I'm getting ready to build my first system in ten years or so, needless to say I'm pretty excited. I should have most everything I need by Friday with the glaring exception of my case. I've got a Corsair 600T on order but it's probably a few weeks out. I'd like to build the system up before then. I want to make sure everything works plus I don't think I can leave the boxes un opened for a few weeks. I know when testing components people often set up on top of the motherboard box and I figured I'd do the same. Is there anything that needs to be considered when running this way? Do I need to set up extra fans?

MSI GTX460 (second GTX460 for SLI on order)

Just make sure nothing will distrub your new rig like a cat jumping on the table, or a spilled beer.

No extra fans should be needed, the ambient air should take care of it.

Take care not put place any of the components on other metal surfaces because you could end up shorting something out.

Out of curiosity do you have another HDD for storage because 120gb isn't a whole lot of space.

Thanks. I've got a couple of drives around but this is just a gaming rig so 120 will probably be enough.

Consider too if it really is going to be several weeks till the case shows up, find a scrap of plywood and some 1/2 inch tall plastic standoffs/spacers and use wood screws to screw the board down. Any extra room and you can drill some holes and use tye wraps to hold down the power supply, HD etc, just to keep stuff from flopping around. Find a junked case somewhere and rob the power switch and LEDs .

I always run a setup a couple of days out of the case before installing.

Nice idea, I'll give it a shot. There's a power switch and a reset switch on the mobo so I don't even need to hack one from a case.

Yea, the EVGA on-board power and reset switches come in handy for that purpose. One of the things you miss when working with other brands.
