So I have a Q9550 + DS3R combo going on. I have an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro attached. I got it up and running last thursday, and today, I came home to my computer making these funny sounds. Every few minutes or so, the cpu fan gets real loud for 10 seconds or so, then goes back to normal.

My friend who owns a DS3L + E8400 + AC 7 Pro said I had to set my CPU fan to PWM. But when I went into BIOS (F10 version), I can only set it to Auto, Enabled, or Disabled. I had the F7 BIOS before and it only had Enabled and Disabled, and it was on Enabled before. Right now, it's on Auto and it's still making the same sound.

I'm not even sure this is the actual problem, but if it is, I'd love to know a fix because it's annoying as hell.

Thanks for any help you guys can give me. This is making me pull my hair out.

I don't think the DS3R has PWM fan control. At least on mine it doesn't, but mine is a P35. I had to 7v mod my CPU fan to keep it from sounding like a jet engine.

My P35-DS3L has PWM fan control, in the BIOS you must have under the PC Health Status the following settings:
CPU Smart FAN Control: Enabled
CPU Smart FAN Mode: PWM.

But now I see that for the EP45-DS3(R) boards that last setting it's missing !
You can find many optimal Gigabyte BIOS settings from this page, it's in German but it's not too hard to understand.

I think the Ctrl+F1 method it's not implemented on newer Gigabyte motherboards, so I'm out of ideas.

Anyway, when the fan gets loud, what's your CPU temperature ?

with the Ga-ep45-ds3r you actually dont have to hit ctrl-f1 anymore, i can double check my bios and look for pwm fan control but i am 90% it does not have it

Yeah, I didn't think the DS3R's had PWM fan control.

Solution: Buy a cheap fan controler or 7v mod the CPU fan.

I doesn't happen all the time. Did yours sound like a jet engine all of the time? Or just sometimes?

That board most certainly does have pwm fan control for the cpu fan.

Set CPU fan to Auto
Enable EIST

It is normal to hear the fan change speed thats the fan speed control working, it speeds up when needed. If you need more information that little book you tossed in a drawer and did not bother to read will help.

I read the manual. It just speeds up randomly, even when my comp is idling. That's what's so frustrating about it.

It might do it's thing on "Auto", but I have found no way of controlling the fan speed externally via software. So, going into something like SpeedFan does not allow the changing of the speed on-the-fly. The "Auto" setting I've found to make my idle temps stay slightly on the high side, while at load it cranks up to a vicious roar that's more annoying than anything.

Unless there is something I'm missing here. Regardless, I have a 3pin fan on my CPU anyways. I still don't get why I can't control the fan speed via software when it's plugged into the motherboard though. I used the same HSF combo on an MSI S939 mobo that allowed me to control the fan via Speedfan, yet on this Gigabyte board I cannot. Is that not an option on today's motherboards?

That noise stopped for almost all of last night, but then it was doing it again in the morning, but has stopped since 4pm (at 4, I openned my case and did the 7v mod to all the casefans). I don't know what's going on, but since it's not making those sounds, I'm going to leave it as is.

I have an EP45-DS3R and my Arctic Cooler 7's fan adjusts to the temperature. When the CPU gets hot, the fan speeds up. When it cools down, the fan slows down. If the motherboard has a 4-pin CPU fan connection, then it has PWM.

It hasn't done it all day except around 7am, so I don't know what the hell is going on.

Just set it to 100% all the time in BIOS and then use a fan controller to adjust the speed down manually. Zalman Fanmate comes to mind (it's $6)
