I want to get a new cpu for my desktop which also acts as my file server. I don't want to get a new mobo, but mainly just a new cpu and more ram, And 2 80mm case fans. I want to go quad core. I will be overclocking so I will also need a good heatsink. I will more than likely lap it also.

- Budget?
- What motherboard do you have?
- What case do you have?
- How much RAM do you have now and how many sticks of it?

Budget would be under $500,
My current motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-69GM-S2H
I have a Coolermaster CM541 with a 380w PSU
Only 1 gig of ddr2 667mhz ram. One stick.

What 380W PSU do you have?
Oh and you forgot to add the MA portion of your motherboard's model number ( GA-MA69GM-S2H). Speaking of which, have you update the motherboard's BIOs to the latest version?

Coolermaster 380w PSU that came with the case. And I realized I forgot the MA portion after I posted it. I'm not exactly sure how to update the bios.

Read the manual for instructions on how to update the BIOs. If you don't have update the BIOs, then you cannot use any of the Phenom quad-core CPUs.

Also are you using the onboard video or a video card?

AMD Phenom 9850 Black Edition CPU - $169
G.Skill F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ 2 x 2GB DDR2 1000 RAM - $68
Thermalright Ultima-90 HSF - $46 & Panaflo FBA09A12M 92mm Fan - $3
Silverstone ST400 400W PSU - $30
---
Total: $316 plus tax and shipping.

I recommend ditching the DDR2 667 RAM from your rig since it might limit your OC. In addition, I recommended a new PSU since that CM 380W PSU isn't a good quality PSU. Since you're overclocking, a better PSU like the ST400 might help. The Phenom 9850 BE has an unlocked multiplier and should make overclocking easier. The Ultima 90 should fit inside your mATX case and is a very good HSF.

However, do note that you will need to update the BIOs first before putting in the Phenom CPU.

+1
I was going to argue that you cant use a quad core with that motherboard, but the website says it supports the X4 9850be.

Surprised I was

If you have the Rev 1.1 version, you can run a 140w 9950 if you really wanted to.
