I just finished my setup
e6600
Gskill 2x2gb ddr2 100
and Ga-ep35 ds3r
currently running stable at 2.8ghz with a coolmaster air cooler at average of 33 C
What do you guys think is a goos stable 24/7 clock for this chip, just trying to figure out the average that everyone is running.

Well i have mine at 3.2ghz stable idling temp at 33c, could be my case so YMMW.

what cooler do you use are you using air or watter.
this is my first overclocking project so I am being slightly modest not to kill the cpu or mobo.

3.5Ghz , i think so :)

heh I guess I need to play with it a little more tomorrow. here is a noob question. Right now the memory clock is set to auto and so is the power i keep the multiplier at 9 and just adjust the fsb leaving everything else to adjust on auto, is this a correct way of doing it or is there a better way?

well just took it up to 3.2 did pi test to 1m in 15 sec compare to 22 at stock 2.4 ghz. about to run orthos, idle temps around 30-32 which is a little higher.

Also a stupid question what temp reading is more accurate the speedfan reading is showing about 47 and 48 while the intel tat shows 52 and 48 and the gigabyte HW monitor from ther easytune 5 pro shows 40, which one should be closer to real temp.

I would set voltages at the stock setting for NB and RAM. 1.3 on the cpu and see how high it will go. After that go up by .025 to the get the speed you want at the temp you are comfortable with.

For temp monitoring I would go with TAT, its made by Intel for Intel chips.

I use TAT and Nv monitor (for temp logging) and TAT shows 46 with orthos and NV shows 51.

I'm using a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro its air cooled and very quiet for cooling, monitoring temps you could use TAT or coretemp which is very good at reading temps on the core. (3.5 nice..Yuk)

what are some max temps that i should be hitting at full load, right now at the TAT test after 10 minutes or so i get about 45 degrees but it does not climb past that.

OOh for reference I am currently running the coolmaster hyper 212 cooler, as I had one around.

I run mine at an easy 3.0ghz. temps maybe went up a degree, but no settings had to be changed on any voltages. maybe try it at 400fsb and check temps, bet they aren't much higher, although you will need some voltage at that point.

been running it a2 3.2 since yesterday and runs great, i will wait for the rest of my Water cooling stuff to come in before i go farther with this chip.

My Q6600 G0 is currently at 3.4 (425x8), 1.45V in bios, 1.35V read from speedfan, under full load w prime95 on all cores, 66C x2 and 60C x2 cooled by a Scythe Mine with the default 92mm fan. I think I'm going to go buy a higher CFM 120mm fan and install it in the Scythe Mine and see what it does to the temps...

I defiantly do not have the greatest cooler, but the cooler master 212 is a decent size cooler and I got it as an open box at frys for 30 bucks, did not want to spend too much on a cooler when I will have WC done in about a month.

Quad core + Watercooler = good way :D

I run mine at 410 x 8=3280 @1.375v. Idle temps are low 30s; 50-52 under heavy load (Orthos)

odd thing that i tried going above 3.2 and it would post but window would blue screen and this was just adjusting the fsb everything else set on auto except performance boost and power saving stuff disabled. at 3.3 ghz it would boot up and vista 64 bit would start but the BSOD

My E6600 does 3.6 with 1.48 but don't like the temps near 60c. I've been running 3.4 with 1.37 for awhile.

thats the odd thing leaving the voltage on auto will yield around a 1.38 at 3.2 whihc is too much but if i go to 3.4 it won't post. any tips on what to do, and I am not worried about the temps as much as I am running WC and at 1.38 v it does not go a hair over 40 at full load.

BTW you should use manual settings and set the volt to the right volts. i have mine at 367x9 to give me 3.3ghz and volts are at 1.31 but on bios it is set at 1.36875 cuz of the droop on these mobos. try that and see if that helps. Good Luck!

Thanks I will try that out tonight, did you leave the rest of the stuff on auto?

I have an E6600 in my Asus P5B as shown in my signature. I cannot get my computer to be stable unless I put both my memory voltage to 2.25 (there is no 2.2) and I need to have my voltage show up as 1.4 for the vcore in CPU-Z. The kicker is that I'm only running at 9X320=2880MHZ. which is so crappy. I used to run at 3GHZ 24/7 but it would randomly fail while folding sometimes. I find that my new set up is much more stable. My max temp is 52C, which isn't bad with a system temp of 39C and such high voltages (speed fan temps).

I have tried both taking the multiplier down to 6 and taking the ram further, but it eventually fails (showing that the ram may be at fault), but I can put the ram speed way down with the proper divider, put the multiplier back up to X9 and i still cant get my cpu to post at 3.2GHZ even with scary voltages of 1.475 vcore.

Not sure what is going on here.

Not sure what other settings your talking about, but i do have the ram multiplier set on manual and have it set at 2.0. Not sure if your bios would have the same presets like mine have, but since you have diff ram speed you should try to keep it under 1000mhz. Jonny, I'm not to familiar with the asus board but you could try 8x400 and try bringing your volts down to 1.3 or 1.35 and then work your way there if pc doesnt boot up then bring up your volt and see if that works.

Hey Glyphor - I actually did quite a bit of trying for a 400 FSB last night. I can't seem to get it. The highest that I successfully booted with was 345. I tried some FSB's between 350-400 and 400 and none of them would post no matter what i was using for voltages. I'm also assuming when you said volts down to 1.3 or 1.35 you mean vcore right? Well the problem is, is even at the 3.0Ghz that I have running right now, with a FSB of 333, I can't get anything stable unless I have my voltage (read in cpu-z as 1.415 which can droop down to 1.408 under full load). If i try anything lower it just isn't stable. Thankfully heat isn't an issue. Wish I could have some pro come figure my rig out :D

I have the E6600 with a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R mobo and Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 CL4 RAM. Using the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU HSF.

I OC'ed the FSB to 333 MHz (25%), giving me a CPU speed of 3.0 GHz. I left my RAM running at 800 MHz (RAM:FSB multiplier of 2.4) with 4-4-4-12 latencies. My Vddr is 1.9V.

Other than that, the only manual setting I have is Vcore=1.3V. I tried to find the lowest stable voltage to keep heat down. When the BIOS says 1.3V, the actual reading in Speedfan (or CPU-Z) is 1.264V. At load, it droops to 1.248V. I can run Prime95 for hours with no probs., and I play COD4 with no problems. My core CPU temps under load are around 57C.

You shouldn't need more than 1.35V to run the E6600 at 9x and FSB=333. You might try lowering your RAM to 800 MHz and a Vddr of 2.1V. What is your core temps under load--maybe you have a heat issue?

Yes, Jonny thats what i meant the Vcore settings. It could just be the Mobo cuz when my brother had this cpu in his Mobo which is a evga680i, he couldnt get past 3.3ghz without crashing and i can easily boot up at 3.5ghz, but my temps are too extreme for this ACF7Pro to handle. so i leave it at 3.3ghz and it stays comfortable at about 57c to 59c under orthos.

I have been trying to search the forums in regard to e6600 and asus p5b. I wish I could compare to other people what they are doing. I know that no two systems overclock alike, but i really feel like mines far behind.

Johnny Blaze:

the p5b series boards act very strange in teh 300FSB range ----

UNLESS

you manually set the ram timing!!!! Took me forever to find this out, could never get stable above 325 or so.
Set the ram timings to 5 5 5 15 and boom, 450 no problem.
(with my 6300).

Thank you! that gives me hope. I really havn't had luck with a stable clock higher than 333. I'll go check my ram timings and give a few things a try.

*Update*: I have been fooling around with settings for a few hours. The max FSB that i have been able to reach was 380. 390 was no go. I tried 399, 400, 401, 425, 450. I tried all these FBS's with a multiplier of 6, and my ram divider set to the lowest so as to isolate the front side bus.

I also ran into another interesting problem. I was trying to get my cpu to overclock past 3.0GHZ. I tried a overclock of 3.15GHZ. The voltage in CPU-Z for vcore shows up as 1.440V, but once i run orthose it immediately dives to 1.424 and sometimes dips as low as 1.416. Once its hit 1.416 a time or two it will either report errors and stop or it will blue screen.

I'm really starting to wonder if my Antec Truepower 550W power supply is enough. Could that crazy drop in voltage mean my power supply might be responsible for the lack of overclocking? I have 4 harddrives, 5 120mm fans, a soundcard, an 8800gts (overclocked) and then my e6600(overclocked). Maybe im asking for too much out of this PSU?

Nah you have more then enough juice to supply, my vid card pulls alot more juice then that 8800gts and never had any problems. That droppage is normal its called droop. alot mobo's do that just like mine i got it in bios set at 1.36875 on windows it drops to 1.31 to 1.28v.

I would recommend setting the cpu voltage higher to compensate. WHat version of teh antec PSU do you have? How many amps on the 12V rail? If it is an older version, it may not be able to keep up.

So you are now using manual mode for the memory? Make sure you are setting teh ram to an apropriate speed fro overclocking, to eliminate this as a potential problem.

Thanks kirbster - As far as higher cpu voltag,e i am scared to have it higher than 1.450 in cpu-z. I'm not sure if my fears are well-founded or not.

As to my powersupply, its the antec 550 trupower 2.0. So i believe its the newever version. I remember doing quite a bit of research at the time (a little over a year ago) and it seemed that the antec 550 outperformed competing offerings of the time. As to the amperage on 12 volt rails, its dual-12v rails i believe and each has a maximum of 19A. Hope that helps?

*update* I'm pretty darned sure that this is my power supply.

Ok, then you do have more then enough psu for your setup. That volt is kinda high when you have to factor that you can only get to 3.0ghz, but like i said before it just could the mobo and what someone said before you could have a bad mobo. i would try and find someone or take it somewhere that they can test your chip and mobo or take the water route.

For temp monitoring I would go with TAT, its made by Intel for Intel chips.

.

Wrong, wrong, and oh, by the way, wrong :D TAT was made for MOBILE cpu's and have been shown to be way off for most C2D based cpu's....

Core Temp is where it's at, with the option set to show "delta to tjunction max".....

Currently running mine (b2 stepping) @ 3.33, stable under Orthos Blend for 17h+. 370 x 9.0. Ram is set to 2.50 (5:4) for 462.5 (925mhz, Crucial Ballistix). I am currently running Small FTTs @ 3.35 to see if it holds up. I shot for 3.4GHz, but had to clear my CMOS after shiz hit the fan.

I have a Zalman 9700nt CPU cooler set to 1600rpm with my fan speed controller (moderate noise, easily tolerable). My idle temps are low to mid 30s, both cores read 56c under full load running Small FFTs (going on 3h now). My vcore is currently 1.387 in bios, 1.360 with droops, and 1.328-44 under load. I decided not to keep pushing the fsb (though I could, with the P35-DS3R), as I don't want to deal with the strap once I break the 415 mark. However, I will be shooting for 450 once I snag my Q9450 in the next few weeks.

I did have to bump my G(MCH) voltage +0.2 (during a bad stretch, I also bumped FSB voltage +0.1v and PCI-E +0.1v just to take them out of the equation), that was the only thing I found out of the ordinary. However, I chalked that up to my ram having a stock voltage of 2.2v. I picked up a Thermaltake HR05/IFX northbridge cooler to replace the stock heatsink. I slapped an 80x15mm Hiper fan on there, and my mobo (northbridge) temps barely crack 42c during Orthos. With the Crysis bench, northbridge hits 52c, being so close to my scorching hot 8800GTS 640mb.
