Despite having played a Wii only once or twice a long time ago, my girlfriend mentioned that she wants a Wii. She said that people she knows talk about it all the time. She said she wants to get more into the fitness side of it, specifically the yoga stuff. She's back in school, and has to get a part time job soon. I don't see her having much time to play.

The latest console in my possession is a PSX. I played Mario Kart for the Wii last December at a holiday gathering. That's the extent of my experience with the Wii.

Advice? Are there official Nintendo yoga accessories, or which ones are recommended?

Convince her that she needs to play an XBOX360. If you do not have any of the current gen consoles this is your best bet. Many people on this board probably have not played their Wiis for months. I know all I do with mine is HomeBrew. It is the best console for HomeBrew applications.

Ok... the wii is a great console when you have the right game.

For your girl , wii fit seems to be what she want. Thats mostly the game for yoga stuff.

Also get wii sports resorts with the motion plus adapter for yourself , i hear MANY good thing about it.

Also... check out madworld for you... fun bloody game.

All I could think of is Wii fit and the several exercise games they have available would be your best bet, I'm sure several have Yoga type workouts included.

So I'm looking at:

Wii bundle - $250
Wii Fit - $85
Wii Sports Resort - $47

Is the yoga stuff included with the Wii Fit bundle good enough? Should she get a Wii yoga mat for it?

Extra controllers?

Wow man you're about to drop a whole lot of money to play 1-3 games....... Are you buying it retail? Because you need to factor in tax.......

I'd say wait for a internet deal, I got my Wii from Dell for $200.

IMO Natal would be 100% better for fitness/yoga then a Wii balance board. Show her some videos of Natal and the possibilities it brings instead of a balance board.

Did you read my post at all?

Yes I did and to be honest it is stupid to buy any video game system if the only intention you have of playing it is once every so often. I would not buy it at retail that is for sure and I would not buy a video game system if you have the intention of only playing Wii Fit. Hell a gym membership may be more cost effective and give you faster results.

You mentioned that you had bought a PSX so obviously you are buying a Wii with the intention of gaming on it a bit or at least that is the picture I am painting. If that is the case and you plan to game a bit like I said you would be better off getting a XBOX.

Finally my point of no one playing the Wii was to underline that you could probably find someone on this forum selling theirs.

If she wants Yoga, it's probably better to get a yoga matt and start taking lessons. The Wii will gather dust after a few months.

I told her the novelty would probably wear off after awhile. I'm not even convinced it's any better than getting a yoga DVD.

I have used my wii fitness some. It's not bad, but there is definately a lack of exercises in it and they get old and boring after awhile. I haven't tried EA Active, but I have heard good things. Before she gets one tell her that there are only like 16 yoga poses to try. i think there is a whole game dedicated to yoga but I haven't looked at it and I may be mistaken. but it may be worth it to google for it.

I expect the same stuff thats currently out for the wii to make it's way over to the XBOX once NATAL is out (I have no idea when it will be though I don't think it has been given a release date). But judging that there are exercises in wii fit that just trust your doing it right without the board, the exercises are going to be the same.

If she is dead-set on getting one then by all means. but I think some exercise videos would be better for the yoga especially. Or yoga classes if she has the time but judging by your post she probably doesn't.

It is amazing how anti-wii this place is. GOD FORBID someone wanting a wii!!!

She isn't adamant yet. More mulling it around. I'm gonna do what I can to make sure she's as informed as possible.

Hell, my GF plays the Wii almost every day. We've had it since launch. She *loves* the thing.

The Wii's a Blast, my Wife really like Wii Fit (It has a Yoga Segment) and also likes much of the Wii Ware games i.e. Bust Out etc.. The whole Family loves to play mario Kart a ton (Drinking or not great party game with Friends), also games like Tiger Woods Golf etc.. are great on the Wii. I have an XBox 360, a Wii and a half decent PC, the Wii get's the most gameplay overall :)

Wii fit and the ea sports active both have this kind of feature, although it's not very comprehensive. If she wants balance board stuff though you'll need the wii fit balance board bundle, and consider buying the ea sports active game.

The wii fit is fun. It's a "lite" gaming console, thus the games are simple, but so damn addicitng.

Bad timing to buy a Wii I would say. The stupid thing has to be close to a price drop say around November. But at the same time they are going to create a shortage of wii's to falsely inflate the perceived value of the system so it might be hard to find in November.

don't buy the console with plans of getting in shape with it because wii fit and all the other fitness games work for a very small portion of people who buy them. The wii is a gaming console not a bowflex. Seriously its not fun to use the wii for exercise, and the exercise you do get is so half ass that you need to use it 3 times as long.

With the above stated for me the wii is the best console to buy. My PC takes care of next gen (xbox360 and PS3 are hardly next Gen) and my wii takes care of fun with the wife.

I added some stuff, bolded some others. I think this is what this guy should have said, if he read the OP.

I think you missed where he said his girlfriend wants a Wii. Im sure she is buy-sexual like the rest of them so he isnt buying it to play games, atleast not electonic ones. :D

Heh. She'd probably play more than 1-3 games. I'd probably pick up a Wiimote and play some of the sports games. I don't think I'd buy any Wii games just for me to play though.

I have also seen a "Wii Fitness Coach" game out there but have not played/tried it. I have an Xbox360 and Wii (launch console) and my wife actually plays the Wii quite a bit. She plays everything from the OG Mario Bros. to using the Wii Fit. If she is truly interested in one there is a 15% off coupon going on at Dell.com thru techbargains.com that will get you one for a decent price. But hurry it ends on the 31st I believe.

My wife and I got a Wii in December 2007. I'd say by June 2008 we'd quit playing it entirely. In March, after it sat untouched for nearly 9 months, we sold it. The novelty definitely wears off for some people.

I think I still like the Wii the best, even though I play the 360 a lot, lot more. It's a good system for gatherings and such and for oldschool gaming.

The Wii Fit doesn't have a ton of exercises but I have yet to have a day where I go though them all, so for me it it enough variety to play for a few hours per week without getting bored. The balance board really does help with some exercises since you can tell your stability and weight distribution more easily.

Don't you have to buy the Balance Board to be able to do Yoga? So it's going to be $250 for the console... and what, another $100 for the board plus $50 minimum per game. I would pay for some yoga classes for her, bro.

My fitness regimen consists entirely of playing Street Fighter 4 and eating hot dogs. It is working! I've gained 10 pounds in the past week!

if you want to please both sides, get a wii, its almost like how board games are, you break out the game and everyone's involved, sometimes emotions can get a little outa hand (that's to you uncle Loyd!, i won that game damnit!), Ahem... it is truly a good thing to have around for the sake of casual gaming.
im single, so i barely play mine, but when my family comes to visit, it always good fun

edit: hope i was on topic, i kinda just skimmed through.

Personally, I think the Wii fitness games/accessories are fantastic. My wife has been using the Wii Fit, and EA Active for awhile now, and really loves them. The Wii gets a good hour of use a day with those alone.

If you decide to purchase one though, try checking out the FS/FT forum..there are some simply smokin deals on them there. I wouldn't buy new with so many good deals out there.

I actually got a Wii this last Christmas. I will say I play it as much as I do the 360 or PS3. I enjoy Mario Kart and Super Mario Galaxy though, as well as the on rails shooters.

My SO got Wii Fit and EA active and doesn't use them very much, though EA active held her interest a lot more. She used to take Yoga classes and she thought the Yoga in Wii Fit was a waste.

We also end up playing the Wii more together. She has a few RPGs on the PS3 and I mostly hop from system to system. If we want to play together though we always seem to end up on the Wii.

despite having already been flamed at your gf, pics or shens on gf :p

AND! wii is a good console until you play it for a week, i mean, i guess is she wants it, get some mario kart, wii fit (although shell never use it, shell thank you for getting it) and all the wii sports and wii play stuff..

I'm leaning towards talking her out of it, although she hasn't really mentioned it for about a week. I know the novelty will die off, and she doesn't have any time. She's a full-time student, and she has to get a part-time job soon. After a few more quarters, she'll be in a Master's program.

It takes about 3 hours/week to get fit with a gym (3 days a week 1 hour each). If she really wanted to get fit, this would be the fastest way.

I would agree. The Wii doesn't have any staying power, imo. Thankfully I got mine from my sister who didn't use it. Now we don't use it.

SeaFoam,

While a Wii Fit is hardly a replacement for a well regimented fitness routine..what do you have against something that helps people be more active? The wii fit board itself is simply an interactive step board, which is a device used in plenty of aerobic programs. If someone doesn't have the time to go to a gym/program, it's better or as good as taped workout in my opinion.

Have you actually used a Wii workout program? I would hate to think you've come in this thread simply to berate something you have no experience with, based solely on a funny youtube video that somehow "makes your case".

The general consensus is that if it's used, the Wii fit games do provide a light aerobic workout that is beneficial to overall health. If you're really into fitness, why would you be so adamantly against a product that has positive physical benefits?

If it gets someone who isn't currently exercising at all, to start doing it, I'm all for it. Maybe it will be a good stepping stone to get them into a real program.
