hey I wanna get a really nice to watch..something to kinda test out my audio...
You guys know any good battle/war movies other than the LOTR, I don't enjoy them.

The first sequence of Star Wars Episode III has very good sounding surround sequence. The Lucas arts movies are all mixed very well. They are great for testing out your system. Look around for THX audio tests. They are also great for testing out your system.

I've been looking around for good surround discs lately for the same purpose. Here are the best I've found so far:

1. Saving Private Ryan - from personally listening to it, and taking a general consensus from my research, this is considered the best surround sound mix to date.

2. Twister - the DTS mix is absolutely incredible

3. Any Star Wars movie, as mentioned above

4. Terminator 3

5. War of the Worlds - DTS is better than DD on this disc

6. King Kong - anything on Skull Island

7. Any of the three Jurassic Park movies - opt for the DTS tracks

8. When 300 comes out on disc, that will be an absolute must-buy for guys who want to test out their sound... lots of thunder in the movie

I actually like the section in Star Wars Ep. 2, where Obi-wan is in something of a dogfight with Boba Fett. There's a very good mix of dynamics and full-range effects that really make it a pretty good demo for a system. Pure Ben Burtt/Skywalker Sound pleasure throughout the entire scene, with stellar spatialization.

War of the Worlds is also pretty stunning, thanks to industry-giant Richard King. Particularly the scene in which the first Tripod emerges, though there other notable scenes there.

Surprised no one mentioned this one, but if you want really kickass audio on a DVD, then...

Top Gun definitely sits squarely in the top 5 of all-time, if not the top 3. When that came out on LaserDisc many a year ago it was THE demo disc to push and destroy audio systems. :)

If you really want to test out an entire surround system not only for overall great sound quality but more specifically for spatial placements, try Terminator 2 or True Lies, here's why:

In Terminator 2 once the good guys get inside Cyberdyne, there's a point where they have to blow open a secure door to get inside the room. Doing so sets off the Halon fire supression systems. The Terminator steps out with the necessary hardware to let Sarah Connor and Miles Dyson into the lab.

The camera angle then changes to a point of view from deep inside the lab as they enter. The Terminator pushes a handcart full of explosives and items to a point just in front of the camera as it begins to move. As the camera moves forward, the Terminator steps towards and to the right of the camera (meaning your left from the front perspective) and walks up a few steps to a part of the lab that's like 2 feet higher.

In the time this happens, as the Terminator steps beside the camera, on a really wicked surround system you should:

1) Feel the bass of the footsteps as he comes forward and
2) The steps will actually sound like they're on your immediate left.

Freaked me out when I first heard it in the actual theater with a THX kickass system really cranked high, but the best most awesome single moment that rules in my mind was in True Lies.

There's a scene about 2/3 of the way in where he's been kidnapped along with his wife (the eternally fine Jamie Curtis). They've escaped from their captors but they've still got to try and stop them from delivering a few nukes across southern Florida.

In the scene I'm talking about, Schwarzenegger's character Harry is crouching behind some construction hardware. He reaches behind him, pulls a grenade off his belt and pulls the pin. As he does this, he takes his thumb off the clip and it flies off the grenade towards the viewer/the screen and flies to the left of the direct center (meaning your left shoulder while viewing the screen, just like the sound effect above).

Man, I swear to god, not only did I immediately snap my head to the left, but half the audience around me did the exact same thing. It's that kind of reaction when you detect a bug, a fly, a bee, wasp, whatever flying on the side of your head. You detect not only the sound they make but you feel the air as they fly past.

TOTALLY freaked me out and those of us seated in the middle section just reacted instantly to that moment and that sound placing.

I've never ever in the thousands of movies I've seen in theaters in my lifetime had something like that happen. THX rules for that stuff, it really does.

Those are two specifics, along with the always awesome Top Gun as I mentioned already.

Have fun, always...

here are some of my favs.. repeating some of the others that were posted.

Terminator movies
Hunt for Red October
Das Boot (gotta love submarine movies for audio)
Saving Private Ryan
Black Hawk Down
Matrix
Gladiator
The Abyss
all George Lucas movies
Red Violin (DTS version)
Last Samurai
The Others (really freaky audio sequences)

Add to the list before my post....

Tears of the Sun

Good movie and great great sound.

Your local "Hi-Fi" store may have demo CD's or DVD's for calibrating systems. THX WOW DVD and there is another one I think it's called the Avia CD. Usually for sale in Sound and vision magazines. Sometimes P2P apps will have clips of THX material for testing.-So I have been told!:D I actually use the THX sound for Windows starting up. Sound very cool if you get a good version or record yourself a good version...

Titan AE Chapter 16, some of the best bass from a movie period.

Saving Private Ryan DTS, the first scene

Pulse (read the AVS forum thread on this one)

Yeah, the sonic mine things in the asteroid field are amazing. One of the best sounds I've heard in a theater, but I think they changed it slightly for the dvd.

Saving Private Ryan (beach landing, and the tank approaching the village) and Matrix (lobby scene, plus 'morpheus is fighting neo') have been mentioned previously, but are great.

If all you want is a gunfight, then get Heat (Michael Mann film.) There's a running gun battle through downtown LA that lasts for about 10 minutes and will really give your surrounds a workout. Miami Vice (also by Mann) has a good audio mix, though I didn't care much for the film.

Ronin has a great car chase, gunfight and explosions, and is definately worth seeing and hearing.

You can also get a lot of the dolby digital and dts trailers here. I think that thx.com has the thx trailers - the cow one is my favorite.

Swordfish!

Explosive vest full of Ball-bearings in the opening robbery scene! This will test your sub and put enough volume on the rears and or sides to strain them.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0244244/

Sound Mix: DTS / Dolby Digital / SDDS

Not to mention sweet visuals as well.

Really? All I can specifically recall is that that scene was jaw dropping (or the audio equivalent to jaw dropping) in the theater. Man, what a fucking punch!

V for Vendetta has some pretty good mixing too. Especially the 1812 overture over the explosions when he blows up parliament at the end. Test to see if you can really hear both at the same time :)

QFMFT.

The sound stage presented during this scene is abso-freakin'-lutely phenomenal, and everytime one of the "bad guys" lets off a round, especially Val Kilmer's character, the sheer impact of the sound from the muzzle followed up with the bounced reflections from up and down the section of city block they're surrounded by... man, that's what surround sound is all about.

Highly recommended...

finding nemo is really good (the scene where darma taps on the glass tank is a great sub test)

and the Incredibles is a great surround sound / LFE movie

i put a vote in for pulse... near the end an the server room my PB12nsd made my shower curtains oscillate about and inch and a half in my 16x15 bedroom.

the first tripod scene in war of the worlds was mixed well

Others when kids are in bed and the footsteps move off after the boy is touched on the cheek

apple seed was mixed well and the fight scenes are ear candy
