That's right I'm displaying my ultimate nerdom, but there's no better place to do so than [H]ere. :)

So my paps and I started going through the 7 seasons of Voyager, and that got me into the mood to do some space exploration of my own. I already have Bridge Commander, Starfleet Command 3, Star Trek Legacy (X360), and Elite Force 1. Are there any other strategy or tactical games worth looking at? I'd take a serious look at Armada if the reviews for both games weren't so mixed.
 
you pretty much covered all the good star trek games, good is a bad word for star trek games though, they mostly suck :(

Get starfleet command orion pirates, its much more indepth than SFC3.

Bridge commander is amazing. download the patch and the kobayashi maru mod.

EF1 has lots of mods, EF2 however, not as many. :(

Armada was okay... it seems to be VERY unstable with mods...

Legacy UGH! If you can mod armada, you can mod legacy, mad doc re used SO MUCH from armada it makes me sad, it doesnt deserve to be called a trek game, it was a major cash grab and it sucked. the modding community is working on it, but its really tough.

Bridge Commander - very accessible, fun, well crafted single player story

Starfleet Command 3 - deeper than Bridge Commander

A Final Unity - awesome TNG point & click style adventure, with some light space combat and other neat little features. This game features full voiceovers from the cast, theres so much dialog in this game it's really quite amazing.

Star trek 25th anniversery & judgement rites - these two are also point & click style adventure games with some interestingly handled space combat. If you can find the CD versions, they also feature full voice-overs from the cast of TOS.

Elite Force series - Run of the mill FPS games, but they modeled the decks of the Voyager & Enterprise exceptionally well, and they have good stories.

Star Trek legacy - Don't touch it with a 10 foot pole
 
Of course there's Elite Forces 2, and Starfleet Command 2, but I think you covered the good ones.

Klingon Honor Guard was decent. Starship Creator wasn't. Dominion Wars didn't look good either. Birth of the Federation is a bit old, but an average game.
 
legacy i would feel no remorse whatsoever in pirating. that game was released as hardly more than a tech demo with voice acting. i think modders have put far more of their personal time into that game than the studio ever did.

Agreed on these. Note that the version with the voices was re-released a few times, so shouldn't be that ridiculously hard to find.
 
Bridge Commander is really great - and theres a whole shed load of mods/third party ships out there for it.

Dominion Wars is... okay - not particularly inspired, if your a trekkie you'll most likely enjoy it though.

Birth of the Federation I really liked, was my original introduction too turn based strategy. The only real problem with it is that it periodically crashes, especially during multiplayer (which used too be a blast)

Armada 1/2 are both good fun, 1 is better, Single player game is good and had a pretty kick ass plot (involving cheesy star trek staples like borg, the omega particle and time travel)
 
StarTrek Armada 2 is the only good Real time strategy game within the Startrek world.

RTS as in Base building and large fleets of ships to control.


I like bridge commander and SFC3 for the more singular ship control..

But like I said, for massive ship and fleet battles along with building bases, mining resources. Armada 2, hands done.


Legacy isn't even worth mentioning, I played it for all of two minutes, I then uninstalled it As quickly as possible.

Unfortunatly this is true... a real disappointment.

Bridge Commander is still the best Star Trek game out. They need to come out with a BC2, with current 2008 Graphics IMO.

I dont know what to suggest to you. Elite Force 2 is good, but Ship Battle is where its at. I would suggest getting some mods for bridge commander, there are many out there to hold you over until Star Trek Online comes out in about a year.

Star Trek BOTF was a cool Turn Based Strategy. Their needs to be another ST game like this... prefrably one that is stable.
 
Star Trek online, thats going to be an incredible game from the looks of it. I have been playing the EVE online trial recently in anticipation.
 
The tie-in game for generations was decent, mostly because it played a bit like doom (with the occasional "use tricorder here" and "manipulate control panel there"), although good luck finding a copy nowadays.

Amazing games, highly recommended if you can stand pixels the size of a planet.

I'm more of a DS9 fan myself. enterprise was good at the end before they killed it.

The only Trek games I've enjoyed were the Elite Forces games.
 
I miss EF 1.

I was in a clan and we had great clan vs clan battles.

I was a great player in what I did.

I still have the disc. I loaded it some years ago. There were some servers playing but not much.
 
Nice, lots of nice pointers here! I'll take a glance at the other SFC games, so far I'm enjoying SFC3. :)

Haha! Voyager was the series that actually hooked me to StarTrek. I was in high school on the couch and had a fever. Didn't want to change the channel even though I despised StarTrek... fell in love with it that night. :p

Don't know much about DS9, but I know by Trekky father doesn't like it. He said it's like a space soap opera and the idea of a space station next to a worm hole or whatever was ridiculous (how everything had to come to THEM threw him off). Personally Next Gen and Voyager are my favorites, but I like Voyager the most. :)
 
I hated Voyager back when it was on air but going back through the series, there are some good episodes. Maybe I am just more open minded after being disappointed with Enterprise and the news about the new movie (another prequel, ugh)

Man I can't stand watching TNG or TOS. But I love Voyager and Enterprise. I want a Warp Drive Reactor now! :D

I dunno man. TNG made star trek what it is.... Sure, some old TNG is ick, just because it looks like it belongs in the 80's but hey, there were some really good episodes.

DS9 was still the most gripping however, with its very unique and intersting characters.

I liked dominion wars, but couldn't get it to run when I tried to replay it on modern hardware.

klingon honor guard was not that good, but it's worth playing if you like star trek.

I loved the starfleet command games, but I can't even remember which ones I have played/have not played. I know I liked the original.


There is also that DS9 game on the unreal engine. I don't think I ever finished it. I think maybe I had some technical problems with that.

TNG is just dull and PC... TOS is ok, but I really like DS9.

Voyager is utter crap. Only thing that made it watchable was 7's borg implants.
 
DS9 was dark and human. It also had the most fleshed out characters. I really liked TNG but it started to be the "Data saves the day again" show after a while. Still a good series though. Enterprise was starting to get good when they killed it. TOS still has to be tops....Kirk "Monkey Kicks" rock! :D

Series in order from best to worst IMHO...

  2. DS9
  3. TNG
  4. Enterprise
  5. Voyager
 
I prefer TNG and Voyager... I'm re-watching the 7 seasons as well actually.. I'm on season 5 right now. Voyager is my clear favorite of the entire genre, but I considered DS9 very good when I was watching it still, just not good enough to watch again.

I have never felt an urge to play the games though... are they any good? what kind of story / gfx? ... if its anything like Dreamfall: TLG I'll love it, but if its anything like Dreamfall the original, I'll hate it.

Re-watching Voyager ourselves, and it's not really that bad, but...

...I mean, the "Scooby Doo" syndrome on some episodes is WAY over the top. "When the monster chases Scooby into this room, he'll slides on this ice, then trip over the wire, and a bucket will fall on his head - falling right into our trap!" We've started joking when Janeway goes into her monologue for their complicated first solution for the weekly puzzle (that inevitably always fails) - "Oh, c'mon, not even for FOUR Scooby snacks?"

thats how i take it anyway. and as far as trek games go, you have to play "A Final Unity" might take some doing getting it working though as its a DOS game.

I play a lot of PC games. I have had a lot of fun with PC games, and will likely ALWAYS keep playing PC games.

But that, right there, is the reason I consider board games my primary hobby.

'A Final Unity' was a GREAT game. And yeah, you have to fight like HELL to get it to run anymore today. IF you can - I have no idea if it will work in Vista at all, given how much WinXP resisted efforts to make it work.

And that's a shame. With a great wargame or other board game if I feel like playing it 30 years after it was released...it's still going to be as rock-solid possible to play as it was the day I bought it. Heck, there are even a large number of boardgames that have most of the feel of the old DOS-based 'adventure games' about them.

(Although I'll still say - given how hard it was to get most of these DOS games working in the first place, I'd really love to be able to buy a working WinXP or Vista port of them! Change nothing at all - or, at least, change little. A digital distribution system like Steam or something would be welcome...but can you imagine the gold mine of older titles just sitting out there, unused?)
 
The klingon and borg old school games were good.

BOTF Birth of the federation is the best Trek game ever though. It needs a true sequal badly.
 
I wish their was a space exploration game that involved the Star Trek universe (not Legacy!)

I guess Spore takes that. :( I want my own ship damnit!
 
i find myself liking ds9 more and voyager less as i get older. tng had tons of good eps though

tng seemed to focus on classic social issues, while voyager more on the pssiblllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

Star Trek Armada and Armada 2 were fun.
 
I really like DS9's darker storylines and ongoing plot. Although really its only really good (I mean comparable too say Battlestar Galactica) in the last 2 series.

The 14 year old me was a real Voyager freak though.
