive political/business negotiations for some time to come...well unless the translation technology starts improving on an exponential curve.

Too bad he's dead, Randy Savage could be the voice model, and they could call it "Google Suplex".

Oooooh yeah brother!

of course product demos are filled with hype and sales speak.. LOL

but it is interesting to begin to see.. possibilities, not necessarily current realities.
