good psu calculator?

seeing as the sticky is from 2004, and the psu calculator in the link doesn't account for more than a athlon xp 3200, anyone know of a good psu calculator to use nowadays?

I picked my HX620 based on this...but take the results with a grain of salt and go for a marginally higher wattage PSU. For eg. my result was a HX520/VX550 ...i bought the HX620.

Point to note is that PSU wattage degrades over time ...so higher is better/safer
 
so are you saying that nobody on this entire forum knows of one, or that you personally don't know of one?

There aren't any good or accurate ones. There are a few PSU calculators out there but they GROSSLY over estimate the wattage you need. Also most of the PSU calculators do not account for how much amps you should have on the +12V rails. Not all 450W PSUs are the same. Some come with as little as 16A on the +12V rails to as much as 33A on the +12V rail.
 
I found this the other night when looking for a PSU calculator that is free and actually works.

But keep in mind, they only give a basic output of watts, no amps and don't account for overclocking, or many additional components.

They mention, and I quote;

I found another calculator on the Antec website. Not sure if it's accurate at all, but it certainly offers more options than the others...

Wish we could find more specs on power consumption or a reliable calculator to help make buying a new PSU easier. With so many different brands, models, ratings and specs, it's virtually hit or miss.

It's exactly the same as the non-Antec version. Besides a different layout, they are the exact same calculators.
 
Do your own calculations.
I look at most reviews on hardware and keep an eye out for wattage. Then if you know, for example, a video card is mostly 12v then copy that value down either on paper, notepad, or excel etc. Sum up the components and you've got your requirements. When ocing just give the values an exact % increase BUT if you change the voltage, increase again by the % increased. So for a cpu that uses max 75w, you up the voltage from 1.2 to 1.4 and oc it from 1.8GHz to 2.6Ghz you can assume it's putting out approx 126w. That's not entirely accurate but it'll get you an approximate. There are lots of easy google searchs you can do to come to some conclusions. What ever you do, go with the quality lower wattage over the cheaper higher wattage PSU.
I don't have all the high tech testing equipment but I do have a Kill-a-watt meter and it measures my e6300 @ 2.8Ghz, 3GB, ASUS P5B-E, 7600GT, DVD burner, and 4 250GB 7200.10's to be WELL below my Fortran FSP 400w's PSU limit. Infact it's kind of silly how little power my system requires. A lot of that has to do with the choice of hardware. I went for efficiency over raw power. 7600GT was in a good review, 2nd on the performance/watt scale a year ago. The mobo doesn't have any extra krap, hence the "E", and the processor is a c2d which is runnin on stock voltage.
 
wow that newegg one was off. Said my system would take 858watts. That was not even close
