Good machine for Photography/Image processing

Yah, the XP OEM licensing thing was spread throughout the tech world when it came out, but many avg joe's don't particularly know that its not transferable. I guess the idea is that your next system will come with it preloaded anyhow? I don't know. It just teaches you the lesson of doing more homework when buying things. Besides, you never actually own software... most of the time, you're just buying a license to use it.
 
I posted this problem in the Video Card section, but it didn't go anywhere. I'm having an issue that I could use a recommendation on.

The computer stops running Windows, giving a nv4_disp error message. Sometimes during use, sometimes right after "waking up" and I'm logging in, sometimes turning on the monitor to start my day and the error message is there. My RAID1 is rebuilding now. A reminder of the internals so you don't have to look back in the thread:

Corsair HX520W PSU
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R and Intel Q6600
4GB Patriot Extreme Performance DDR2 800 (2 x 2GB)
MSI NX8500GT-TD256EH GeForce 8500GT 256MB 128-bit video card
3 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB HDs (2x RAID1)
LG GSA-H55NK DVD burner
Windows XP Home SP2 O/S

I got the latest driver for the video card (169.21) a couple weeks ago , but it has made no difference. I tried several other drivers as well.

From what I have read this seems to be a widespread NVIDIA vs. XP problem, with no single end-all solution. One suggestion I found was to reduce the Hardware Acceleration in the Display Properties to None. I did that, and a NVIDIA Dislay message popped up stating, "The NVIDIA Display Panel extension cannot be created", and it says to set the Acceleration to Full. I don't know what "Display Panel extension cannot be created" means, so I set it back to full.

On http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=4432 a guy has a patch available. Dunno if that is good thing to do or not, though. I see some suggesting changing various settings in BIOS, and trying multiple drivers, etc., etc.

Rather that go through a continual trial and error process, can't I just put in a card that isn't NVIDIA? I would rather spend a hundred bucks (or two) on a new card and be done with it than spend countless hours trying this, that, and the other, just to walk in to find a BSOD, yet again. The system is not used for gaming, only household data and photography/video processing (and not much of that, yet), so it needn't be something blazing, I just want the dang thing to work reliably!

Recommendations?

You want to get rid of the Nvidia card here's a 2600XT that'll do fine for you for $60 AR: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1280909

That said, I'm running XP with various generations of Nvidia hardware and have zero issues, so I don't think the source of the problem is actually where you think it is. If it were that clear cut there would be a whole lot more people screaming bloody murder.
 
One last thing before you ditch the card... When you removed the old drivers, did you use Driver Cleaner Pro? If not, try running that, then reinstalling the latest driver.
 
silent-circuit, I'm still reading. Seems everything is being blamed, with folks pointing at faulty hardware as well. I find folks suggesting swapping out the card, and RAM, and PSU, but jeesh, I'm not a shop! I don't have spares laying around, I have to buy all this stuff! One thing for sure, I'm not alone. There are many web pages dedicated to this issue, all NVIDIA with W2K/XP.

i have been getting the nv4_dis erro lately under server 2003 and XP, with nviia 169 and 163 drivers, i went back to vista and no issues yet.
 
Walked in to a locked up machine this morning. <sigh>

Thanks, MrGuvernment, I'll keep that in mind, though I'm not willing to go to Vista at this point.
