Going in for the [H]orde

I did look through the threads a bit before posting this, but in the end I have a few questions and putting them all in one place might make things a good bit easier.

Don't know what typical power from a single user is, but I should be able to bring around ~15-17Ghz over the next few days to the [H]orde, more if I can convince a friend of mine to let me borg the machines in his house, which shouldn't be too difficult and would give me an Athlon XP 2300+, an 800Mhz Via C3, 5-6 older Pentium II's and III's from 300Mhz to 1Ghz, a 2Ghz Turion64 X2 laptop... all in all a nice boost.

I've got a E6420@3.2Ghz in my sig rig that should be running 24/7 or thereabout and might lose 6-7 hours a day to actual use, and I may be ordering the better part of a nice watercooling setup from FS/FT here in a few days, so it could end up OC'd a good bit higher. Also have a 3Ghz Pentium 4 HT that sits idle 9/10ths of the time and also runs 24/7, a 2.6Ghz P4 HT I may play around with OCing if possible that will be folding only, 24/7, a 1.7Ghz Pentium M laptop that doesn't do much but browse the web and download the occasional file that will be folding, and a 500Mhz iMac G3 and Xbox that will be folding 24/7 as well. That's ~14.7Ghz there, then I have a few older Pentium 3 machines I may be able to get running Linux and the SMP client at some point ranging from 600Mhz to 1Ghz. Have a couple older PowerMacs as well, not sure if it would be worth including them... doubt I could even get OS X running on them, really.


OK, to the real reason for the thread, not just jabbering about all the machines I hope to use...

Already signed up at hardfolding.com with the same user-name "silent-circuit" and am already folding @11.1Ghz under that name for team 33. When will I show up and/or be able to log in on hardfolding.com? Do I have to finish a work unit first? I can't find this info anywhere, so it'd probably be a good thing to add to the FAQ. The site says "as soon as possible" which is vague to say the least.

People talk about losing work units in various ways, but I'm not real clear on the "do" and "do not" things, here. Can someone explain or point me somewhere that does? Am I more likely to lose work running the SMP client on my C2D machine? Should I run 2 instances of the regular console client instead to avoid this? Will it incur a major speed penalty?

Is there a bootable folding distro of Linux out there somewhere? I'd really like to be able to just stick a CD-R in this 2.6Ghz P4 I've got and set it loose, rather than spend several hours reinstalling the OS so it can sit there and do nothing but fold until it explodes.

Setup tips? Anything odd you think I might have overlooked or not done?

Minimum speed for the SMP client is around ......
1.6 Ghz for C2D's.
2.4 Ghz for AMD's.
3.0 Ghz for P4's.
Much slow than that and you may well start missing deadlines on some of the slower protiens.

Minimum speed for the CPU client is around 500 Mhz but at that speed is it worth the electrisity to run it.

As for losing work units either ..........
Vary rarely Stanford looses one in the system.
You'll normaly get credited for it at a later date once Stanford finds it
Or ..........
You get a Early Unit End.
When either you've overclocked a little to much and the system become slightly unstable.
Or there it a slight fault in the work unit causeing it to become unstable.

For that 2.6Ghz P4 you don't want to waste the time to install Windows on, Foldix would be your answer. You do need a hard drive in the machine for it.

Read all the instructions before installing it. It will wipe out any data on the drive automatically. If you have an old, small hard drive laying around, I would toss it in there and use that. In my Foldix box, P3 600, I have a 14 gig drive as it was the smallest working drive I had at the time. I think Foldix uses maybe 200-250 meg of the drive.

It does not do SMP as it only runs the single core clients which is what you would want to run on that P4 anyway. Just remember to use the instructions to change your user name. It defaults to unhappy_mage's of course. I was nice enough to give him my first WU from Foldix for all the work he put into creating it for us, though.

With the instructions it's rather easy to setup but if you have any trouble, just send the question our way.

I believe when I signed up last month it took a completed work unit before I showed up in the system - both Stanford's and www.hardfolding.com.

To answer your question first, yes, you must have at least one work unit submitted to show up anywhere. Double check, if you have sent in a completed unit that the client is configured with your name and not just team number, you need both for any and all clients you install.

Second, welcome aboard, one machine is as important is 500 in this team cause that’s what makes a team. It is what makes the [H] the best of the teams.

Double check the configuration of your client by using the –configonly flag using one space after the .exe file. If your machines are Orthos or Prime95 stable for 6 hours or more use the –forceasm flag one space after the .exe file that will help your speed.

Try to avoid the Graphic client; it never has been completely stable with some graphic cards. Use the console version; it’s faster and less bothersome overall.

I'm running the console on my sig machine because I want to use the SMP version, but graphical on the others because I don't like the console taking up a taskbar slot all the time and don't really want it running as a service, either. If it stayed in the systray like the graphical client does I'd be much happier with it. Going to be running "Foldix" on a 2.6Ghz P4 here shortly. Should complete my first work unit in the next few hours...

Now, to convince the realtor's office I'm working for that all those 3+Ghz Pentium D workstations they have sitting around doing near to nothing should be curing cancer...
