Go with Conroe?

Hey Guys, I am planning to build my first computer. It will mainly serve as a gaming computer, as well a school tool. The OS will be Windows XP Pro. Here are my core components, second revision:

ASUS P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP Socket T (LGA 775)
E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor
SAPPHIRE Radeon X1900XT 100149 Video Card
Segate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA (x2)
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
NEC DVD+R 3550A
Samsung 204B
NeoPower 550W
Antec P-180B Case
Logitech MX1000
Logitech G15

Do you think that all these pieces will function well together? Here is a list of the games that I would like to play on it: Rise of Nations, Rise of Legends, Civilization 4, Command and Conquer: The First Decade, Command and Conquer 3 (when it comes out), and Star Wars: Empire at War. My price window is $2100 - 2400. Thanks for the help.

Wow. That system is perfect. I would add a raptor if I can spare the cash though.

That system seems pretty sweet. I just bought a Gigabyte DS3 and a e6300 and overclocked to 2.98Ghz right off the bat. Easiest overclock ever. What are you going to be using for sound? You didn't mention it or anything like that.

that looks good, ive got almost the same setup except i got the p5b vanilla, and i was able to overclock it to 3ghz for now and it runs games rock solid. you will b happy with ur purchase, goodluck with it.

Far from perfect...If building a gaming computer I don't understand not buying a 7950 GX2

Just make sure that you have updated the BIOS on the P5B Deluxe. The P5B is not as picky on memory as the Deluxe board is.

because the card he is using right now is still good for all games that are currently out.

Yeah, no need to go with a 7950gx2, that card is way overkill for most people. I would recommend adding a real sound card as opposed to onboard sound, a Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music can be had for around $100 or less, so go for that.

Your monitor is nice enough, but if you have that much to spend on a system I would recommend going for a 24" widescreen model like the Dell 2405fpw (if you can still find one, the 2407fpw apparently sucks).

Fantastic set of components there. I would probably shy away from Antec for the power supply for that system due to some horror stories I've heard recently... I'd probably go with a PC Power and Cooling unit but other than that, you've done a great job of picking components. Let us know how it works out for you.

Antec makes a good quality PSU.

Antec as of late has been choosing bad caps for use in their SmartPower and NeoPower units. If anyone has owned a Sonata-II case, you'll know what I mean. Return rates on the NeoPowers' are up there as well.

Antec "USE" to make a good power supply. Since they went with Fuhjyyu caps, it is best to avoid them.

Not at that monitors native resolution 16x12, only a GX2 or SLI/Crossfire setup will maintain framerates above 30 FPS at that resolution with AA/AF and maybe HDR in games like Oblivion, Titan Quest, Ghost Recon and most certainly future games.. I just want him to be satisfied dropping that much paper.

looks like a solid choice to me. same board/CPU combo I got. And the onboard sound isn't terrible on here, but yah, a new soundcard will probably be the next thing I get for mine

Are the NEO HE series using different caps than the True Power and the other Antec series?

Looks nice. That build looks CLOSE as **** to the system that I am looking into getting. Check out what I have picked out here.

I'm pretty fixed on my configuration, but like everyone else asking for the options of others.

No, the NEO HE series were being made with OST caps the last time I checked. OST is not much better than Fuhjyyu by any means.

If you want good caps, get JAPANESE! :D Nothing beats a Rubycon capacitor.

I highly recommend the OCZ GXS 600W. I just got one and it kicks ass in power efficiency. ;)

No one seems to have much of a clue when it comes to the NeoHE 550...the OLDER ones were the bad ones. The new ones are perfectly fine and are great power supplies. Read the reviews people..

NeoHE 550 FTW!

Also, if you look here, they have placed Antec in Tier2...Specifically the NeoHE

Official XS Tiered PSU Manufacturer Brand Listing Phase III

Basically, Tier2 offers just as much power and stability as Tier1, but at a lower price.

So, you should feel confident with your NeoHE 550...don't worry about it.

You can keep your Antec, my box of dead ones at work makes me stay away. It's opinion vs personal experience. That review is pathetic (like most of the stuff on that site) and doesnt say two-shats about its quality. The new HE's still use OST caps, and they are on the suspect list at Badcaps.net .

Thanks for the info on the Neo HE 550W. With the recent news that the ATI R600 will need 250W alone, I wonder if 550W will even be enough? Maybe Antec will release a Neo HE 600W by the end of the year?

I still recommend the OCZ GXS. For one, they are FSP/Fortron units, which happens to be one of the top PSU manufacturers. 2: They have an 80-89% efficiency rating.

Badcaps.net...?!?? Ok...Well I'll trust anything JonnyGuru says over badcaps.net and from what I've seen from his posts at XS, he also believes the NeoHE 550 is a Tier2.

I've never used any of the older Antec PSUs, but both of my systems at home are using the NeoHE 550...one of them an overvolted, overclocked, conroe, x1900 crossfire system and it runs it flawlessly...Like you said, personal experience.
