This new 6 beta 2 linux SMP client sucks ass. I never had any problems with the older client. I can't get this new one to do anything but generate client-core errors and waste cpu cycles.

Anyone had any luck running Ubuntu 7.10 in VMware with the new beta client?

 
Sorry, I only run CentOS on my Linux Boxen/VM's.
I'm rock stable.

Same here, Suse64 has been pretty stable for me, but on the other hand.
I had nothing but trouble with windows smp client on a q6600 at stock speeds.
Tried for about 3 weeks, one work unit might go thru but the next one would crap
out with a core error 9 out 10 times. Finally starting running Linux 64 after reading thru the furums here:)
 
Yeah I really just don't know at this point. I loaded the Windows SMP client and it seems to be happy, using 100% of all four cores. That's more than I can say for the linux client. Also, it doesn't mind my overclocked q6600.
 
I;'ve been running Xubuntu 7.4 in my VMs with no problems.....make sure you're not overclocking too far, because that WILL generate errors in Folding that you don't see in normal use.

edit: the thing about the linux client is that it's pure 64 bit code, so it has the possibility of using higher precision math, which will show errors in precision easier than the windows client when overclocking
 
I run Ubuntu with the Linux SMP client 6.0 beta 2 and I have zero problems. I'm sure there is something causing havoc like incorrect permissions or something else.

Did you try using finstall to install the client ?

Or you can try running NotFreds install.
Just point the VM at the iso and it will install and run from that.

If that don't work then its [H]ardware, not {S}oftware that the problem.
Remember the SMP client will stress the CPU more than another software.

Schenksmill could be right. I also think it might be hardware related such as your OC as I mentioned in this post. Alternatively, Xilikon's suggestion of a configuration problem warrants double checking the OS/client setup before you attempt anything else. Hope you resolve the issue soon.

I've been running the Linux SMP betas pretty much since they came out. It's one of the reasons I run Linux full time now. I think I've actually had fewer problems with the last 2 Linux beta SMP clients compared to the original. The current Linux SMP beta I'm sure is the same as the previous one but with a different expiration date. I highly doubt there have been many if any changes between them.

Something I have noticed with Linux, an over clock that windows may tolerate just fine Linux won’t.

As a rule I’ll do a quickie win install and stabilize the machine, back it down a hair and that seems to work.

I just installed a double install of the new Suse. Just download the one CD and allow VM to install from the .iso. During the install it changes from a disk install to a network install between Novel and your machine and goes very quickly. Do the updates at the end of the install as well.

So far, as expected, rock solid and nice to work with.;)

Go Here and add your User name and team before down-loading the iso.
Put a copy in each virtual machine you want to run.
Before you start the VM point the CD drive at the iso.
Start and it will run.

I've not run it much in a VM so I dont know if it saves checkpoints, etc running like this but its very quick to set up.

I have to say, BillR was correct on this, in reguards on my setup.

My Q6600 was OC to 3.0Ghz ... windows xp was fine .... but the linux diskless client was having problems. Every 5-7 WU would end early with a "Not real number error"

Had to bump the voltage just a little .. F@H is harder then any stress test out there.

Just realize that once a system is F@H stable ... it is rock solid ....
