Since there has been a lot of talk about solid-state recently, I thought that I would convey my experiences.

I have been wanting to build a computer with a SS drive for the longest time- having finally done so, it feels great.

Here's my disclaimers: I am not an OCer, my equipment is considered budget, even to myself, and take this with a grain of salt. I did not have a nice stopwatch to time this.

I just recently purchased an HP sr1710nx on the March Madness $200 sale.

Tossed in an Aspire 500wt SLI Ready ATX2.0 24-pin Power Supply (thanks six_storm).
Bought what I thought to be a v1.1 i-Ram from eWiz, but turned out to be a v1.3 (nice surprise).
Filled with Crucial PC3200 1GB sticks for a total of 4GB (had on hand- see my memory whore post)
Added an eVga 7800 GT CO.
and 2 x 512MB Crucial PC3200 Value Ram and 2 x 512MB Kingston PC3200 Value Ram
Everything else is stock- even the crappy Sempron (I told you it was budget didn't I?).

I had to install TinyXP (for those who dont know what this is- google it up) with my license since a default XP install stripped down was still running in the 2GB neighborhood. What I wanted to do was to have XP and BF2 on the ram drive and later install the drive that came with the PC for other apps and files.

BTW, I never noticed it before, but BF2 requires 2Gb of space to patch! =( I had to play around with some ghost tricks to get this to work. Installed TinyXP, drivers, and BF2 to the i-Ram, ghost the drive to the included 100GB SATA, patch, and ghost back. For those who has ghost and have problems with it and SATA drives, make sure you use the -noide flag.

Anyhow, hours later, I had an install that would launch XP in approximately 8 seconds. Remember the XP is loading bar? I would normally launch XP within about 10 rounds/rotations of that bar- my system now launches within 2.5 rounds!

As for BF2, I had set everything at high @ 1280 x 1024 @ 75Hz. The i-Ram didn't show any speed increases in the initial game load, but boy was it fast on a level load. I was averaging 15 second loads on maps. Now something I noticed which was kind of strange is that if I loaded a new map I havent played yet on this new build, it would take 20-25 secs to start, otherwise it would be consistent in the 15 seconds time.

Fast! And yes, I have it on a low res due to my crappy 17" LCD.

The best part is on maps that the server did not add a wait period for commander selection, I was in well before anyone else. I'm not too familiar with map names, but the one where the Chinese and US forces face off in a marshland- I was into that game so quick, that I took a helicopter and took the US spawn point before anyone else spawned. Then of course the rest of my teamates captured the other 2 points (set on small map) and the game ended in less than 1 minute!

I think that was the best part of last night! :D

Sorry about the non-scientificness of the tests, but if anyone want me to run some sort of test, LMK.

BTW, I still have 1.01GB left on the i-RAM!

Nice mini review. I'd love to get one of these and play with it.
Damn Uncle Sam is gulching me for $7000 more in taxes than I've already paid in from quarterly payments so money's gonna be tight for awhile. I guess I'll just have to dream about it for awhile more. :(

You'd think E-wiz would update their website.

If i could gather a bunch of ram together, this would probably be awesome for me. but I really don't play many games... I just do web stuff and run a few office programs occasionally.

Has anyone tried this type of memory with the I-Ram?

OK, google TinyXP, but didn't find any details. How is it working for you?

Its working great- basically its XP with everything extra stripped out- legacy drivers, assecories, etc. You can even strip it down further for a samller install, but I'm lazy and dont want to deal with that. Even so, a default install with TinyXP took up only 512MB of space.

Here's the info on the install:

Thank you for installing this stripped out (170Mb)
edition of XP. The WINDOWS folder for this "TinyXP"
takes up only 420Mb space on your systems hard drive
and Windows TinyXP runs on just 60Mb of RAM. Windows
XP usually uses much more RAM than this.

This version of TinyXP fixes the DHCP issues from the last
version and also Rev02 includes an additional 17 programs
over the last version.

All Included Hotfixes Were Updated On 26th December 2005

99% of the functionality is left remaining in Windows.

All important hardware drivers and other essentials
have been kept in this release - You have joystick
support, printer support and other bare essentials.
"Microsoft SideWinder" support has been left in.

You can use Microsoft Office with this Tiny edition
of Windows XP, because the Jet Database Engine is kept.

You still have MS Paint, Calculator and Wordpad.

You still have XP's games: FreeCell, Hearts,
Minesweeper Solitaire and Spider Solitaire.
Internet games that were included in XP HAVE
been removed in TinyXP.

Internet Explorer has been removed from this edition,
it is GONE! Included is a tiny standalone web browser
(OffByOne or OB1) so you can at least access the internet
to download a good browser like Firefox or Opera, both these
great browsers are FREE and offer more security over Internet
Explorer. The "core" of Internet Explorer HAS been left in
this edition.

The core player "Windows Media Player 6.4" is also kept,
this should play most video files. If you want a really good
and free media player, use "VideoLAN" player, this is not
included in TinyXP because it takes about 20Mb of space but
that is because it plays everything, even DVD's! Just visit...

http://mirrors.ircam.fr/pub/videolan/vlc/0.8.4a/win32/vlc-0.8.4a-win32.exe

Included with TinyXP is a standalone BitTorrent client, uTorrent. This
amazing BT client is only 130Kb and is packed with functionality.

GONE also are all Windows noises like startup and
shutdown noises, but audio does work. Remember, you
can use Microsoft Office and you DO have support if
you want to install a printer - also included is...

DHCP - Kept! Now your "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol"
will resolve all dynamic IP's properly (automatically)

ETHERNET LAN DRIVERS - Kept! Now if you have
a LAN card you won't have problems!

FRONTPAGE EXTENSIONS - Kept! Now you can author websites with Frontpage!

JET DATABASE - Kept! Now you can use your beloved Microsoft Office

LAPTOP SUPPORT - Battery Support is kept, laptops are now supported!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

This XP has been thoroughly tweaked to give you the
best possible eXPerience from a tiny package.

Here is what keeps this OS running FAST as hell - there
are 37 "installed" programs with TinyXP, but these programs
are only COPIED to your hard disk. All programs are STANDALONE
programs, except for WinRAR. So, the point to this is, the Windows
registry stays small, because nothing has installed into the
registry or into Windows - only if you run the program, then it
might put whatever keys into the registry it needs to, but the
size of the registry is just 2.2Mb to begin with!

If you do not want ANY of the installed programs at all,
they can all be directly deleted from "Program Files" apart
from WinRAR, that one program would have to be uninstalled
in "Add Remove Programs". Then delete each folder from the
start menu that related to the programs you just deleted.
Be careful not to delete any folders Windows might have put
in "Program Files". Only delete what is included in the list
of programs above, just not WinRAR, because it was actually
installed and not just copied to Program Files.

And if you use this obviously, you cant use windows update. But just use some of the other windows updaters out there (not M$) and yopull be fine.

I have 2 i-rams , a 1.1 and a 1.3 revision. Both of them have 4G.

My motherboard Asus A8V allows me to raid them into an 8G raid 0 drive.

The only app I currently have on it is City of Heroes/City of Villians.

Although this particular game takes up less than 4G, like BF it requires an additional 2G for patching.

When running this game, load times to different zones is dramatically shorter. Overall response in the game is smoother (less jerky).

The memory I used were 4 sticks of OCZ value ddr400 ram, and 4 sticks of MWave generic ddr400 ram.

I loled.

Sounds like you're doing great bro, but be careful with that Aspire, especially with the solid state. :)

Been solid so far, maybe I got the good one out of the batch... :D

If it fails, I'll get a better PSU, I was just trying to save cash this time around.

GigaByte i-Ram 1.3 -> googled

Got a review.

Games -> 3 seconds faster than a HDD on Doom3 loading,
16 sec. vs. 19 sec.

Is 3 seconds worth the investment? :p
