What can go wrong with a computerized 24/7 surveillance system designed to help your dumb ass find your car in a parking lot? Privacy advocates are up in arms but hey, I'm sure this isn't all bad. Right? I mean, it's not like a stalker can track your car using the kiosk or the police can use the system to ticket cars with expired tags or other violations. :rolleyes:

Santa Monica Place recently unveiled the nation's first camera-based "Find Your Car" system. Shoppers who have lost track of their vehicle amid a maze of concrete ramps and angled stripes can simply punch their license plate number into a kiosk touch screen, which then displays a photo of the car and its location.

Will also help track down stolen cars. Santa Monica also seems to have tax label thieves, so I'm not ever going back there, anyhow.
 
thieves do not need technology to help them... just street smarts which is usually dumb common sense.
 
@caniba, you're totally right! That's the exact phrase that came out of my mom's mouth when she saw this on the news. 'Tis my neck of the woods (Dogtown to be specific for you surfers/skaters out there). Neither she, nor her boyfriend would be helped here, "what's my fucking license plate number again?!". Me on the other hand, could probably recite license plates from every car I've ever owned.

But, hey I don't personally much care about the parking @ SM Place, you won't find me going there (I did the week it reopened, within 5 minutes I turned around and went home!). They fucked up the mall big time, and I see it going down in flames. It was totally shelled few years back, just reopened a few months ago as an open air mall, nothing like the one seen in "Fast Times....." back in the 80s. So instead of putting things in like people would actually use, shop at, be able to afford (the going rate for a 1 bdr apartment even in MY area is 3000$+/month!!, north of the mall is worse), you know Target type places.... What do they put in? Betsy Johnson, Coach, Ed Hardy, Hot Topic (die already!), Kitson, Louis Vuitton, Swarovski, Tiffany and Co.... Yeah, like there aren't already enough of those fucking stores in the valley, Beverly Hills, not needed or wanted here. 3rd Street, right across SM Blvd from the mall is no better. It used to have cool little one off shops and is little more than chain shit stores now, Old Navy, Restoration Hardware, Skechers, etc.

As far as this goes, *fuck* the city of Santa Monica with a rusty iron pole. They make MILLIONS on parking fees/fines every year. Hell, check youtube for that KABC/7 piece where the parking people ticketed about 10 cars, live on-air (back in late May I think), during an electric car segment @ the pier. Yeah the station fucked up by not paying for the spots, or putting up the receipts in the windows, but holy hell that city employee was ballsy.

Ask ANYONE that lives in the area, or has visited, how great the parking Nazi's are around here about slapping a ticket on your car. I get the great privilege of of paying $60/year for parking passes to park on a publicly funded road, yet still have to hunt around for parking spaces, since you are limited to a *2 block radius* of your address. It's high time to take the parking garages all over the city and provide unimpeded residential parking access for FREE at all times, we paid for the damn things to be built and maintained with our tax dollars and fines/parking permit fees. It's fucking disgusting how many people park around here for extended periods, esp on the weekends, taking up precious spaces for those of us living here. It's even more fun when it's a "beach day", or when there's one of those damned gem shows over @ the civic auditorium. What's worse there's talk of them pulling down a few of the garages (there's 6 or 8 of them for the 3rd Street/mall area) for more store space,yay even less parking! Oh, and up until a couple years ago, the city actually ran this clusterfuck of public parking garages, now it's been pawned off onto PRIVATE companies, hence this "protection" feature (read: it's primary purpose will become to TICKET people, mark my words).

/rant off, I could keep going for days. I am SO over SoCal, born and raised, and getting the hell out as soon as I can afford to head back north again.
 
These people should be receive a high-voltage shock to wake them from their somnambulistic state.
 
Give it a couple of years and privacy won't be an issue with things like this. Marketing will having the mass sheeple 'begging to have their freedom taken away.' They already do in other aspects.
 
If your memory is so bad that you cannot remember where you parked, you should not be driving in the first place.

I think this is a great Idea as long as it stays limited to private orgainizations or public entities that deal in mass trasportation. This system is already in works at Tampa Airport. I could not find my car, so I went to a Kiosk, entered my license plate, and in seconds they gave me turn by turn directions to my car. So the 40 minutes I thought I could find it, was a waste to the 2 minutes to use the machine, and the 3 minute trip to the correct floor and route.

This is not always a big brother tool. You ever take a trip for weeks and come back and can find the car.... and you have attendents that don't give a rats ass because they have to come out of their warm booth or stop talking to their GF/BF to call a crew to help you drive for possibly an hour to find your car.

Something nationalized like this is WRONG, STATE LEVEL is wrong.

This is something that should be location based only.... Airports, train stations.
