i originally planned on getting a asus xonar essence st.. adding a second gpu has made that impossible. my only option is external, whats good in the same price range?
 
searching around a bit this is what is appealing to me atm... but i'm pretty clueless when it comes to audio stuffs.

I was in the same boat - SLI hogged slots driving out my sound card. I went with a FiiO E9 + E7 bundle. Drives my headphones nicely. Outputs to my speakers as well. It's a solid DAC - not quite as good as the sonar essence st, but for the money, it's a nice alternative that's completely external. The E7 is also nice and portable if you want to use it with a laptop or even as an amp for an mp3 player when traveling or on the go. Sells on amazon for roughy 185, shipped.
