Good standard SolidWorks configuration

All,

We (the company I work for) are in the manufacturing business and have a large staff of engineers and drafters. I'm a little out of touch in SW hardware requirements (SolidWorks 2012 x64) but here is what we run as a standard base machine:

HP Z420 (3.6GHz E5-1620, 16GB DDR3 PC2-12800, Quadro 4000) - $2,419
Intel 240GB SSD - $250

Where is there too much power/too little? Can money be spent better elsewhere? I don't want to custom build these machines but adding things (video card, HDD, etc. is fine). We're an HP shop by-and-large but for the $$ could change on these machines.

For that much money I would custom build a lot better machine.

Or I would build a better system that is cheaper.

I use Solidworks, autocad,3ds Max. I can open two of the programs at once and do stuff on the 3rd monitor still.

I would try to put more processor power, ram, and video card behind it. Those cut down render time and file load times by a huge margin, increasing productivity.


One other advantage to custom builds is that it doesnt come with all the additional bloatware that takes up HDD space.
 
I don't have experience with Solidworks so I can't help you with that, I just wanted to respond to Ironhand's suggestion. Don't go custom build unless you're willing to accept the support implications :)

While you are correct I will also say that if quality components are used with good warranties then it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Also, if he saves his company 200-500 dollars(Just for reference) per machine then it would be cheaper to replace parts,should that need arise, then it would be to get anything with support. Most companies wouldn't be able to help him if Soildworks wasnt running right or had an odd conflict.
 
Yeah don't custom build this PC. Not a good idea for a manufacturing business. The advantages of a custom built PC do not mean much in this scenario.

Anyway, UncleDavid218, you could drop down the video card to the next lowest level and you'll be ok. Apparently you don't need a Quadro 4000 for SolidWorks. Besides that, looks good to me.
