While I can see how it can be useful, I'm not a real big fan pf push notifications. What do you guys think about this?

To use GCM, your users must be signed into Chrome, as the service relies on an efficient push channel that’s only established for signed-in users. Messages are automatically delivered to all the devices where the user has signed in and installed your app/extension.

Been getting push notifications because of my Google Voice extension. I uninstalled the extension.

You can disable the notification. Its been in GV extension for awhile. Go into GV extension options and uncheck

Desktop Notifications Display a desktop notification if a new message comes in.

This sounds like Googles version of Socket.IO, but looking through the closure lib modules nothing stands out.

This is just so Google can read your emails from non-Google services.

No it isn't.

Especially since this doesn't let them do that anyway, unless your non-Google email service is particularly stupid. And even if your non-Google email service is actually that stupid and Google "read" it (wtf does that even mean, anyway? Computers don't "read"), they'd be slammed so hard by every government out there for violations of Google's privacy policy.

Why don't you like push notifications? They're more bandwidth efficient, use less CPU, use less battery, are faster, etc... They are better in every way over polling notifications...

I'm sure Google never looks at anything that ever passes through their servers, ever! Should I remind you that Google is the worlds Number 1 data mining and data seller? Please don't be so naive to think that the data collected by Google, Facebook et al is what they say it is, and used by just who they say it is.

I'm not saying they are going to actually read your mail with human eyes, they will just analyse it for whatever gains the data purchaser wants from it.

...what?

Ignoring the lack of technical accuracy of that sentence, this gets back to my original point of "Google can only see it if your non-Google email service is stupid". Google will also see your email if your email provider forwards all your email to support@google.com, but that's sure as hell not Google's fault.

Should I remind you that Google is the worlds Number 1 data mining and data seller?

Why would I want you to remind me of fiction? Google doesn't sell data.

Please don't be so naive to think that the data collected by Google, Facebook et al is what they say it is, and used by just who they say it is.

If you have evidence otherwise, sue them and make a boatload of cash.

Facebook uses the data for exactly what they say, the problem is that nobody reads what Facebook says they will do with the data.

Thank you, you just described every company on the internet.
