I am trying to decide what is the best component(s) to upgrade when I get my 1440p monitor.

Option 1: Upgrade from Q6600 at 3.0 Ghz, to a 4670k and keep 5870

Option 2: Upgrade 5870 to 7950 or new ATI card when released and keep Q6600.

Any help would be great.

What game are you playing?
What PSU do you have?

Wait for Hawaii to be released before you buy a new card.

Both? You can do a system overhaul and buy a mid grade card. You can grab a used 7950 for cheap or even a new one pretty cheap right now, and that would work out better than upgrading just one or the other.

With 1440p, you need at least 2 7950 to play latest demanding titles with the settings at high-very high. Upgrade to 4670k and keep the 5870 for a while until you can afford a GTX 780 or wait for the Hawaii. IMO, the 4670k will be good for around 2-3 years more. The Q6600 & PCI-E 1.1 will bottle neck the 7950.

The problem is that your current Q6600 CPU is going to gimp that HD 7950 when it comes games like BF3 and more than likely BF4. However, the HD 5870 isn't enough horsepower to drive that monitor either for BF3 or BF4.

Your best bet is to just upgrade both the CPU and GPU. But if you can only do one, do the CPU upgrade.

Ok thanks, switching my plan a bit.

Buying 4670k with MSI g45 z87 motherboard and 8GB RAM.

Monitor change from 1440p to Del 2412m, A little less res.

You're still looking at a future GPU upgrade though. My HD 6870 is roughly equal to your HD 5870 and it struggles sometimes with BF3 at 1600x900 at medium to high settings.

cpu upgrade is probably your best bet and then just play with lower settings until you get a better card down the road. It wouldn't make since to buy the new card now and not be able to reap it's true performance.
