Good Free CPU Stress-Test Software?

I just purchased an i7 920 and this will be my first overclocked system. I'm looking for free stress test software to help me determine the stability of my future overclock.

What free programs do you use to stress test your system?
 
Good old prime 95.

There's also Linpack/LinX if you really want to heat things up.
 
Try IntelBurnTest which uses Linpack. I had an overclock that was stable on prime but failed IBT within a minute.

Intel Burn Test, OCCT 3.1 and Prime 95, Memtest, Othos etc

note: I swear I remember having posted in a 6 page thread somewhere here on this forum relating to stress test, benchmark related software with links. :confuse:

uhmm opposite for me when I was doing this on my mains. IntelBurnTest found out nothing after 20x. OCCT 3.1 crashed at 1hr 15mins due to error on core 1. Prime 95 did not give a single error after a overnight 8hr 43 minute burn in and still ongoing. :confused:

I like the SMP Folding client. Not only do you test your OC, but if it's stable, you could potentially help humanity. But all of the previously mentioned programs will work.
 
I toss in my 4 cents (inflation)

You need to consider several different kinds of stress testing.

It somewhat depends on the use of the machine, I will assume gaming but it is easy to see where I am going with this and come up with your own strategy.

Thermal stress.
Program(s) to test the heatsink and overall case cooling.
a) CPU heat test - The Intel one for your CPU is likely the best. Try em all and use the one that realtemp etc. reports the highest temp on. See below about letting the room get warm when testing, your call.
b) Video card heat test - furmark, whatever floats your boat.
c) see if you can run them both at the same time.

Computational accuracy.
a) Prime95, linpack, whatever.

Overall System real world reliability.
Turn off the AC, open a window etc. what ever needed to let the room warm up to above average temps. Run/play the living crap out of the primary application the machine is intended for for as long as you possibility can.



My point is that as far as I know there is not one perfect program to test all of these aspects of the machine.
