Going nuts...(stuttering)

Mine is a brand new rig and I have it, doesn`t make sense as to why this is happening to me as well...... I also have the exact same issue by the way, lag (not stutter) when panning camera, anything below 60 fps.

I'm stuck on this too bud. :p

Were you gaming on a crappy laptop before with 30 fps max you can achieve in games?, because I owned a Envy 17 before this which had a 5850 mobile in it and it used to run everything at 30 fps on high settings. I am starting to think that as I am gaming on a Desktop rig now and getting 60 fps easily, I lost tolerance for fps dips below 60. Back then 30 fps seemed OK to my eye but now it does not.

I notice every lil dip, thats what i can't let this go. I wonder if a true 120hz monitor would fix this.

This is a long shot, but:

At the basement LAN's I frequent, one of the games we play is FEAR: Combat, and I've noticed over the years some framerate issues among as many as half the people there relating to "HID-Compliant Device" in the device manager under human interface device. Systems that should get 1,000+ fps on such an old game got terrible FPS and microstutter.

Try uninstalling the "HID-Compliant Devices" in device manager one-by-one and see if it fixes it.

I know this probably has nothing to do with the problem, but it's worth a try, and has to do with -PK-'s suggestion.

The HID-Compliant Device thing is an issue with certain games, but I don't think it would be an issue with everything. I know Kane and Lynch used to have that issue.
The problem is, that's often associated with your mouse/gamepad/keyboard or some kind of input device you're likely using to play the game. Sometimes you might even have one for every single USB port on your machine.
You can disable them for certain games, but something tells me that isn't the end-all-be-all fix.

Tried this and the frame limiter set to 59 or 61, no difference whatsoever, the games still lags even at reasonably high fps when panning camera. Any other ideas?

If you have a hyper-threading enabled CPU, you can try disabling that.
Any chance you have the manual for your television? You might be able to find information on the detailed settings for your TV as a monitor in the back of it.

yeah iv done everything. My tv is calibrated really well.

Are you sure the issues we are experiencing isn`t a placebo because as it seems, the fps counter reads the fps correctly but the lag is not proportionate. Isn`t that contradictory?.... I mean the fps counter will only show what the actual fps is right, so in that case how could we see less frames per second than is actually displayed to get lag?........

I don't think its placebo cuz when I get 70 i get the lag when i get 80 i get the lag when i get 50 i get the lag but soon as its 60 the lags stops. locked or not 60 fps stops the lag. any over or under gives the lag. It can't be placebo.

Then I guess I also have the exact same issue, 60 fps does not lag for me at all, everything else does, less than 60, lag..more than 60, horrendous stuttering... I doubt i`ll find a solution for this cuz this issue is very weird and specific to certain rigs...:(

but 2 different rigs do it for me. its hard for me to believe that out of 1000 some views this thread got. This happens only to you and me. Its crazy. Do people not care to notice this? Cuz its there, well for me and you it is.

Well others dont see it because they dont have this issue and we do. I presume Domingo had the same issue but his got solved with the Afterburner frame limiter which does not seem to work for me. I think the issue is with the monitor or tv. I am guessing that when the fps drops below 60 the refresh rate drops to 30 or below that suddenly, eventhough the GPU might be pushing more frames than the refresh rate. Lets say the fps is 45, so GPU->45 fps but Monitor->30 Hz, I think this is exactly what is happening.

Could be anything lol, I tried 3 different displays. But I never got this issue till about a 3 weeks ago. I think I'm gone replace my mobo when i get payed. if that dont fix well then im getting a new cpu. If that don't fix it then I'm done with computers for a while.

Idk if I should buy a new vid card before the mobo and cpu. 2 rigs do this which makes me not even want to spend money. But hey as they say F it.

The only game that im having stuttering issues is the BF3 right after i downloaded the new map pack. Its pretty terrible to the point i can't play without getting pissed off. I game at 1440p with Galaxy 3gb 660Ti. Every game besides BF3 runs flawless.

what about CS GO do u play that?

Good luck with the mobo purchase!... I myself need a new mobo capable of overclocking so my next upgrade will be that after getting my salary, jeesh this recession definitely has increased the length of my upgrade cycle and is kickin me in the nuts .... Hope it solves the issue, gotta be ready for Crysis 3...

Tell me about it man, I will post an update the minute this is fixed. I just build this rig took forever to save up for it. Now I'm doing it all over again cuz of dumb stutter this ain't fair. I wish I had a PC tech shop filled with CPUs and mobos. It would of been fixed a long time ago then. :p But I don't, so I got to blindly shoot at what it might be. HATE THAT.

The big question is what happened 3 weeks ago that affected 2 different systems?... I'm doubtful that it's hardware if two systems started exhibiting the same issue at the same time.

Are both affected systems in the same room?

This may sound dumb, but have you tried physically moving the machine to another location purely to test the power coming out of the wall? Has anything changed recently power related, like plugging in a halogen floor lamp near the pc?

yeah i took the PC over to my parents house to try their monitor. One day I joined a game on CS GO with my friend and it was there. Then I thought it was just the game but then all games did it. IDK what to do lol. I don't want to get new hardware but really what else can i do lol. :(

No lamps nothing like that. For all I know my old PC might of always did it but I never noticed it till I build my new one, and then my new one started to do it, so I noticed the change right away. Plus through all this I found out my new mobo has 2 dead dimm slots. I'm never buying anything from Asrock again. This extreme4 was to good to be true. System just boot loops if I put the ram in those dimms. Tired different ram too. I get error code 55 on the error display. So I guess I might as well get a new mobo anyway. But if the stutter stopped I could careless about 2 dead dimm slots. I put over thousand hours of gaming on my old AMD rig in lil over a year. That might of wore it down a bit. But then again I'm just shooting blind now. I even ran the ivy bridge CPU graphics, and still got the stutter so I know its not my video cards.

yes they are in the same room, i7 for gaming AMD for TV needs.

Gone try to install XP on my AMD rig and see what happens. Maybe I got a bad win 7 OS cd. It is burned, I lost my original. Tried 64 bit and 32bit win 7.

I just finished installing a GTX 560 TI on a PC and I noticed that Borderlands (steam version) had a popping issue that I had not noticed before. It was especially noticable when you strafed left and right while looking at vertical geometry. It would be smooth for half a second, then pop, smooth, then pop. Looking further I noticed it on all objects, but it was easiest to see on a vertical object like an electrical pole. It wasn't something I noticed before but I am noticing now. I booted up a second PC (also with a 560 TI) and it was doing the same thing. So I booted up my PC (AMD Radeon HD 6950) and it too was doing the same thing. I believe it has been doing it all along, and the only reason I noticed it was because of this thread. THANKS OP!;):)

The fix for the NVidia cards was to create an application profile specific to Borderlands and force VSYNC to ON. Upon restarting the game everything was smooth (no more popping while strafing).

I do know that forcing VSYNC = TRUE in the .ini file for Borderlands did not have any effect. I actually had to force it on in the driver control panel. I did not change the global settings, I added a application specific profile for Borderlands. Regardless of the setting of VSYNC in the .ini file, the popping still existed until I actually forced it in the driver.

Like I said, I'll play some more and post the results.

Update 1: (NVIDIA driver) Setting VSYNC to ON through the Global settings also works (rather than creating an application specific profile). Changing the settings for AA in either the application profile or the global settings did modify AA within the game.

Update 2: The same popping occurs on an AMD HD 6950. Creating a profile for the game and Setting "Wait for vertical refresh" to "Always on" has no affect. AA changes in the ATI driver had no affect. Changing VSYNC=True in the WillowEngine.ini file. did turn on VSYNC and the popping stopped. Deleting the application profile had no effect on VSYNC; It was still on as tweaked by the .ini file. It seems with the AMD card you must edit the .INI file for Borderlands to change the VSYNC. This behavior is opposite of the NVidia driver behavior where the .ini file had no effect but changing the driver did.

Update 3: The same issue occurs on a GTX 660 Ti. The same fix works for the Nvidia driver as posted above for the GTX 560 Ti (set the global option for VSYNC to on or make an application specific profile).

I'm sorry to hear that. My problem with vsync is the input lag i cant play games with it. I play a lot of MP games, where the lag makes my KD ratio goes from 30-5 to 5-30

This is really the reason I'm slowly getting worn out on PC gaming. I spent over a 1000 dollars on this PC, and I get these dumb problems. My 200 dollar xbox got non of these. IT JUST WORKS. Go figure right...

Yeah, 30 fps on a console never used to lag as much as 30 fps on my rig when I used to game on my PS3. Does anybody think its a hardware issue because I have tried everything software related, Disabling Vsync, D3DOverrider, Adaptive Vsync, Maximum pre rendered frames, Re-installing Windows and drivers!, nothing seems to fix this.... The only thing I have yet to try is a high DPI mouse because the one I have now is a crappy logitech office mouse and not a gaming mouse but I hardly think that will make a difference because it is not input lag I am seeing but actual lag whenever i dip below 60.

I tired 2 different mice, mx518 which i had for like 7 years now so thought that might of been it, and a naga i keep in the closet. IDK what to do. LOL so i just been playing black ops on my xbox instead of on my PC like I want. This sucks...

Want to get a new mobo and stuff bud I'm having a hard time ordering it. Looking at the MSI Mpower. But after all this IDK...LOL.

I would like to know if this is a recent finding that you seem to notice this lag or has this been right from the start when you built your gaming rig?... Have you tried changing motherboards on both your rigs before?...

no I never messed with my old computer. seemed fine till now. I'm not sure if i just noticed it or not. I think it just started. I lock bf3 at 50 fps, and it use to be butter smooth.......well now its terrible. I can't even play bf, my damn favorite game. I put over 450 hours in to that game on 50 fps. I would think I would of noticed it before, but then again who knows????????

Well I guess you should, especially when you have spent nearly 20 days playing it :D..... Anyway, the chances of you not noticing the lag is less when you say its unplayable now but I and not so sure as to why you notice it all of a sudden. I have had this problem from the start, the moment started playing on my brand new rig. I actually noticed yesterday that my graphics card wont work if I screw it tightly to the case with the PCI-E connector in the slot properly, it needs some slack to correctly post otherwise the power LED`s on my TOP does not light up. I have had this problem with my graphics card not sitting in the slot properly because of its weight and this has been there right from the time I got my 680, the warning light on the mobo would blink every one second to let me know that one of my PCI-E lanes is malfunctioning, but I always thought that the weight is making the card to not make full contact with the PCI-E lane on the mobo. Interestingly I found out yesterday that this was apparently not the issue but rather the PCI-E lane on the mobo was not working properly. I found this by plugging a PCI-E 1x Wi-Fi card I have in the 16x slot I used to use for my card and guess what!, the slot was still malfunctioning. No way that Wi-Fi card was bogging down the lane because of its weight!....

I never used to use both the PCI-E lanes right from the start till the time I got my card. So I am starting to think now that the lanes migh have been damaged right from the start and I never realized that because I never used it till I got my card.

I dunno if this story will be of any use to you but apparently my mobo was an issue in the first pace and I did not notice it. I used to use my card with some slack in it thinking that I should have bought a lighter card than this. Hope you get something from this!!....

I could kiss you right now!!!!!
Having stutter problems for ages in every game and it was the freaking pci lane wasn't seated right!!!!!!

YESSSSS!!!!! VICTORY IS MINE!!!!!! I HAVE MAH VIDYA GAEMZ AGAIN!

You`re welcome :D..... Happy to see your problem is solved.... Now can ya gift me a free motherboard upgrade? :D.... jus kiddin... I still have to wait a month to get paid and then I am planning to get a Gigabyte Z77X-UD4H and scrap this crap H77 although I will RMA this for the damn PCI-E lane so that I can sell it later :D.....

Lol, only have X58 boards lying around.... -__- not so useful

If my onboard video does stutters even worse at the same frame rate could it be my CPU then?

Could be but I thought you said you had the same stutter on an AMD platform as well? There is no way you will get the same lag on two entirely different machines unless its an unfortunate coincidence so buckle up and do the tests once again on your two rigs from the start to make sure you are right in thinking both rigs have the same issue. If that is really the case, I am afraid you have to build an entirely new rig with hardware that is not common in both your rigs you have now....

We may be overlooking something here... something... simple. Have you tried the PC with a different wall outlet on a different circuit? Are you using a UPS? Cheap power bar?

Edit: I see you did that already, page 4. If it were me, I'd take the whole she-bang out of the tower, and test it outside the tower.
